Not really, most are strawmen that existed to be humiliated & killed.

All the main characters, barring Homelander, are better in the comic, The Boys and Stillwell especially.
The show is such a terrible, unfunny piece of capeshit, I don't know how people are still watching it.
The comic is poorly-edited mediocrity worsened by terrible art, and honestly, shouldn't be read by anyone.

NATO is a joke and shouldn't exist due to the insane spending and lack of support it provides the world. A commonwealth of nations that acts like children on the playground. It was the definition of a power fantasy. It was an entire setting where Ennis gets to point and laugh at superheroes. At one point there’s a two page spread of the American military blowing apart superheroes into wet chunks of gore. One comic has a cover that was literally just superheroes flying into a giant toilet

How did you miss all the issues Ennis dedicated to criticizing the military (both American and English)? The fact that there's one scene where the military is competent doesn't make it a power fantasy.

            Anonymous

The power fantasy is for Miller dingbat. The fantasy was writing a world in which his view on super heroes was correct, and he could go around shitting on them.

The efficacy of the military has nothing to do with that fantasy. He just uses them as a tool at times.

Name literally one time the Gary Sue self insert was in any danger at all. Name one time anything approached a balanced fight scene and not just the Gary Sue gang murdering all the heroes . It's literally just an Ennis power fantasy because all the Gary Sues are fricking invincible and all powerful and everyone else is a joke. And of course even Gary Sue Butcher himself has the fricking inevitable Ennis mummy issues pining about the bestest women ever.

There's a hint of cringe power fantasy in the original boys but I think to call that the entire point, all of the meat there is is a bit disingenuous. Butcher is the COOL BADASS SUPERHERO KILLER but he's never your point of view, that's Hughie, who you're always worried about being corrupted by Butcher because he's one of like two halfway decent-seeming people in the setting.

While I can see the point of view that it's just too consistently vile to enjoy, I don't know if I agree with the move of making the superhero characters multifaceted. I don't like the fact that Homelander is a genuinely popular and iconic character now, moreso than the main characters, and not someone genuinely too slimy to enjoy.

It's been awhile since I read the comic, and I don't think it's incredible, or anything, but part of the point is that the influential and powerful aren't especially complicated. They're just greedy, covetous c**ts.

      >I don't like the fact that Homelander is a genuinely popular and iconic character now, moreso than the main characters
genuinely is because of the actor, he really can act and that in turn makes you like Homelander regardless of how much a piece of shit he is

I like the comics, in that I could imagine real-life superheroes acting like modern celebrities - aka getting away with heinous acts, being depraved douches, and having their agency/managers try to sweep a bunch of bullshit under the rug.

However, its real apparent the Ennis is a fricking chickenhawk and has a hard-on for the military/police forces. He almost never depicts them to be as shitty as Vought, The Boys, or any supes.

No fricking shit, you stupid fricking homosexual.
From the Bush caricature that is Vic the Veep, to "The Homelander" being a reference to homeland security.
My point was the majority of the time, police/mil are shown in-comic shaking their fists that some supe fricked up and made a situation worse. But even the criticism of all that shit is behind a veneer of superhero culture. Usually corruption is a mulit-layer issue.

Because cops/military just take their orders from other people. If you want to look at Ennis being critical of cops, look at Red Team which is all about bunch of cops deciding to become vigilante killers to get baddies who deserve it and how it all goes to shit, and how then it's all covered up when the two last survivers don't die in the inevitable bloody shoot up and iirc just get assigned to shit duty by the department hoping they'll quit.

I think this is why the plotline with Starlight losing her faith felt kind of out of place in the show. The kind of Christian subculture the show criticizes hasn't really been relevant in the mainstream for like fifteen years, while everything else the show touches on is fairly current and topical. That whole subplot was straight out of the mid-2000s.

        Anonymous

That's a big failing of both the show and comic. Mid 2000s Evangelocon movements were an anomaly, and the most ardent members of that demographic have been dying off for years, or falling out of favor with the public eye. You can still write stories about characters that struggle with faith, but it can't be shackled to such dated sentiments

Kavanaugh, Gorsuch and ACB all said Roe was settled law. Then they immediately turned around and reversed when they got thr chance because they just wanted it reversed. And it also conveniently opened the door to overturn other precedents that were based on the same right to privacy principle, i.e. contraceptives, gay marriage, blowjobs and anal sex, same sex marriage, etc. all coincidentally things conservatives want to get rid off. Hell, Thomas blatantly said in his writing that they were now going to go after them, signalling the base to start to look for cases they could send to SCOTUS to use as an excuse to overturn those precedents.

they said it was settled law/the law of the land.

