What's the next "Heaven's Gate" going to be?
A commercial flop with a budget so large for the time that heads roll at the studio and Hollywood changes it's ways.

3 hour 39 minute, $170 million dollar (in 2024 dollars) western released in a time of economic stagnation in America
It was a massive flop that lost the studio over 150 million
It would be considered one of the things that helped kill the "New Hollywood" movement of relative independence from studio officials

So is the movie any good or was everyone just poor and couldn't go to the movies?

It's bloated to the point of being not good.

the story is fundamentally flawed but it has several cinematically impressive sequences.
the ending scenes are extremely damaging as the movie tries to make some kind of literary point but just makes the filmmakers look like out-of-touch asshats.

I liked it, but I'm a NEET with plenty of time on my hands
Most people on their time off work aren't going to watch a movie that's nearly four hours, even in 1980

In hindsight they should have split into quarters and made it a miniseries.

it would have needed substantial rewrites. as is, its not clear enough why the bad guys are bad and why the central conflict is happening.

It's not about runtime, there's plenty of 3h+ classic epics that flow excellently, and Heaven's Gate simply drags. The film is too ambitious for Cimino's skill (wasn't it only his third film? or fourth?) and he should've been bullied into rejecting his megalomania.

there is no current Hollywood counter-culture to kill.
case in point: there are fewer wide releases than ever this year, but more of them are shitty IP slop than any time before.
the whole "woke v anti-woke" debate isn't going to be replaced by based and trad movies, or by movies made with AI, its going to be replaced with Netflixslop and nothing.

    >heads roll at the studio and Hollywood changes it's ways
That's simply not possible anymore, because even popcorn entertainment is flopping and Hollywood doesn't know what to do
Hollywood is going to end up like Detroit, except instead of cars made overseas undercutting the American institution to bankruptcy, it's going to be social media and video games

    >consequences for hollywood
    >Economic consequences for hollywood

Since 2012, hollywood and the media have been propaganda/psyop farms of FEDGOV, same as the news media. In fact, economic failure only binds them closer to the regime and emphasizes the need for more propaganda.

        you're not wrong

Watch old stuff, try anime, write your congresscritter and demand they repeal the smith-mundt modernization act. Tell other people about the above. Try to get (real) people to sign (IRL) petitions, and send them to congresscritters. IDK, I feel like public engagement in the political process is so low no that any group that can make a fair amount of noise/deliver protests has a good chance of getting it's interests heard. We'll see how things go with Palestine protests. Ps, go to your local pro-palestine protests, make as big a crowd as you can. It's not about the palestinians, it's about making the israelites and ZOG show their hand.

Honestly the answer is Deadpool 3

If that flops the superhero movie genre and Hollywood in general are going to have to ask real questions of itself

There will be no more excuses if Deadpool 3 flops. Superhero films won't vanish (musicals and westerns are still around after their heydays) but that's THE Bellwether. If a Ryan Reynolds superhero crossover movie can't get people to theaters the industry will start to pivot. It is the last sure thing according to modern Hollywood logic.
