I would assume the best horrors are the ones that are neither too pretentious or too dummed down then. The Shining would be a good example.
That's usually the best - movies that put in a good effort, but don't take themselves too seriously.
Ghosts. It's largely just dumb shit without enough reason behind it. Either it's silliness like the Japs with solid ghosts, e.g Grudge, tacky see through ghosts, or a totally invisibly entity like Paranormal Activity (I think, couldn't sit through it all) and none of them work for me. Plus I can't help but imagine some sort of Beetlejuice shenanigans going on behind the scenes.