Note how they never said "we won't change the precedent".

It doesn't change anything about the fact they overturned Roe simply for their ideological views. Note how only Roberts wanted to lower the time frame for abortions where as everyone else went full in on reversing Roe. It's pure right wing ideology dictates cases now, and it's clear from their rulings, like how they immediately started gutting multiple amendment rights now that they have a clear supermajority that Roberts can't block by pretending to be moderate for hid legacy.

I fricking hate deconstructions of the superhero genre they are done right one or twice but the rest is pretentious garbage. As for the boys it takes the usual issues with this genre and cranks it up to eleven by making the heros cartoonishly evil because something something absolute power corrupts absolutely so you can't take it seriously. The only scene I like is the one where that business man calls Homelander out for being a basic handlebar mustache twiddling homosexual

Ok but seriously, how do the comics compare to the show in terms of story and character

      Anonymous

The comics are more like a irreverent spy story featuring cape hunters. The Boys don't start from the start annoying the Seven, but go around messing with minor cape groups and ruining their day with blackmail and/or beatdowns so they answer for their frick ups. As the conspiracies escalate, so do the interest of the Seven.

Since they work for the CIA from the start, most early plotlines involves with conspiracies related with supes, and when not mocking capes, Ennis' pitch black comedy is aimed at the glowie antics and the US politics since WW2.

  46. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

It's needlessly edgy and meandering with far too many minis
It's also extremely bluepilled since capitalism is the root of the cape problem

Superheroes but sinful? If you avoid things with summation like that, then you probably wouldn't care to begin with it honestly.
They Boys is edgier than say Venture bros. but doesn't 100% take itself seriously like Invincible.
'Heroes' in The Boys are petty celebrity buttholes, and the strongest of them is no better.

He wasn't stronger than him, he was just conditioned to believe his only purpose in life was "kill Homelander when we tell you to". The guys at Vought figured that along with the element of surprise would be enough of a failsafe if they ever needed to use it, but also they were dumb morons who didn't anticipate that conditioning a mentally unstable superhuman with a singular purpose and then telling him not to fulfill that purpose for his entire life might make him even more unstable. Because Vought being a soulless corporation that makes terrible decisions constantly is one of the central themes of the series.

They fought head to head, and he killed HL in one punch. Pretty sure he was stronger. Either way, the twist is dumb when you think about for more than a couple seconds, and BN in the show is way better

          Anonymous

He didn't kill him in one punch tho. The fight went on offscreen and you can see Black noir's body almost completely destroyed as well

          Anonymous

He was stronger than Homelander. The fact that he killed Homelander without being able to fly proves it.

All we saw from the fight was BN taking off Homelanders lower jaw (as in, separate it from his head) with one punch, while Homelander laser eyebeamed one of Black Noirs arm. Then at the end a crippled black noir stumbled across the lawn holding Homelanders head.

Supes in The Boys generally have very low resilience however, so this tells us nothing as to which one was stronger. It could just be that they are both so heavyweight that one punch from either would carve a hole in the other. That plus BN having a supposed surprise hit is what would have made him an effective way to police Homelander.

It occurs to me that the main reason most of the Twitter dipshits hate the comic (at least those who bother to read it rather than just parroting the reasons they should supposedly hate it from their favorite YouTuber) is because they literally were not alive or were too young to remember the era that the book is set in, which is extremely important to the story. And unlike stuff like watchmen set during the cold war, children these days get pretty much no education on how culture was affected by the political climate of the early 2000s.

If you'd asked me back when season 1 first came out I would agreed that the show is better, but as it is now I think the show's progressively gotten much worse and most of its problems can be traced back to the adaptational changes it made from the comics
    >the titular Boys are the least interesting characters of the show
    >Show Butcher has completely lost the great characterisation of Comics Butcher, as well as having no real motivation thanks to the backstory change
    >they sped through some major plot points of the comic in the first season like the Hughie/Annie relationship and Homelander's mental state, which was good imo, but have failed to keep that pace since
    >similarly, having the Seven as the antagonists from the start was good at first but it ended up meaning that there's little in terms of escalation in either narrative or threat
    >the gore in the show occupies a weird middle ground between being over the top and too realistic, which doesn't work well despite the creators using it so often
The one consistently good part of the show is that near everything to do with Homelander and the supes is better than in the comics

Becca Butcher's rewrite is the shittiest part. If they bring up HL's cum strength, we might get a twist with BN, but that's about it. Doesn't help they're making Butcher a pseudo-father figure.

