Correct, but it was consistently meh. I did dig the cosmic horror focus, but overall didn't find any of the shorts particularly good except maybe Rory's stuff and even then kind of meh.
Better than the last two easily. More consistent than Viral. Certainly nowhere near as good as the first two. Overall it's above average. None of the stories were particularly great, but it's the best we can hope for now from this series.
they really played with my emotions there with the chick getting naked in the previous segment, and then starting this one off with the black chick in a robe for the first 5 minutes so i was hoping she was in the nip too when it came off. at least her death was satisfying because she shut up
Viral has one good segment; Parallel Monsters. And if you're into skateboarding you MIGHT enjoy Bonestorm. Other than those two you can skip everything else.
as other anon said, there's one really good segment, and the skateboarder segment is alright as it has a similar vibe to the sleepover one from VHS2, with teenagers facing off against a group of paranormal beings. but to add on to that, the wraparound in Viral is horrendous and at times incomprehensible. and if the commitment to the found footage angle is part of the reason why you enjoy VHS or found footage in general, then the first and longest segment of Viral about an evil magician will probably annoy you as they push the amount and position of cameras so much that it no longer feels like found footage anymore.
I just watched it, liked the parallel universe segment a lot, it felt good enough that it would have been a good segment in any of the other movies.
I did not like the skater one, mainly because the execution of it felt too amateurish and nonsensical, I'm all for goofy but it just fell flat for me. >it has a similar vibe to the sleepover one from VHS2
Sleepover is one of my all time favorite VHS segments, it's fricking fantastic, I love how it looks and the sound design, that loud blaring noise whenever they appear, really funny and goofy but also done really well.
>Sleepover is one of my all time favorite VHS segments, it's fricking fantastic, I love how it looks and the sound design, that loud blaring noise whenever they appear, really funny and goofy but also done really well.
Also made a good movie.

>1st segment at the lake
Fun watch. Buildup wasn't too long. Subverted expectations in a good way with what the threat would be. Honestly it could have been longer and would have been fine. >2nd segment in the TV studio
Utter shite. Embarrassingly bad. I skipped through it because it was that tedious and nonsensical >3rd segment with the black woman >Let's have a black hipster scream at the audience for 20 minutes. People like that kind of thing, right?
Shit CGI too. Boring and a laughable payoff. >4th segment
It was nice to see this story continued. Nice little clue with the water gun. Unfortunately they fumbled the whole family/cult aspect and it was film student level writing. I did like the idea that the dying while taking as many people with her was part of this woman's identity, but that she was now cursed with living eternally. Knowing the government would experiment on her eternally was a fitting end. Also the bit where they show the water pistol at the end just shows that they think their audience is moronic. >5th segment with the serial killer video tapes
Poorly-shot. Cringe characters. Nobody acts like a real person. Just kind of shit torture porn. Felt like watching August Underground's Mordum back when I was an edgy teenager. >The overarching story of Rory
Shit. Really shit. Boring with no payoff.
The clip where the zombies come and sit down with the little children was unironically more interesting than 99% of the movie. I wish someone intelligent had made a story out of that. These movies get worse with every instalment.
you're insane. the serial killer video tapes was the best shot as far as the actual video tape footage is concerned. easily the most inspired shots in the entire movie.
It's okay. Just okay. Some of the individual stories felt incomplete, whether or not written that way or cut scenes. It is rather long at 1hr 50 m but that's ok. I wasn't ever bored. The inclusion of a classic Throbbing Gristle tune playing over a snuff film was kino. However some parts were ineffective like the slam poetry one. the story about Rory the unknown organism being studied by scientists was quite good, hilarious twist (a foreshadowed twist). Yeah the Rory story is a highlight out of all the VHS movies. But the series is feeling somewhat stagnant too. I remember when VHS the first one came out, it felt really special. The series needs to evolve somehow and get back the original overarching narrative about all the tapes.
I hope they finally stop with the decade shit after the 99/94/85 trio and just go back to contemporary with hopefully more of a budget. Unfortunately I think we won't get another one of these for many years now since they barely marketed 85 (they really went all-out for 99 back when that released)
i liked it tbh. only weak part was the mexican bit. dragged on too much and then the payoff at the end was dumb. there's never been a movie where they throw on the "evil voice modulation" and have it make something scarier or more exciting, it just makes it feel like a shitty b-movie or a video game. which is an extra shame because the idea of a bunch of first responders stumbling into an ancient catacomb after an earthquake is a solid one.
even the wraparound story had something going on, which is more than i can say for the majority of vhs movie a-plots. at the end it might have shed all of its identity for the sake of turning into Life except with no budget, but at least it was interesting.
after (what ever part it was) the high voltage alien abduction trip, i wanted more. But everything after that ayy abduction on crack was slow as frick. CinemaphileH/S 85 had some nice gore scene but overall, it was even slower. And the last mini movie was boring as frick.
I want ayy abduction on crack back!
That shit was awesome.
I think most of you are whiny homosexuals with no taste that have no idea what you want from these movies and probably horror in general.
Also a whole bunch of you never got over the 'fascist filmmakers frick off' thing and are still seething and shitflinging cause of it.
watched with my buds and had a great time. great atmosphere and aesthetics, stories were all intriguing and went somewhere that delivers. good variety of styles. never checked my watch. very happy

