Bowling For Columbine
Passion of Joan of Arc

Based. So happy it finally got a proper Blu-ray release. Only movie I plan on picking up in July.
The 4K transfer for this one is fantastic.
Why do their blu rays cost 30-40 dollars each? They can't be that good, and even the best-looking blu-ray can't come close to a commercial 4K
Because 4K discs are extremely niche and occupy a minuscule percentage of the current physical media market share. The return on investment for a high quality 4K transfer and restoration simply isn't there.
can someone explain this to me? Is blu-ray losing relevance?
All physical media is losing to streaming.
All physical media is losing relevance. DVD is just the most resistant to the decline. This graph is a bit misleading, since it puts every bar at 100%. In truth, the total number of sales continues to decrease. It's just that DVD sales are decreasing slower than Blu-ray or UHD.
the rubes still buy dvds which is bullshit. they like like ass on 4k tvs and have fricked up frame rate.
>The return on investment for a high quality 4K transfer and restoration simply isn't there.
This is only true some of the time. When a film is digitally scanned, it's usually scanned at 4k or 8k, even if the physical release that results from the scan only ends up being a 1080p blu-ray. If you already have the 4k scan, may as well just put it on a 4k disc. We're just talking about plastic discs in a cheap plastic case, mass produced at scale. The per-unit manufacturing cost for these things must be absurdly low.
he was asking about Blu-Ray and not 4K
You can't talk about one without the other.
>Because 4K discs are extremely niche
>The return on investment for a high quality 4K transfer and restoration simply isn't there.
Isn't the whole point of their company to cater to a niche market in the first place?
>The return on investment for a high quality 4K transfer and restoration simply isn't there.
You only need to sell a couple thousand to make your money back. Companies like Vinegar Syndrome for make a killing only selling 2 or 3 thousand BDs.
Criterion has to acquire the rights for high-profile films, whereas Vinegar Syndrome can easily get a bunch of sleazy blaxploitation and porn flicks for dirt cheap.
Who cares when you can just pirate untouched Blu-Ray rips.
>even the best-looking blu-ray can't come close to a commercial 4K
what?
All the effort spent "remastering" a movie in 1080p when even the most basic 4K put out by Warner Brothers or Paramount is going to be leagues better by default. I thought Criterion's whole thing was getting the best fidelity.
You pay extra for the Armond White essays.
get some glasses or lasik
Buy them used or wait for a sale, $40 is a rip off
If you wait long enough, the true price of a Criterion disc is always 50% off.
They are 20 dollars, nobody buys them at full price. They have month long 50% off sales twice a year and several one day sales throughout the year
>even the best-looking blu-ray can't come close to a commercial 4K
What on earth are you on?
Convenience always wins in the end even if it's shit quality. Streaming will wipe out physical media eventually.
>Convenience always wins in the end even if it's shit quality. Streaming will wipe out physical media eventually.
Blu-ray and UHD will always survive as a niche collector's format, comparable to vinyl.
UHD will but I don't think standard blu-ray will survive
All I can hope is that blu-ray discs have longevity and aren't prone to fricking up like DVDs do in the long run. For how much I spend on certain blu-rays, I don't want to have to ever replace a blu-ray disc.
Beyond the Valley of the Dolls is my favorite movie thats been released by criterion but I dont really have a favorite criterion release regarding special features etc. Beyond the Valley of the Dolls didnt have any especially great criterion features that I recall which werent already previously released. Lots of examples like that. Fire Walk With Me old New Line dvd has a pretty awesome documentary that I assume criterion couldnt get the licensing to. Same with Weekend by Godard didnt come with the previously released commentary and as I recall consequently doesnt have any commentary at all. However I dont even remotely have anywhere near anything even slightly resembling a comprehensive knowledge of their releases so its not exactly saying much that I dont have a particular favorite.
Can someone fix the c so it isn't twisted?
I like the moody color better
too cinematic for me
same with Thief
the bottom looks like a fricking TV show
the top one looks like it's set in mexico
i love tv shows
you're moronic if you think the criterion is better, why is the film industry so scared of color these days?
color = cheap tv show
>putting films recently released in the collection
>troony garbage
Greatest movie ever.
Celine and Julie Go Boating
Il Sorpasso
Still Walking
La Collectionneuse
The Great Beauty
I'm inclined to agree
In my top 3.
