it's alright. Sort of an unhappy medium between adaptation and crowd pleasing, for a nebulous crowd. It would've benefitted from a more confident writer and director. Considering the stuffy plot they confined themselves to, it's a great effort. Visually pleasing
In the books, Doctor Maturin is recruited into Naval intelligence, initially for his contacts in the Catalan Independence movement. He proves incredibly useful beyond that scope, using his cover as a ships surgeon and natural philosopher to move around without suspicion.
He is also heavily addicted to opium because some roasting keeps toying with his emotions
If you're casting a character like Bonden with someone completely unfit, because of how irrelevant he is to the story, maybe it's a sign to rethink said story
I thought it was good when I watched it but I don't remember a single thing about it except that it was about two friends and a boat, so pretty forgettable I guess.
the battle scenes and madagascar scene are good but other than that it's very slow and boring. guys just pretend to like it because it's le masculine historical epic. and THAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE
Jack realized that Diana probably wasn't worth getting shot by Stephen over.
The Irish Code Duello permits for the injuring party to apologize o the injured party before reaching the meeting place.

Was that before or after Stephen snuffed a israeli billionaire for moving in on Diana? Jack was right to back down.
I hate Mel Gibson, will not watch, kind of you to suggest though.
I recommend this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8ICtQqG6Fk
Not really a movie but very boat and very great.
It is indeed for such reasons I dislike him but I also don't like him as an actor nor the movies he's in.

You'd like Payback, he plays a terrible human being. Great actor of the "superstar no range" variety. He is terribly cast as Fletcher Christian though.

This sucked. Filled to the brim with 90s moralhomosexualry >mc forgives the murderer who killed two of his friends and tries to kill him >murderer gets killed by someone else as he's trying to backstab the mc
Literal disneyshit
It's one of the best dichotomy stories ever put to film. They're on a little floating world which is terribly fragile at its core and requires iron discipline at all times to keep from collapsing, and the tenets of human morality keep rising up to challenge it in seemingly benign but consequential ways. It depicts the tension between broad forces that act on men without ever firmly siding with one.
Kino. The only reason I watched it was because I was writing a novel about a bunch of e-girls and hebes who run around naked and steal a sailboat and sail to a deserted island, and I wanted to watch it to get an idea of what it's like to live on the sea. Ended up being kino. Never did finish that book.
>Napoleon keeps defeating people who declare war against him >British propagandists portray him as the aggressor
One of the greatest injustices of history.
I'm very excited for this one, nautical-bros. Hopefully it'll be a long 3 hr movie like flower moon (didn't watch that one but it's also going to be directed by Scorsese and star DiCaprio)
It's just "Britania rules the waves you modafaka" propaganda. But honestly the music and visuals are great. A good movie if you want light entertainment, for a historical kino watch Barry Lyndon instead.
I didn't get it.
Hello ma'am
I still haven't had the chance to see this. I will get to it eventually. My younger sister recommended it to me, saying it was very good.
>little sister recommends it
Alright so it's almost guaranteed shit then.
Has she written any fanfiction about Aubrey and Maturin having buttsex?
That would be in violation fo the 29th Article of War

Maturin not being a super spy drug addict was a glaring omission.
IT WAS! even though Bettany did a great job
He was too handsome l

Kino/10
Deserves sequels
The one where they go to Indonesia and the doctor murders and dissects a pair of homosexuals would be interesting.
>Deserves sequels
not ~~*today*~~ it doesn't

That's possible, I never remember the media I consume for long unless I also consume porn of it.

Why is this shit pun such a memorable line? I use it irl
The delivery was A++
It's the way the table pause, and then completely take the piss out of the most intelligent guy in the room.
It's beautiful, for a moment they 'get him' and he is both graceful enough and wise enough to see the joke and enjoy it at the same time and join in.
They are all joined in mirth.

It's certified kino and you know it.
You have never met Horatio Nelson and somehow ended up in Madagascar
Remember the time Jack had to disguise himself as a bear to sneak out of France?
Remember the time where there was supposed to be a duel? And then they just make up like that? What happened to that???
Jack realized that Diana probably wasn't worth getting shot by Stephen over.

Peak 1800s boat kino
Bland as frick. Just like the main actor and millenials who like it.
Women don't understand it so it's good
What makes it so good?
Bros (no homo)
And friendless incels on Cinemaphile supposedly know all about male camaraderie?
People enjoy and understand movies about things they've never experienced all the time.
So low t men and women should be able to understand then
Among others, yes I think so.
Watch Hornblower
Watched both, recommend more boat kino please.
Dead Calm
The African Queen
The Cruel Sea
Captain Blood
China Seas
the bounty
I hate Mel Gibson, will not watch, kind of you to suggest though.

Based, I like Mel Gibson overall but his hug box fan club here needs some checking.
Belay that, Stiles! First read the books, then watch the series. Then cry they ended so soon.
can someone who's read both hornblower and aubrey comment on their similarities and differences? I can provide fairly complete knowledge of aubrey
Aubrey could beat the shit out of Hornblower any day.

Only one woman character (who is in once scene, has no lines, and is a prostitute)

it's one of those films only women can understand
There has never been a better period sailing film, it blew all of the Mutiny on The Bounty adaptations out.
I had the privikege of seeing it in theatre when I was 15 because Return of The King was sold out.
I wish Britain was still as based as depicted in this movie
the lesser of two Weevils
it's a meme movie that was taylor-made for reddit
I'm a fan
>no ship in a bottle on the nightstand

Certified kino. A man's movie. It has everything that counts.
Kino. That is essentially what the mutiny on the bounty was.
Look up Pitcairn Island
Boats?
Peak kino but women and low testosterone men will never understand it

One of the greatest injustices of history.
Spain was his ally when he kidnapped their King and put his brother on the throne.
French got caught lacking in the 1800s psyop war. There's a war on for your mind.
In 2003 we got this and Pirates of the Caribbean
Nuff said
I'm very excited for this one, nautical-bros. Hopefully it'll be a long 3 hr movie like flower moon (didn't watch that one but it's also going to be directed by Scorsese and star DiCaprio)
I think this was my first girlfriend's (female) favorite movie. We met on Cinemaphile naturally.
10/10
Russell Crowe has always had star power even in the gladiator that features dialogue between characters riddled with inaccuracies.
It's just "Britania rules the waves you modafaka" propaganda. But honestly the music and visuals are great. A good movie if you want light entertainment, for a historical kino watch Barry Lyndon instead.