        >Want to keep her alive because you don’t want to have a Woman in the Refrigerator (Google it)
        >Kill her off anyways

It really is the worst change. I can understand not wanting to fridge her, but they really should've just kept it the way it was since a) it provides a personal reason for Butcher to hate supes and Homelander in particular, and b) her death isn't about developing Butcher and regresses him instead, with the ultimate point being that women are absolutely needed in life
Especially since in the show it just ends up that Butcher completely gets the wind taken out of sails and they make Becca into kind of an butthole instead of a kind woman who Butcher worshipped

I'll just wait till M.M., Frenchie and Female get Butchered or maybe they'll kill them off in a tasteful way, that's one gripe I gave the comics and I don't mind the rest of the boys.
As you (or someone else) pointed out, the problem with the show is we barely got enough of boys.
I think this is just a result of avoiding the super fetus thing, I don't think any writer/director has the balls to put that on screen yet/

In my opinion, they wanted to give Butcher motivation about Supes because of Ryan's powers (and the context that made him go pew pew) while giving him some compassion and forgiving the kid.
I guess that I could buy that IF they made a whole episode about it and not just 10 minutes

I feel they are trying way too hard to make butcher sympathetic, he was always a fricking sociopath in the comic.

The entire point was butcher was a sociopath whose wife was the one thing not triggering him to be a maniac. This was to contrast Homelander, who was not a sociopath and was eventually conditioned into one through manipulation.

                Anonymous

Yeah I feel the show really misses the point that Butcher is genuinely a nasty, evil guy. Though tbf in the comics the fact's not really communicated directly to the reader until you hit the back half of the series, so the show might lean on that a bit more once it starts heading towards the end

Yeah, Ennis is a big of a fricking shit writer at times, but Homelander and Butcher are actually amazingly written in the grand scheme of things.

If you took Homelander and Butcher, gave them the exact same upbringing, the same loving family and it would be Billy who would be the villain.

the way he kills all the other boys is absolutely devoid of passion, a literal psychopath.

Literally throughout the entire series you rarely see butcher get emotionally hurt by anything besides his dog.

                >Homelander and Butcher are actually amazingly written in the grand scheme of things.
Butcher's character and that final arc is basically 90% of the reason why I'll happily say I like the comic despite all the other shit in it. It's fully worth powering through the worst of it to get the full story because Butcher is genuinely great
It's part of why I'm disappointed in the show because I find their version of the Boys are underdeveloped and mostly unlikeable, especially in comparison to their comic counterparts. If/when the show tries to adapt the final part of the comic it won't work half as well since Butcher and Hughie are massively different characters and no one really cares about the rest of the Boys. They threw out the baby with the bathwater when it came to them

I feel like they could've easily merged the deeper characterisation of the shows Homelander with the gradual descent into madness of the comic
But instead most of the supposed tension in the show has come from them going "ooh look Homelander's doing his shaky jaw clench thing, is he gonna go mad now or not, we don't know!" and it's been like that since season 1

        Anonymous

Exactly. Homelander feels like he was always going to crumble under the pressure, not a combination of constant ego inflation and sadistic manipulation leading to him have a complete meltdown.

It makes it less impactful when he's an actual sociopath, the horrible things he "did" and the reaction is what made Homelander snap.

Why would they, if anything Noir actually has a character, he does like 4-5 things worth noting in the comics and only really serves for the twist. He's still a Vaught hitman, we have a better reason for him to 'plausibly' pose a HL, he's be shown to have tried to replace out of date heroes before, he probably got augmented somehow (still disfigured underneath).
All that said, I haven't seen it. People are hoping he'll beat the shit out of SB and become a hero if anything.

I think The Boys has several good ideas that are executed a bit overly edgy and cringe

  65. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

I know that most people are gonna not like the Boys comic because it's not politically correct and whatever. Personally I don't like it because of how over the top edgy and vulgar it is. Every page is littered swearing, every fight is a bloodbath, Every sex act is gross, there's shit and piss everywhere. You could cobble together a good story out of the good parts but there's so much needless edge in it.
Also it's just got such a downer view on super heroes in general. I get it, Super heroes are a bunch of spoiled frat boy douchebags. But outside of Starlight and Super Duper, just about EVERY Supe we meet is exactly the same way. It doesn't feel like commentary at a certain point, it feels like a circle jerk. A nonstop repitition of the same idea of "superheroes bad" that gets stale in a fricking hurry. I love the Gang's dynamic, Some of the fights are good. There are a few arcs that show the depth of the characters in ways that I think are really good. But it feels like there's way too many detours into just edge for edginess' sake.
The show changed a bit TOO much but in order to be coherent it absolutely had to change some of it.

