they decided to take a book series that was a boy's coming of age story, make him a side character, and focus it on a catty old woman mage character instead

Wheel of Time universe is one that has an extremely rigid male/female split in its culture, society and even its natural forces. Kind of Yin/Yang thing. You can imagine how this notion was something Hollyweird couldn't just leave unfricked with.

But if they had actually read the books they would know that the whole series is about wrong those are who adhere to the strict division. Working together is truly the only way to actually solve problems. The characters all learn this in a variety of ways, some of them extremely important.

              Anonymous

The series never says that men and women are equivalent. It says that men and women are incomplete without each other and cannot be happy without each other. But they are NOT the same and the great evil of the series was unleashed by an attempt to make them equal by tapping into a unisex power.

              Anonymous

anon that's exactly why they're diverging from the books as hard as possible. can't have a show having men and women both embracing their differences and then learning to work together! we need the masses nice and divided and embroiled in their moronic culture wars.

They read and understood the books just fine, it's the reason they've gone about systematically destroying every facet of them. hell I suspect a few of the more self aware ones might have even have a brief moment of realization they're the real world equivelant of darkfriends before going back to their conditioned mindset.

Dude look a "The Expanse" the fricking books are already super progressive and 'pozed' by most people standards here. And even those got fricked with by Hollywood because it apparently wasn't fricking progressive enough.

Hollywood is incapable of making a faithful adaptation of ANYTHING even when the original material already aligns with their beliefs

its funny because there's huge streaks of feminism and empowerment of women and shit thru the whole series but it's just like 70's feminism and also has male empowerment so it had to go to the chopping block for this bland shit.

The books did a good job of never making the Aes Sedai get completely unbearable. There's always a character calling them out on their shit or karma hitting them in the arse when it gets too bad.

The "funny" side story of Mat getting repeatedly raped for months on end will always be weird though.

mat being led on by a woman is pure comedy thanks to his character and opinions on women.
It also really shows his character when he gripes endlessly about her but genuinely regrets her death.

i remember that scene, it wasn't particularly fair for you to react that way.

These women weren't tumblr bawds reposting some cringy slam poetry quote, they were well portrayed medieval women in an age of steel world, hearing Matt talking like an abused maid, the situation was completely insane to them and considering that all the girls exposed to this scene of him, were very dissapproving of his behaviour and attitude towards them and women in the past, it was quite rightly the funniest thing they've ever heard in their lives.

They even admitted it was wrong to laugh at him over it and were embarrassed about finding it soo funny. Don't be too hard on them incel.

yes, women have no idea how to console men who aren't their children and have little ability to relate to them, this isn't suprising to me, its part of why RJ is one of the truly great writers, he nails male and female personalities to a T, even the negative aspects that drive you insane to see.
It just makes them women, not vindictive monsters.

the drastic flooding of a male body with estrogen that didn't actually come from a human female tends to REALLY frick with your organs, brain and bones long term. You realise that males and females need a steady supply of testosterone to have their brain function correctly right? and when you flood your body with 100x the natural dose of the wrong hormone, on a regular basis, your hormone levels fly off the handle.

Not to mention the chemical castrating of small children, the damage being done to their bodies can never be fixed. Their lives are over once that happens.

Most of the problem with 9/10 is the editing. If 10 was trimmed down heavily and integrated and reordered with 9, it would be okay. They spend WAY too much time on Elayane's "But Im the queen of camelyn because I say so" plot.

The fact that Brandon "only unfun hard magic systems allowed" Sanderson was chosen to finish the series made me lose what little interest I ever had in trying again.

yeah book 7 is mid but book 8 to 10 is unfiltered garbage, I can't get past Crossroad of Twilight no matter how much people tell me book 11 picks up

The problem with books 9 and 10 are the editing. Those 2 books cover the same three days from all the different perspectives. Somehow ALL of the good stuff ended up in book 9 which just left book 10 to be almost all filler material, and it really suffered because of it. Yes, book 11 picks up a lot, one of the better scenes in all the books is in 11. I also have a soft sport for book 9 because the cleansing is my favorite scene in the whole series.

