What's Spider-Man's rogues theme?
>all of Batman's villains could've stepped out of a film noir or classic horror movie
>all of Superman's villains could've stepped out of a pulp sci fi movie or dime store novel
>with two major exceptions, all of Iron Man's villains are fellow industrialist power armor users
>Captain America's villans are all political extremists embodying some un-American concept, and a lot of them are "Captain America but evil"
Most receive their powers through scientific experiments or accidents and they use their powers irresponsibly.
He's got crime bosses that use their wealth and influence (things Peter doesn't have) irresponsiby. Kingpin, Tombstone, Hammerhead
Animal inspired villains. Doc Ock, Rhino, Scorpion, Vulture
Forces of nature. Electro, Sandman, Hydroman, Shocker
My personal favorite, Halloween themed. Green Goblin, Hobgoblin, Carrion, Jack O' Lantern, ARGUABLY Black Cat
The last category is the weirdest one to me. I get the first three, but why does Spider-Man have so many spooky Halloween villains?
Venom/Carnage don't seem to fit any of these and they're easily top five in popularity.
I'd... argue they fit into Halloween. Symbiotes really are the perfect horror creature, and the psychological stalker shit Venom does to Peter fits that. God they play with a lot of different horror tropes with Venom. That's why he's so gay as a hero.
And if they don't count as Halloween, uh, they're their own weird Alien thing that's just kind of iconic now and got replicated a shit ton.
I think the Symbiote villains stoll have incredible power that they tend to use irresponsibly, though. Carnage does so to a ridiculous degree, whereas Venom is more about balancing responsibility and the temptation of the Symbiote.
They are science, as alien life forms, they also mix into the No Responsibility category
Morbius and Man-Wolf are Halloween themed. Is Will o the Wisp?
>why does Spider-Man have so many spooky Halloween villains?
Spiders are Halloween decorations.
That's dope.
I really wish we got some more Spidey content that went all in on Halloween shit. Mysterio falls under Halloween too
because he's a spooky scary spider dumbass
the only weird thing about it is that Taskmaster isn't one of his villains
>all of Batman's villains could've stepped out of a film noir or classic horror movie
Dick Tracy.
I was going to comment on your posts in the Wonder Woman thread, but I'll do it here. Your concept of the various heroes' rogues galleries is exceptionally reductive and limited, and is based entirely on post-hoc revisionism that tries to hammer characters into vague and ill-fitting themes that weren't present when the characters were created. Individual characters might have themes their creators intended, but that means characters need to be examined on an individual basis rather than as a group.
Oh, and regarding Wonder Woman? All her Marstonian rogues are emotionally maladjusted and acting in socially detrimental ways because of it. Their theme is that they all need psychological counselling to become functional members of society, as befitting Marston being a psychologist.
>Captain America's villans are all political extremists embodying some un-American concept, and a lot of them are "Captain America but evil"
This dude doesn't know the Batroc Brigade or the serpent society
>un-American concept
He's Fr*nch.
None of these rogues galleries were made with themes in mind. They were just retroactively applied to a certain set of villains that got used the most in adaptations.
This. The theme is "throw shit at the wall and see what sticks".
Mostly average joes given terrifying amounts of power?
a lot of spiderman villains are just rip offs of batman/superman characters
fisk is fat luthor, sandman is dry clayface, goblin is flying joker, black cat is bawdtier catwoman, the lizard is like killer croc mixed with two-face, etc.
>fisk is fat luthor, sandman is dry clayface, goblin is flying joker, black cat is bawdtier catwoman, the lizard is like killer croc mixed with two-face, etc.
You say this but
Luthor as a businessman didn't start until the 80's
the clay monster Clayface barely appeared until the late 80's. First Clayface was an actor in a mask, third and most prominent in the 70's/80's was a deformed man with acidic touch.
Catwoman was more of a crimeboss and less of a thief than her Post Crisis self(Granted her 66 show interpretation was before Black Cat)
Lizard predates Killer Croc and Two-face was rarely used(and didn't have a backstory of being close to Bruce)
A lot of storytelling archetypes were started with Spider-man. DC wouldn't adapt them until later.
Victims of circumstance or their own arrogance
All of Spider-man's rogues are animals that eat spiders
Rhinos are herbivores
Much like horses, they will consume flesh when the need and/or opportunity arises
Great power of varying kinds, no responsibility?
