That Cybil Shepherd would give either him or Albert Brooks the time of day.
Certainly in the way Travis courts her
A lot of pimps arent massive dudes
Yeah I can see Jodie's character hanging out with him, she is supposed to be 12 and would't be creeped out since she's a hooker, but not Betsy
She thought he was a John at first, and he paid for her "time". He said shit that probably made her think though.
This, plus with how smooth he is in asking her out. Unless this is through his perspective and he's an unreliable narrator or some shit. There's no way the proto-incel wouldn't be stuttering and tripping over his words, avoiding eye contact, etc.
The pimp being played by a short little butthole but it was the 70s I guess
It was originally a black pimp, but they changed it to Harvey Keitel to avoid race war
Charlie Manson was originally a pimp and wanted to be the best one in America so it’s not out of the realm of possibility to have a psycho manlet as one.
The fact that they put Robert De Niro as Travis and not me
Anon was your father even alive when Taxi Driver came out
ye he was a wee lil lad tho
I love De Niro
>almost 30
>still relate to this movie
am I ngmi?
Travis is 26 in the film
Its already over
Chubby Ricci in Buffalo '66 made me feel things.
Skinny hillbilly bawd Ricci in Black Snake Moan made me feel things.
I think I just like Christina Ricci.
I'm nearly 30 and Taxi Driver is one of my favourite films
It's not a 'he's literally me' film though, not even close
Travis isn't literally me, but I wish I was literally him.
tfw no gf to span time with
Stop being a self-aggrandizing egotist. Take on responsibility.
the epilogue
a white taxi driver in new york
In the Seventies? Sure but anything later stretches plausibility
The ending. He killed a bunch of people and we're supposed to believe he was just let off?
Its not real, its Travis dying dream full of wish fulfillment
>but the writer said blah blah blah
don't care
>DUDE
>IT WAS JUST A DREAM/HALLUCINATION/ALL IN HIS HEAD
I do think the ending is in his mind. It's a pretty effective ending, because on one hand we never see anything before then that's purely Travis's imagination. On the other hand, it makes no sense at all to get a happy ending. Simple and effective.
IF it really happens that way, I think it could possibly make sense if Sport wasn't bleeding from the location where he was shot to the hotel where he fires on Bickle. Only a minute or so goes by, so I wonder if forensics would've been good enough to know whether Bickle shot first. I think the police could've concluded Sport shot at him first, and everything else was self-defence.
Then again, he was armed to the teeth like Rambo. Maybe they wouldn't care? I dunno, it's somewhat plausible.
It's not a happy ending exactly. After he drops off Betsy, he drives off and looks in the rear view for just a split second and schizo'ed out at something he saw on the street... then goes back to the normal. He's still a loose cannon and probably went on doing other shit.
Martin Scorsese has confirmed that the ending was in fact not in Travis' head, but he thinks its a good theory. What he was going for was showing how the media glorifies violent acts.
I think the most unbelievable part was that he thought it would be ok to go to a porno theater for his date. He was schizo, but not autistic.
>I think the most unbelievable part was that he thought it would be ok to go to a porno theater for his date
You know what, you're correct
I watched a porn with a first time date. I put it on in my apartment after we got back then she suddenly excused herself and called a cab home. I thought it’d get her horny but I obviously fricked up. I imagine lots of dudes do this so it isn’t unrealistic
>happy ending
what fricking movie were you watching because it wasnt this one
He got away with murder and was lauded as a hero for it, saved Jodie Foster, made Betsy crawl back to him for attention, and cleaned up.
>but he looked in his rearview mirror!
He saw your dumb Black person face.
Both Scorsese and Deniro said the mirror scene was purposeful. He wasn't alright at the end.
The film is Schrader's baby. Deniro and Scorcese's interpretations are just that.
It's not a happy ending. There was no catharsis. Travis is still a violent schizo
>It's not a happy ending.
It's a positive outcome for Travis.
>There was no catharsis.
What do you call the pan over the newspaper clippings and the voiceover from Jodie Foster's parents? That is a moronic thing for you to say.
>Travis is still a violent schizo
We don't see what happens next, and you aren't a mind reader. Could've been annoyed over something he'd forget about the next day like someone tailgating.
extremely filtered
lazy bait
>It's a positive outcome for Travis.
He got away with no criminal charges and praise but nothing changes for him. He's still a neglected combat vet doing night shifts to get his mind off of things. Nothing's changed.
>What do you call the pan over the newspaper clippings and the voiceover from Jodie Foster's parents?
Red herring. It seems like everything's alright but both points are presented by people who don't know the real Travis. Despite getting the outburst of violence and just cause that Travis wished for he's still a ticking time bomb.
>Could've been annoyed over something he'd forget about the next day like someone tailgating
Come on bruv
>Whats the most unrealistic aspect of this movie?
