Whats your media player of choice for watching movies on the computer?

Obviously that’s not the ideal viewing method, but it still is an interesting conversation worth having

MPCHC default is just a wrapper over windows media player. It's literally garbage lmao.

That's not even remotely true. MPC does not use WMP as a backend. The name just comes from it being designed to be a modern player that mimicked the look-and-feel of WMP 6.4 and earlier.

Original MPC did use the default Windows DirectShow filters (which are also used by WMP, but are distinct from it) unless ffdshow was installed as an alternative. That is not true of either MPC-HC or MPC-BE. Later versions of MPC-HC include and use the LAV filters (forked from ffdshow) by default.

        >muh mpc-hc
even the developers say to get something else on their homepage

After that was posted, the project was forked (as has happened several times before in the history of MPC), and that fork is still actively developed. It's mostly just bug fixes and maintenance to keep the filters up to date, and they're not taking feature requests, but it still gets regular updates.

The website was never updated since the current devs don't have access to it.

Another fork, MPC-BE, is actively developed with new feature updates.

That said, most of the hate on Cinemaphile for VLC is a relic from 10-15 years ago, when it had a bad reputation in the anime community, due initially, IIRC, to issues with subtitle handling and MKV support. Later on it was slow to support Hi10P, of which certain highly-influential fansubbers were early-adopters. The recommended alternative throughout the late-00s and early '10s was the Combined Community Codec Pack (CCCP), which bundled a custom build of MPC-HC with Haali Media Splitter, the LAV filters, and VSFilter/DirectVobSub. So popular was the CCCP that the MPC-HC devs eventually incorporated the filters into the default installation. Later on, MPC-HC + MadVR became the standard recommendation for those who had a capable GPU, and that combination performed markedly better than VLC.

Started using K-Lite because of this thread, was using VLC before. It's no joke how much better this shit looks. VLC was fine but wow it made my shows just sparkle.

            >K-Lite
I used that back before the days of CCCP, but until this thread, I didn't know it still existed. Codec packs seem kind of pointless these days, when QuickTime and RealPlayer are deader than disco and most players) have native support for all of the common formats. CCCP stopped development for a reason: all of the important bits got incorporated directly into MPC-HC.

Still exists and as far as I know still the only option for autists that still gets updated. MPC-HC's site even says go get something else.

                >MPC-HC's site even says go get something else.
That site is old and misleading. The original devs abandoned the project, but it was subsequently forked and is still getting regular updates (indeed, there was a new update just yesterday). The current lead dev has no control over the mpc-hc.org domain, so it has never been updated.

The current version (2.1.3) can be found on github here:
                https://github.com/clsid2/mpc-hc

The main limitation of the current official version is lack of native HDR support. For that you need to install either MadVR or MPC Video Renderer (which comes from MPC-BE). K-Lite bundles both of those renderers with MPC-HC. MadVR hasn't been updated in five years, so you don't really need K-Lite to keep it up-to-date. MPC VR is updated more frequently, but still less frequently then MPC-HC itself. Most of the other stuff in K-Lite is redundant since it's already in the official version of MPC-HC at this point.

There's literally no difference between the two in modern PCs. Stop your decade-old slander grandpa.

All you need is MPC-HC, MadVR and xysubfilter, and you can use ffdshow audio instead of LAV if you like for advanced audio features like virtual surround for headphones, Winamp plugin support, etc.
Set MadVR chroma upscaling to NNEDI3 64 neurons, image upscaling to Jinc, and under remove artifacts, set debanding to high if watching yts. Turn on smooth motion. If this shit is too slow switch NNEDI3 to super-xbr, sharpness 100 for chroma upscaling. Doubling/quadrupling luma/chroma resolution with super-xbr or NNEDI3 can help a lot for upscaling if your computer is fast enough.

When? The founder talks openly about mistakes they've made but they're very rigorous now when it comes to security and contributors.

That's true, it'll definitely just werk in 99% of cases, I was mainly talking from a quality perspective. mpv is the most cutting edge video player in that regard but that also means it can often have changes that require changing your config for the same functionality. MPC-HC and madvr aren't as configurable but will get you 90% of the way there without you having to stay abreast of changes.

Webm, yeah, SWF I can't seem to use anymore, they used to have a flash.dll that worked but that seemed to have gotten nuked and can't find a workaround for that anymore. But webms work fine, music player it works fine for me.

homie u wot. Just download the standalone Flash player from the official website. They even had playerglobal32_0.swc last time I've checked (years ago, to be fair).

When you clicky movie on the computer, movie play. Movie can be played by many different apps. On computer the app is called a media player. So OP is asking which movie player app media player you use. There are many: MPC-HC, VLC, Windows Media Player, KMPlayer, mpv, Irfanview, iTunes. Which one opens when you double clicky movie?

Oh, you mean playing SWFs inside IV. I guess your only option is writing a plugin yourself. Can't see why you'd want that, however. Dedicated flash player is not only more stable but also doesn't have extra hotkeys that can accidentally frick things up.

potplayer is the best one. sorry mpvgays.
easiest to use and fully functional with lots of options.
maybe mpv is good after you spend a long time configuring it, but potplayer is perfect so whatever.

VLC is a nifty little tool I use for network streaming which is what it was originally built for anyway.

For local media playback though I use MPC-HC, I have no reason to ever stop using it because it's always worked for the last 12+ years.

              Anonymous

Also one more point, if you're going to use hardware decoding make sure your hardware can actually support the formats you want decoded. I would recommend software decoding everything provided your PC is powerful enough.

            Anonymous

Why would you even need codecs in the year 2023 of our Lord? You can just download the forked player.

              Anonymous

It doesn't really include codecs anymore, that's just its legacy name. It just puts your media playback system in one palette that can be easily configured and updated.

Should I use madVR as my video renderer or should I just use defaults in my install?

Depends on your hardware and preferences. If you have a dedicated, powerful GPU give it a shot. Otherwise the defaults will look like 90% as good in motion for modern files.
