This, plus with how smooth he is in asking her out. Unless this is through his perspective and he's an unreliable narrator or some shit. There's no way the proto-incel wouldn't be stuttering and tripping over his words, avoiding eye contact, etc.

Probably getting no jail time after going on a shooting spree.

I do think the ending is in his mind. It's a pretty effective ending, because on one hand we never see anything before then that's purely Travis's imagination. On the other hand, it makes no sense at all to get a happy ending. Simple and effective.

IF it really happens that way, I think it could possibly make sense if Sport wasn't bleeding from the location where he was shot to the hotel where he fires on Bickle. Only a minute or so goes by, so I wonder if forensics would've been good enough to know whether Bickle shot first. I think the police could've concluded Sport shot at him first, and everything else was self-defence.
Then again, he was armed to the teeth like Rambo. Maybe they wouldn't care? I dunno, it's somewhat plausible.

It's not a happy ending exactly. After he drops off Betsy, he drives off and looks in the rear view for just a split second and schizo'ed out at something he saw on the street... then goes back to the normal. He's still a loose cannon and probably went on doing other shit.

Martin Scorsese has confirmed that the ending was in fact not in Travis' head, but he thinks its a good theory. What he was going for was showing how the media glorifies violent acts.

I think the most unbelievable part was that he thought it would be ok to go to a porno theater for his date. He was schizo, but not autistic.

Red herring. It seems like everything's alright but both points are presented by people who don't know the real Travis. Despite getting the outburst of violence and just cause that Travis wished for he's still a ticking time bomb.

The way Travis kept shitting on the curly headed simp while having coffee with Betsy was really weird. All his courting of her was awkward.

          > The fact that it worked as well as it did was unrealistic to me.

It was young Robert De Niro, so he was good looking. Good looking guys can get away with being awkward, in the short term at least. Women think its cute. But it wears off fast once they realize the awkwardness comes from a place of social or mental maladjustment, as we saw in the film when he takes her to the porn theater.

He wasn't that good looking. Just normal, I thought. Irl, he tried to ask Cybill out and she blew him off. So he didn't talk to her the whole film except in character during scenes. That's the real Bickle treatment.

This movies a sequel to The Deer Hunter right? I mean like Travis being the protagonist of The Deer Hunter just having switched his name and trying to deal with the awful shit he saw, even lying about his involvement in the US Marines to try and distance himself from his past (the ending newspapers mention Travis as being apart of special forces and the patches on his clothes don’t match up)

Who doesn't have a happy ending in this movie, considering its plot? Only the three criminals Bickle murders, that's it you goose fricker.
    Palantine avoids being assassinated.
Iris goes home to her parents
Bickle successfully evades capture after attempting to murder a politician, then not only gets away with committing a MASSACRE, he is lauded for it and actually comes out the other side as a better man.

Is Scorsese telling us Bickle has more trouble on the horizon? Yes, but that's besides the point (the same thing could be said for all of us) because we're not talking about the fanfiction ending to the movie's sequel as it plays out in your mind.
We're talking about the ending to the movie we see, which is overall positive and happy for everyone involved except the bad guys. It's such a positive ending, it doesn't even seem real, and many viewers think it was a fricking dream sequence, you absolute grass cutter.

What happens to Travis Bickle when he looks in his rearview mirror, and what he sees, is up to interpretation.
What is not up to interpretation, at the end of the movie:
    >Bickle evades Secret Service, makes them look like buffoons
    >filthy pimps and gangsters shot to death in a glorious bloodbath
    >Bickle is a fricking invincible terminator
    >Travis Bickle is a H-E-R-O
    >Iris scared straight, flees back to parents at lightspeed
    >her parents love Bickle so much he is part of their family
    >Betsy gagging for big hero taxi driver wiener
    >Bickle's haircut is nicer than it has ever been