Probably getting no jail time after going on a shooting spree.
that Travis didn't
>Is fine with murder
>Won't frick the underage prostitute who has already taken hundreds of dicks because it's le wrong
Movie is so boring its my sleep flick
The White pimp I’m 1970s NYC was a bit of a stretch. As I recall, the studio didn’t want to upset the Kangs.
the white pimps.
I literally just got done watching it for the first time like 5 minutes ago.
Overhyped. Probably won't watch again but I don't think it was a waste of time or anything.
The way Travis kept shitting on the curly headed simp while having coffee with Betsy was really weird. All his courting of her was awkward.
I was hoping for more action honestly but I guess it's just not that kind of movie.
>his courting was awkward
Thats the point
The fact that it worked as well as it did was unrealistic to me. That was my answer to OPs question but I see now I failed to clarify that. My bad.
Also thought it was odd he wanted to go full vigilante mode but didn't seem to carry any extra mags/ammo for his guns.
> The fact that it worked as well as it did was unrealistic to me.
It was young Robert De Niro, so he was good looking. Good looking guys can get away with being awkward, in the short term at least. Women think its cute. But it wears off fast once they realize the awkwardness comes from a place of social or mental maladjustment, as we saw in the film when he takes her to the porn theater.
Yeah dude was fricked in the head. I wish we got to learn more of why other than sleep deprivation. I mean something was causing the sleep deprivation to start with right. He was a marine but they don't really go into his past too much or directly say if he was in Nam or not.
The lack of media literacy among zoomers is alarming
It's implied heavily that he has PTSD after being wounded in vietnam. He was in the marines, has a large scar on his back, a vietcong flag in his apartment and has insomnia
I enjoy the theory he just larped as a vet
He wasn't that good looking. Just normal, I thought. Irl, he tried to ask Cybill out and she blew him off. So he didn't talk to her the whole film except in character during scenes. That's the real Bickle treatment.
Well frick her then. Her best starring role before Taxi Driver was The Last Picture Show where she played a bawd. If it wasn’t for Moonlighting and Bruce Willis becoming a star she wouldn’t be even remembered today. In fact she’s only talked about BECAUSE of Taxi Driver. What an uppity b***h
It's time to let it go Rob, it's been like 50 years.
You dense mother fricker.
Taxi Driver is a little overrated, but you are unrionically too dumb for it lol.
That he was an incel. I mean like young Robert Denison was a handsome fricker, even tho he was short. Travis could of hit on any girl and they’d be bouncing on his wiener in his cab in like less then ten minutes.
I have a Mandela effect for this movie I could have sworn it ends with him doing the finger gun to his head after the shootout
?? But it does? Every time i've seen that bit whether on youtube or my downloaded copy he does the finger gun to the head.
Case in point when the cop is aiming at him.
I think he means that he remembers that being the ending of the film without the scene afterwards.
to be fair it might as well could end there
This movies a sequel to The Deer Hunter right? I mean like Travis being the protagonist of The Deer Hunter just having switched his name and trying to deal with the awful shit he saw, even lying about his involvement in the US Marines to try and distance himself from his past (the ending newspapers mention Travis as being apart of special forces and the patches on his clothes don’t match up)
He also lifts his finger up just like the Russian roulette scene
I live fan fiction theories like this. As dumb as it sounds I convinced myself that Carlito’s Way was a sequel to Scarface cause Tony Montana survived and went under a new identity hence it’s the real ending.
The movie really would have been more kino if Travis died
>takes someone to a porno cinema for a date
This still baffles me. He obviously just did in an attempt to get her horny, but there are several more subtle ways of doing that. And then he butns all bridges with her by confronting her whilst she is at work
Who doesn't have a happy ending in this movie, considering its plot? Only the three criminals Bickle murders, that's it you goose fricker.
Palantine avoids being assassinated.
Iris goes home to her parents
Bickle successfully evades capture after attempting to murder a politician, then not only gets away with committing a MASSACRE, he is lauded for it and actually comes out the other side as a better man.
Is Scorsese telling us Bickle has more trouble on the horizon? Yes, but that's besides the point (the same thing could be said for all of us) because we're not talking about the fanfiction ending to the movie's sequel as it plays out in your mind.
We're talking about the ending to the movie we see, which is overall positive and happy for everyone involved except the bad guys. It's such a positive ending, it doesn't even seem real, and many viewers think it was a fricking dream sequence, you absolute grass cutter.
What happens to Travis Bickle when he looks in his rearview mirror, and what he sees, is up to interpretation.
What is not up to interpretation, at the end of the movie:
>Bickle evades Secret Service, makes them look like buffoons
>filthy pimps and gangsters shot to death in a glorious bloodbath
>Bickle is a fricking invincible terminator
>Travis Bickle is a H-E-R-O
>Iris scared straight, flees back to parents at lightspeed
>her parents love Bickle so much he is part of their family
>Betsy gagging for big hero taxi driver wiener
>Bickle's haircut is nicer than it has ever been