There are characters like that in the Wheel of Time (books) but Cadsuane is specifically and deliberately not one of them. The point of Cadsuane is to be an example of an old woman who doesn't respect men and needs a man's correction.

The worst character is Egwene and its not even close. What you need to understand about Cadsuane is that she is super old. She is facing the apocalypse and thinks she is the only person who understands what needs to happen. Because of that, she takes matters into her own hands to see that what is necessary happens. She is doing what she thinks is best, but her view is flawed. She isnt aware of it being flawed due to Aes Sedai arrogance, which is was even stronger during her younger years.

I had a moment in the 7th or 8th book. Shortly after Traitorious Ruseman shows up with the male Aes Sedai school and Rand got kidnapped like a moron where I said. "I'm not enjoying this, and I haven't been enjoying it for at least 3 books." And just dropped it in the middle of a chapter. Maybe when that one Aes Sedai force bound Rand and he didn't instantly execute him? Somewhere around there.

I ended up hating most of Perrin's story after the stone of tear falling. They seem to forget about him for a few books too while he's sat back in the two rivers being a reluctant lord, until they bring him back. Egwayne becoming armalin during the white tower civil war is also pretty painful and that drags on from book 5 to the end. Reminds me of GoT where you hit certain chapters with certain characters and you just roll your eyes because you have to slog through those to get back to stuff you find interesting

matt was a surprisingly fun character despite how when I hear him described he sounds like a "my OC donut steal" deviant art tier character with his magic raven scythe spear, one eye, magic repelling medallion, neck hanging scar and wide brimmed hat. I watched the first episode of WoT and they did him and his family so dirty with him being a broke thief with his dad being an abusive drunk when he was just some cheeky scamp in the books

It's sort of bad storytelling but the main bit of Perrin's real power and reign is being set up as King and foil to Elayne in the new world after the final battle. It's important that he spent years learning how to lord just not terribly exciting reading.

the books go hard on making the women sexual because they as characters want to be, choosing to wear low cut dresses out of choice and saying what they'd do with their partners behind closed doors, for the most part they still keep to being modest in front of one another but I remember multiple tal'i'ranreod scenes of their clothes changing and how different parts of the world had scandalous fashion when they first arrived then as they stayed they took on the dress wear of those nations and enjoyed doing so. No doubt the amazon executives and show runners wanted to de-sex the entire thing anyway out of the dreaded male gaze.

The thing is, the Wheel of Time books are very feminist, but it's not the most modern sort of feminism. Women are powerful, but not powerful like men. They're powerful in a different sort of way that compliments the power of men without being literally equivalent to men.

the books also go to great lengths to show that the superiority complex that can be, and certainly is today, associated with feminism is absolutely moronic. The characters that stick to that view point are the dumbest in the books and meet some of the worst fates because of theirs hubris.

          >Wheel of Time books are very feminist
agreed but they at least show there are holes to the idea, multiple times the main women have to be saved by Matt and Tom because they thought they could do everything themselves with the power. The reader can see this but the women almost always without fault believe they were fine without them, they apologize once or twice for getting themselves into that predicament, but it is almost entirely forgotten about a book later where the men have to do the same thing again and they return to calling them fools until they are saved once more. Modern feminist narratives could never admit they would need saving and they'd always succeed on their own.

            Anonymous

There are also times when the men get into trouble and need a woman to help them. The overarching moral is that men and women aren't the same, but they need each other to cover for each other's weaknesses.

        >multiple tal'i'ranreod scenes of their clothes changing and how different parts of the world had scandalous fashion when they first arrived then as they stayed they took on the dress wear of those nations and enjoyed doing so
Specifically this occurs in Ebou Dar. There is a tradition of marriage knives, where a woman has a knife when she is married that she wears in a necklace. It will have a number of gems in it to show how many children she has.