It's a good thriller/mystery movie, but like all mystery films, it's only really good for one viewing
not Lynch mysteries
Based Fricking Anon
the Studio Canal blu is garbage; i hope Criterion gets it back one day
>the Studio Canal blu is garbage; i hope Criterion gets it back one day
The transfer on the StudioCanal is vastly superior, though the Criterion has the better extras. If it was the other way around, Criterion fanboys would be all smug, proclaiming that Criterion had yet again bested another distributor's transfer kek.
Youth Of The Beast
this should've been cut by about 20 mins
happy go lucky and meantime are better
Got pleb filtered hard by this
I NEED them to make a blu ray of Werckmeister Harmonies, The Devils and Nightwatching
Beastie Boys Video Anthology
I wish Criterion Channel would do surround sound. Even with newer movies, I haven't had any that were more than stereo
Streamgays always get cucked with lower bitrates and shitty compressed audio.
Even Netflix does 5.1 surround and sometimes Atmos too. Video quality is usually indistinguishable between stream and blu-ray but stereo and 5.1 is a very apparent difference.
>Video quality is usually indistinguishable between stream and blu-ray
Expected response, but it's true
Not shown: the compression artifacts you get from streaming. Any dark scene with a lot of black with inevitably look like shit on Netflix.
>Not shown
No shit, you don't see any difference
Because you're looking at a fricking jpeg of a still frame lmao
pure cope, but keep enjoying inferior image quality along with all those plastic discs and cases taking up space
you don't know shit about bitrates or compression
>inferior image quality
lol, you should learn about what bitrates are and how much quality you're missing out on when you're streaming programs compared to actually watching something on Blu-Ray or even DVD.
Blu-ray vs quality stream is virtually impossible to distinguish
the best blu-rays usually have a bitrate around 30mb/s, which is higher than the best 4k streams and triple 1080p streams
But indistinguishable in practice. Bitrate isn't everything. Compression techniques have made it obsolete.
>Compression techniques have made it obsolete.
not until it can show dark scenes, blacks, and running water without horrific banding or blocking
I've seen enough blu-rays that look like shit in night/indoor scenes to know that it is what it is and streaming isn't any worse
you're verifiably moronic
A cell phone from 2020 is more powerful than a computer from 1960 that takes up an entire room.
stop watching shit on your laptop moron
>uses a jpeg to show image quality differences
Wtf, why do companies frick with the source in the first place? When did this become acceptable?
you're blind and an idiot
rude
>Video quality is usually indistinguishable between stream and blu-ray
definitely not the case with game of thrones
>Video quality is usually indistinguishable between stream and blu-ray
Maybe on your laptop monitor mate.
they host their site using vimeo's ott platform which still doesn't support 5.1 audio
Zatoichi
the covers for the godzilla movies are cool
Only pretentious c**ts buy from this website
repo man
a seller on eBay is offering me Visconti's the Leopard for $10 plus shipping on DVD. Blu rays for the film currently run over $30 on eBay and Amazon. Should I go for the DVD or is this a film that must be watched in HD.
HD definitely because I firmly believe it's one of the most beautiful movies in the history of the world.
Depends on your setup, but it is one of the best shot films of all time imo
>a seller on eBay is offering me Visconti's the Leopard for $10 plus shipping on DVD. Blu rays for the film currently run over $30 on eBay and Amazon. Should I go for the DVD or is this a film that must be watched in HD.
If you get it you should get it on blu-ray as it's a lavishly photographed widescreen Film that will look like shit on DVD.
Also, the film has recently been restored in 4K, so I'd wait for a release of that superior restoration. Actually, there were even blu-rays around that looked better than the Criterion, e.g. the Australian release (now OOP). So definitely wait until a superior product is being released.
>What's you favorite film that this company has the home video rights for in North America?
odd question tbh
>soulless vs. SOVL
>Ghanessh
GOOD MORNING SIRS
Chimes at Midnight>Citizen Kane
I fricking loved Chimes at Midnight. Not as much as
though, what's some under-the-radar Welleskino.
Yeah but Welles is a slightly better director than Kezan
I love Elia Kazan.
F For Fake maybe?
If you're talking acting I like The VIPs(1963) a lot.
The gigantic zatoichi box set which i downloaded from Asian DVD Club before they got taken down.
My stuff has been boxed up for about half a year now. I don’t even remember most of what I own anymore. Their box sets are great though.
I like my Bruce Lee box.
Chungking Express for me.
/tv/s favorite kino of course
