People here are getting the intended message wrong. Spike Lee isn't saying that whites and blacks can't co-exist, as evidenced by Smiley (the moron). He's saying whites and blacks can't coexist if whites don't stand up to racism.
The problem with Sal (the Italian) is that he claims to support the black community but he turns his back on them when they are victims of police brutality. It's a criticism of white people who claim they aren't racist but support a racist system. If you watch the scene, Mookie (mc) starts the riot after the police kill Radio Raheem and Sal's reaction is to defend the police officers.

The events of the movie wasn't a product of racim. It was a product of clearly mentally challenged black individuals who were going out of their way to fight.
Another message in the movie is the cycle of hate and how it can escalate from small interactions. Spike Lee shows how racism is more nuanced than usually depicted in media. Many of the black characters are also racist and can perpetuate the cycle of hate.
You're right, Raheem started the altercation and he was on top of Sal when the police find him. He was guilty and should have been arrested. But killing him when he's already apprehended is still using excessive force. There's no side that's totally guilty or totally innocent.
Of course realistically Sal would be on the side of the cops who just saved his life... but it's a movie. The intended message is that Sal is defending white supremacy.

Raheem was choked, not shot. You might say it's justified but it's not what police are supposed to do. Police officers are not supposed to judge criminals, they only arrest them so they can be tried and judged later. They should only kill in self-defense. This is not according to me, this is how the system is supposed to work in theory.
As for his skin color being part of his death, that's more up to interpretation. Some might argue that if he were white he wouldn't have died. I'm pretty sure this is Spike Lee's argument. If you notice, Raheem had two friends next to him when he was choking Sal. One was Smiley (white) and one was Bugging Out (black). Bugging Out got arrested but Smiley wasn't, even though neither did any crime.
I believe there's another message here about white alliyship. I think Smiley is an argument for why white people should have an active role in activism as they can use their white privilege to help the cause. Smiley is the one who finally puts a picture of Malcolm X and MLK in the restaurant because he's the only one left standing due to his white privilege.

Raheem is not the perfect innocent victim that the black rioters paint him out to be. Of course if he had behaved perfectly he would not have died. But it's still a double standard as the same can't be said for white people.
This is one of the most important messages of the movie. Racism is not as black and white as the media portrays it. Real life is messy and nuanced. The victims and the perpetrators sometimes switch roles.
If you try to take another man's life you forfeit your right to complain. The law protecting you is more like a courtesy in the heat of the crime. But that's my opnion and that's neither here or there.
Bugging out also actively went out of his way to seek conflict with Sal, complaining about the pictures that, by all means, he has no say over (or had any good reason to be offended by them). He is probably the most responsible for the violent riot that comes.

The problem with Sal (the Italian) is that he claims to support the black community but he turns his back on them when they are victims of police brutality. It's a criticism of white people who claim they aren't racist but support a racist system. If you watch the scene, Mookie (mc) starts the riot after the police kill Radio Raheem and Sal's reaction is to defend the police officers.

The events of the movie wasn't a product of racim. It was a product of clearly mentally challenged black individuals who were going out of their way to fight.
Another message in the movie is the cycle of hate and how it can escalate from small interactions. Spike Lee shows how racism is more nuanced than usually depicted in media. Many of the black characters are also racist and can perpetuate the cycle of hate.
You're right, Raheem started the altercation and he was on top of Sal when the police find him. He was guilty and should have been arrested. But killing him when he's already apprehended is still using excessive force. There's no side that's totally guilty or totally innocent.
Of course realistically Sal would be on the side of the cops who just saved his life... but it's a movie. The intended message is that Sal is defending white supremacy.

Raheem was choked, not shot. You might say it's justified but it's not what police are supposed to do. Police officers are not supposed to judge criminals, they only arrest them so they can be tried and judged later. They should only kill in self-defense. This is not according to me, this is how the system is supposed to work in theory.
As for his skin color being part of his death, that's more up to interpretation. Some might argue that if he were white he wouldn't have died. I'm pretty sure this is Spike Lee's argument. If you notice, Raheem had two friends next to him when he was choking Sal. One was Smiley (white) and one was Bugging Out (black). Bugging Out got arrested but Smiley wasn't, even though neither did any crime.
I believe there's another message here about white alliyship. I think Smiley is an argument for why white people should have an active role in activism as they can use their white privilege to help the cause. Smiley is the one who finally puts a picture of Malcolm X and MLK in the restaurant because he's the only one left standing due to his white privilege.

Raheem was literally in the middle of strangling Sal when they restrained him with the choke hold and he was resisting it the whole time. Maybe Raheem should have chilled his violent chimp brain out and he would have lived.
Raheem is not the perfect innocent victim that the black rioters paint him out to be. Of course if he had behaved perfectly he would not have died. But it's still a double standard as the same can't be said for white people.
This is one of the most important messages of the movie. Racism is not as black and white as the media portrays it. Real life is messy and nuanced. The victims and the perpetrators sometimes switch roles.
If you try to take another man's life you forfeit your right to complain. The law protecting you is more like a courtesy in the heat of the crime. But that's my opnion and that's neither here or there.
Bugging out also actively went out of his way to seek conflict with Sal, complaining about the pictures that, by all means, he has no say over (or had any good reason to be offended by them). He is probably the most responsible for the violent riot that comes.
Smiley does no such thing in comparison.

The police did not know any of the backstory about Bugging Out starting the conflict He got arrested for being black.