1. No Wake/Ambrosia
2. TKNOGD
3. Total Copy
4. God of Death
5. Dreamkill
Frick Scott Derrickson. His segment breaks the found footage rules in all the worse ways without it making sense (the dream justification they provide is so fricking nonsensical). Should've axed that one from the film.
Actually, someone ought to edit the militia segment from '94 into this one as it better suits the film and nothing really makes it look like '94
have to disagree but i respect your choice, it's just that it seems like in every one of these there is one director who just needs to be different and ends up screwing over the vibe that all the other segments are going for
>94: The Subject with FPS videogame action shot on clearly 4K gear with cheap VHS filter on top and a timestamp >99: Ozzy's Dungeon with le wacky game show pow pow >85: Dreamkill with being so over the top and surreal (in a bad way) compared to the rest
what? the surreal giallo fucli worship was fricking awesome. where else are you going to experience something like that? not since PT something immersive and eerie >muh rules, muh conceit
get over yourself, FF is not that serious
>all the segments are presented in 4:3 with continuous flow of events and minimal camera cuts, just watching things unfold >Mr. Derrickson has to be different and le creative and shoots in 8mm, killer POV, with creepy music layered on top, 911 call as well, with an entire plot about two detectives investigating the killings over multiple days, with camera cuts from dreams, police cars, surveillance cams, etc. etc. full of editing and shit acting
It was probably my least favorite overall too but I think it's moronic to criticize someone for trying to be different or creative, I mean that's the whole point of these films. You gotta try and either it works or doesn't
only the zombies thing was decent. They need to stop with the summoning devil/god/entity shit because its fricking stupid. Was it a fricking aztec that the woman summoned? holy fricking boring the glitch and the dude with prosthetic eye were miles better
I had 1 above 2 in my personal rankings for years, but after having watched both movies recently (after having not watched either in a decade) I realized I was wrong and that 2 is the best in the series. I still prefer the naturalness and lo-fi ness of the first movie, but 2 is far more consistent.
Did they ever explain why the lake made those hippies immortal? Why didn't they reappear in the movie when it was heavily implied they were going to go after them for revenge?
Also the detective story was dumb as hell. Why would you leave the kid alive in a room full of loaded weapons after threatening his life?
The weakest of the last three. Watched it last night and thought it was overall pretty meh.
More consistent than the last two
consistently shit
Correct, but it was consistently meh. I did dig the cosmic horror focus, but overall didn't find any of the shorts particularly good except maybe Rory's stuff and even then kind of meh.

I like the skateboarders in viral.
The black girl doing slam poetry in the middle of the movie was embarrassing
I wish she at least got nude
they really played with my emotions there with the chick getting naked in the previous segment, and then starting this one off with the black chick in a robe for the first 5 minutes so i was hoping she was in the nip too when it came off. at least her death was satisfying because she shut up
Better than 99 and 94 but 94 had The Subject which I liked more than any segments from 85.
2 > 1 > 85 > 94 > 99
Never saw viral, should I?
Viral isn't good. Can't even remember a segment that stood out.
Viral has one good segment; Parallel Monsters. And if you're into skateboarding you MIGHT enjoy Bonestorm. Other than those two you can skip everything else.
isnt there only one other segment besides the wrap, that stupid magician one
Yep.
I just watched it, liked the parallel universe segment a lot, it felt good enough that it would have been a good segment in any of the other movies.

>Also made a good movie.
Come on now.
I liked it.
I liked the parts in the alien spaceship.
Everything else I found annoying.
> The Subject
That segment was nothing but terrible CGI, gore-action dog shit and everything wrong with the VHS movies.