It starts to make sense when "superheroes" in this setting are just analogs for American Celebrities.

I think that makes it more obnoxious. "Boy howdy, Celebrites sure are ALL irredeemable dumbass fratboy douchebags who'd be better of getting bludgeoned by a bunch of regular guys." We get glimpses of non supes being ok people but the overwhelming majority are just irredeemable pieces of shit, not just in the dozens but in the hundreds.I get it, celebrities bad, but I'd find it obnoxious to read a whole comic about how bad they are. I don't wanna read a TMZ comic.

Stormfront in the comics was fun in an over the top "aren't Nazis a bunch of stupid self-righteous shitters" kind of way. He was a major threat, but the comic had fun with him being such an unrepentant evil shit and he gets a great comeuppance
Meanwhile Show Stormfront is treated uber seriously because apparently you can't have fun bashing in a literal Nazi villain any more, so everything with her is just played completely straight. I think the you demonstrate the difference between the show and the comic in how they criticize wokeness.
    >In the show, it's actually a recurring subplot with Maeve and integrated into the setting where Vought tries to profit off it by slapping LGBT rep onto their products and it's also an attempt by Homelander to intimidate Maeve by outing her.
    >In the comic, the story stops and Hughie suddenly gets possessed to become an author avatar where he does a whole monologue about how wokeness is bad because sjws are evil and don't actually care about their cause (but also Hughie and Starlight help a trans character to show Ennis is not a homophobe or anything)
The show actually shows, the comic just tells.

Arc after arc that just goes nowhere, endless lore dumps that tell you shit you already figured out in the first couple issues, dialogue that stretches on and on with no point (Ennis can't write an interesting conversation to save his life, a problem that also rears its head in Preacher).

the Boys comic nailed the feeling of a 16-year-old edgelord writing out what he thinks would be a cool story.

Well, if you were a 16-year-old edge lord who thought anime was for homosexuals, growing up in the late 80s early 90s, you probably would write a series about super cool dudes who kill the superheroes who are actually buttholes.

But another big point in the comics' favour; the bond between Butcher and Hughie is excellent, and one of the reasons the last arc hits as well as it does.

It's actually not a half bad "commentary" on american social apathy, selfishness, witless pride, and soulless american corporatism, but it's a little mired in over-the-top, edgy gore violence and sex violence, and yet all that edgyness actually works with the story and fits the tone, so only people with "sensitive sensibilities" will really be put off by it.

how the frick they thought replacing this with the girlpower scene was a good idea I will never understand.

It shouldnt surprise anyone honestly. My first reaction to Boys being adapted was "Who the frick would want to adapt The Boys in modern America?", and then "HOW would you adapt The Boys in modern day America?". Of course the answer to both questions was "With lots of editing and story changes obviously. So much so that it probably completely ruins the concept and isn't worth a watch."

And I was right, every change i've read about sounded stupid and just pissed me off. Frenchie's one of my favorite characters, and his relationship with The Female is one of the funnest things about the books, and they completely ruined him and that from what i've seen and read.

Hoping? Really? You know for a fact they're not going to adapt a scene where a white man kills a black man who insulted/harmed his father, and "took the white man's girl". Besides, they dropped the whole "Frenchie is basically a high functioning but ultraviolent lunatic" angle from his character. He's just some gun/drug smuggling half-russian guy now.

Clearly you're wrong because the show's a great success and many agree that it actually improves the material because it's not so hyper focused on Ennis taking the piss on capes. The Boys is a prime example of taking a source material and improving it with changes. Only purist would think they were wrong to make major changes necessary to update it to modern day.

At least with Crossed you get exactly what you paid for.
The Boy's tricks you into thinking it's a satire and it sometimes is but often it's just Ennis's usual b***hing about how all capeshit is cringe and he wishes Batman and Superman got raped to death.