When Nynaeve and Elayne go to TAR they show up wearing marriage knives, because they are thinking of Lan and Rand respectively.

Nynaeve has about ten or eleven stones in her knife. Elayne, meanwhile, has one so completely encrusted by literally scores of gemstones that you cannot even see the knife. One has to admire her dedication to wanting to spend the rest of her life on her back as a baby factory for Rand.

I was trying to reply to the one in /misc/ but it got pruned so here I am.
In season 1, they intentionally snubbed the main characters story so they could pretend a girl boss was the chosen one. They ruined the character of Matt Cauthon, my favorite character mind you. They made Loial look dumb. They fricked up the magic system. They made up a gay character so they could waste an episode on sad homosexualry. They made Lan, the posterboy for stoicism, a crybaby. This is a man who will willingly ride toward certain doom expecting to take a hell of a lot of his enemies down with him. The big battle toward the end really fricked with the lore in detrimental ways that I doubt they can unfrick now. You can't unfrick it once it's fricked. It's fricked.

If you are talking about Ishamel, thats at the end of book 3. Book 4 is where the stories continues, but is pretty dope for its own reasons. I think Jordan did intend to write a trilogy at first, and it certainly comes across that way. But I think the publisher point out how much money they were making, so he decided to write more.

            Anonymous

The way I see it, Jordan wasn't certain of more books after the first, so the first stands by itself. After the second was greenlit he figured he'd also get a third, so the first three books also stand by themselves as a trilogy. After that, he commits to the full series.

The purge of Aes Sedai just as Moraine and Siuan are being raised to Aes Sedai. The one that never happened technically. I always took that as a hallmark for the black ajah having control. But argueably going back hundreds of years, question of how much Ishy got done in like 40 years every 1000 (plus random darkfriends).

To be fair, the powers actually work like that. The male method simply wouldn't work for women. Also the tower has a recruitment flaw (meaning they can't just go lol you stilled yourself) and have been taught wrong on purpose.

men and women are different and use different kinds of magic, so of course they learn differently too. this is why the show fricks things up so bad by making the power unisex.

Considering that the source material is so female-centric for huge stretches, I find it almost comical that the people making the show still felt like they had to fix the patriarchy by undermining all the male characters. They just can't stop self-sabotaging.

the oaths are meant to stop them from doing that, have they really abandoned the oaths in the series? why even have warders at that point

Someone with such an extensive library with like 4 books worth in it is not someone you should treat with respect. Reading some fantasy is fine but you are supposed to evolve into actual literature at least for SOME of your free time

As usual - they had a good material and then butchered it because because.
I don't even get why would they do it since it isn't "problematic" in any way from the point of view of a Twitter schizo.

I tried to watch it yesterday, but it was unbearable.

    >fricked up casting with, as an example, Two Rivers being Manhattan in terms of racial diversity and thus all locations feelings the same since it's just "population of coastal burgeroid megalopolis in shitty wannabe fantasy clothes" in every village. I've yet to see Tony Soprano, THOUGH.
    >fricked up plot where 2/3 of the first book with Chekhov's guns about magic, world building, character introductions happen
    >shitty decorations made out of styrofoam
    >shitty costumes which couldn't be made in world because they are impractical

Also, they've made ogre dude bearded. The frick. He's supposed to be littleaged peckfrick of ~20, not some equivalent of a 30yo. Literally every time he sayss something in the book it's said that he's young.

      >they've made ogre dude bearded. The frick. Literally every time he sayss something in the book it's said that he's young
he's meant to be young for an ogier who live for ages but the book says he has mustaches over and over so I'd say having a beard or facial hair would be fine. Can't remember the book ever saying if he did or didn't but it would be the least of crimes the adaptation has made

I always imagined him as having some kind of virgin stubble on the upper lip which is barely noticable, but I war seading books while riding to work, so I didn't really think on what I've read.