Bang on review. Exactly how I feel
>pic
Was he the same guy that was wearing the goth makeup in the last segment?
don't think so
agree
it is time to get ayy abduction on crack back!!!!
you're insane. the serial killer video tapes was the best shot as far as the actual video tape footage is concerned. easily the most inspired shots in the entire movie.
>Bang on my ass
get a room filtered homosexuals
It's okay. Just okay. Some of the individual stories felt incomplete, whether or not written that way or cut scenes. It is rather long at 1hr 50 m but that's ok. I wasn't ever bored. It needs to go full August Mordum and be about snuff the whole way through
1 = 2 > 94 > Viral = 85 > powergap > 99
I saw them all.
I dont understand how do they manage to make every entry worse than all the others
Except this was better than the last one definitely.
they clearly gave up after vhs2. everything after that was dog shit.
only the first segment was interesting
I hope they finally stop with the decade shit after the 99/94/85 trio and just go back to contemporary with hopefully more of a budget. Unfortunately I think we won't get another one of these for many years now since they barely marketed 85 (they really went all-out for 99 back when that released)
I got 99 and 94 mixed up, I meant 94
>shudder original
yeah it's shit.
i liked it tbh. only weak part was the mexican bit. dragged on too much and then the payoff at the end was dumb. there's never been a movie where they throw on the "evil voice modulation" and have it make something scarier or more exciting, it just makes it feel like a shitty b-movie or a video game. which is an extra shame because the idea of a bunch of first responders stumbling into an ancient catacomb after an earthquake is a solid one.

This with all the Mexican horror ideas they could've done: chupacabra, brujas or satanic narco cult. They did the ancient apocalyptic doom god shit.
watch Satanic Hispanics this month for that stuff

They actually took out the "fascist filmmakers frick off" title this time - as if they admitted defeat kek
>I think most of you are whiny homosexuals with no taste that have no idea what you want from these movies and probably horror in general.

It just wasn't that good, anon.
did your buds and you suck each other off after watching the movie? because you sound like homosexuals
and you sound lonely and bitter

the militia segment was shit but it was still better than anything in 85 besides the breasts
the militia segment was the best one of this new trilogy
despite its many flaws, the subject was my favorite one across the new trilogy of shit. i felt bad for the roboasiatic.
have to disagree but i respect your choice, it's just that it seems like in every one of these there is one director who just needs to be different and ends up screwing over the vibe that all the other segments are going for

Same and agreed. It's imperfect but it's the one most in the spirit of some of those balls to the wall shorts from the early films.

but you're too busy TRYING not to like the movie
felt too much like sinister
only the zombies thing was decent. They need to stop with the summoning devil/god/entity shit because its fricking stupid. Was it a fricking aztec that the woman summoned? holy fricking boring the glitch and the dude with prosthetic eye were miles better
>and the dude with prosthetic eye
That one at least had a cute girl with nice tiddies.
loved this shot
>tfw have to drink burger through straw
did this part remind anyone else of the opening scene from the TCM 2003 remake
>5'6
>opening scene from the TCM 2003 remake
VHS 2 and 94 are so far the best, 85 was alright but all the stories really lacked punch
I just want a movie of parallel monsters and full exploration of the satanist world
Jigsaw = JIgC
Baker = MC
Afraid of Jigsaw? No, I enjoy MC content.
We're all in agreement that 2 is the best one, right?
I had 1 above 2 in my personal rankings for years, but after having watched both movies recently (after having not watched either in a decade) I realized I was wrong and that 2 is the best in the series. I still prefer the naturalness and lo-fi ness of the first movie, but 2 is far more consistent.
1 and 2 are jointly my faves.
Safe Haven is the best story but 1 is the most enjoyable from start to finish.
The segment with the black chick would've been more at home on one of the 90s ones considering the concept and tech involved.
It was definitely the worst one. Not because of the journey, but the destination (all that build up for a generic MONSTER KILLS VICTIM climax).
I'm not quite sure, but I think most segments in 85 was using genuine VHS artifacts and glitches, which is a plus.
I was disappointed by Simon Barrett using a cheap shitty VHS filter for his section in VHS94.
I had to fast forward the eye-phone black girl one, I started pressing -> and waiting for something to happen and nothing happened
My scores:
>Lake shooting story: 7/10 only interesting one
>Mexican earthquake: 2/10
>Black woman eye-phone: 0/10
>Lake shooting story part 2: 6/10
>Emo guy dreams Bobby: 1/10 (they didn't even try here)
>Rory: 3/10 terrible payoff
VHS 1 and 2 will never be surpassed
>>Emo guy dreams Bobby: 1/10 (they didn't even try here)
What? They tried plenty. The execution wasn't good, but you can't say they didn't "try."
Did they ever explain why the lake made those hippies immortal? Why didn't they reappear in the movie when it was heavily implied they were going to go after them for revenge?
Also the detective story was dumb as hell. Why would you leave the kid alive in a room full of loaded weapons after threatening his life?
it's an evil lake. literally named that. they filled the water gun with lake water and it was shown at the party.
>gives absolute creative control to horror directors to do w/e they want
>most of these are fricking garbage
what did they mean by this?
Gave up around segment 5. Unwatchable.