The Boys TV show is much, much worse. A soulless corporate product about soulless corporate products. It has no artistic touch it's just slop for the masses that makes fun of slop for the masses and people are too dumb to notice it. The comic isn't a masterpiece or anything (outside of the final Butcher and Hughie fight) but it is atleast an artist doing what he wants. If you like the TV show or say it's better you are part of the problem. Frick you.

        see

The comic suffered the same problem Kick-Ass did where tonal inconsistency kept undercutting the story so you have incredibly dead serious moments head on colliding with Garth wanting to get goofy with parodying Marvel/DC and pushing the envelope with what could be allowed in the comic
But that's nothing compared to how dogshit moronic this show is

I think I prefer the shows soldier boy to the comics. Anthony Star does a great job as Homelander the periodic woke stuff is kind of jarring, and also christians being depicted as being taken advantage of by hypocritical homosexuals who runs cults of personality just isn't based in reality. Maybe for catholics that is true but real christians dont fall for that shit and know that churches and the worship of the lord shouldn't be treated as a commercial enterprise.

Oh yeah, that explains why there are so many mega churches in the US. Barely any "real" Christians exist in the country.

    >I'm going to ask all these people who are way too into superhero comic books about a comic book that does nothing but shit on superhero comic books
    >Wow, they all seem to hate it
It's a good comic if you aren't the type of person who enjoys superhero comics, but I do think he went too far in a few places with the edge, but it is all in service to the story.
The TV show is a completely different beast and could have never been true to the comics, which again, explicitly shit all over the kind of people making the show and the mega corporations that fund them.

  103. 2 years ago

Nothing. Some of the offensive humor isn't really in service of the plot or characters, so some characters are just irredeemable. Like I don't remeber A-Train ever being someone the writer wants you to feel bad for. If you're comparing it to the show, the biggest difference is the Show had a more interesting "The Seven" while The Boys themselves are the more boring parts, especially season 2. But the comic is still way more interesting as it stands now.

It's a crude deconstruct of superheroes that did more for shock value than the medium itself. But it had great Character development and insane action thay made it a fun read.

It's a terrible comic with bad art. The one reason I have still not watched the show is because I know how shit the source material was and hearing people kissing Homlander's ass calling him a new classic villain just makes me want to vomit.

In fairness, Homelander in the show is much more developed and fleshed out than he was in the comic. He's easily the best part about it, no question

The Boys comic actually made internal sense

The tv show is a schizophrenic mess where nothing characters do makes sense. Instead “messages” and “themes” are deemed more important than narrative coherence

    For example

    >writers mock people who don’t believe the mainstream media for being dumb
    >also, all mainstream media in the show is depicted as being owned by vought and lying about the truth

      Anonymous

damn, you actually nailed it. There is no internal logic in the show.

        Anonymous

I’ll point out another example. I actually checked how many different writers the show has and it’s basically a different writer every episode.

I honestly think that’s made the quality way worse because characters seem to forget what they did before. And story events immediately ignore the previous one because the new writer doesn’t want to deal with it

        >starlight exposes vought and homelander on livestream to millions at end of episode 6, is treated like a huge deal
        >next episode lazily waves it away in first minute by just saying fake news

        Or

        >starlight kills an innocent man in season 2 to steal his car. She justifies it to herself and butcher by saying she didn’t care because he pulled a gun… even though butcher pulled one first and they were trying to steal his car. What was he meant to do?

Obviously a writer just wanted a “frick gun owners” scene. They even had him say “this is a stand your ground state!” And decided it made sense for starlight. The bulletproof woman with super strength. To walk up to him and punch him to death instead of disarming him

        Now. In season 3

        >starlight shouts at Hughie for “teaming up with a murderer!” Meaning soldier boy and butcher
        >she says this, when she herself is a murderer. Hughie is a murderer. And starlight begged Hughie to find a way to murder homelander the previous episode

        It’s just nonsense

          >starlight exposes vought and homelander on livestream to millions at end of episode 6, is treated like a huge deal
          >next episode lazily waves it away in first minute by just saying fake news

So it's an accurate depiction of how the world works today.

          Anonymous

Another example of a character being moronic

          >starlight sees the Boys and soldier boy almost killing Homelander. Just needs to be held down for a few more seconds
          >decides not to help for some reason
          >claims soldier boy is just as bad as homelander so it doesn’t matter… even though soldier boy can be stopped with a fricking gas attack. Can’t fly. Doesn’t have super speed. And generally doesn’t have a way to destroy entire countries
          >immediately tries to expose homelander on a livestream when she has no way to stop him and believes he will go on a rampage if he loses popularity

It makes no sense. The shows idea of morality is nonsensical

Like how Hughie wanting powers to protect the person he loves is toxic masculinity. But Kimiko asks starlight ONCE for it for the same reason and immediately says yes

Maybe, just like in reality...everyone is wrong, but also right at the same time.

That life is more complex than black and white opinions but public life is too lazy to have in depth converstations.

We need less extremes from both sides and find balance.
