It's funny how back in the 70s and 80s angels were seen as a guiding force that spreads love and encouragement to give people the strength to keep going. Now they're seen as manipulative and controlling, forcing people to conform to the traditional systems in an uncaring world.
In a way, angels can be seen as representative of capitalism more than of religion.
I wouldn't say this is funny, more sad. It shows at one time people were far more willing to believe if not in a higher power, then in the good of existence and the idea that tomorrow might be a better, brighter day. Now people are so focused on themselves that any thought of an outside power influencing them, even if it is benevolent and has their best wishes at hear, is seen as evil.

These things are all cyclical. If you've read Journey to the West in that the Heavens/Gods/Angels are portrayed as incredibly bureaucratic and stifling which was likely what China was like in the period it was written.
Peoples view of political or cultural authority at any point in history is going to be reflected in the portrayal of supernatural authority figures like gods or angels. If there's a period of immense growth and positive opportunity within the society then it's probably going to be reflected in fiction. I'm thinking about my game now because I have Angels in it, they're portrayed a force that purposely does not intervene, intentionally waits and speculates until chaos runs rampant and only then smites with overwhelming force until order is restored.

Never, even if it was a show that was genuinely trying to portray Christianity in a good light or maybe admitting and talked about how historical and modern organised religion isn't flawless and has issues but that the messages the Bible preached were still good, Christians would still rip it to fricking shreds because it wasn't sterile enough or preached the correct denomination of the Bible based on what sect is being followed. Granted you'll have a show like VeggieTales which is extremely intelligent and knows its shit and how to correctly approach the subject matter, but anything else taking a scrutinized look at the Bible would immediately be considered heresy and something only a theologian should be able to do. I don't understand why mainstream media cares, the way to have discourse and discussion is to have both approving and dissenting voices. I mean there is an entire school of thought around Angelology. I feel like Zag would be less hands-on than Gabby in helping, due to both the medium and his personality. Instead of speaking directly to the viewer, I could see him 'shift' plots to a relevant issue, and 'let them figure it out on their own'.
It's kinda funny imagining Zag trying really hard to portray something relevant to the situation while being subtle, and as the target continues to not get it he breaks character more and more out of irritation and his genuine desire for the kid to see clearly, but never actually addresses the 4th wall.
From what I've seen and read, Zag would be the one to reach for the flaming sword faster than Gabby, who finally drew hers in a last resort "do-or-he-dies" situation.

Yeah, I like to imagine it's less of "they can't appear outside of the screen" and more that appearing as cartoons is more discreet and low-profile.
Additionally, the impression I got with the series is that Gabby tries to play it safe at first, giving Jonah advice and ways to cope with his situation rather getting involved, still trying to play her role like she did from other stories on the official site. But as Jonah's dad kept getting more and more aggressive, she had to get a little more hands-on, instructing Jonah to do stuff in the real world and breaking away from the show more often. Then the 4th tape comes along and she's clearly fed up and prepared to do some shit.
TLDR its dumb speculation on my part but I feel like Gabby just uses cartoons so she can help people without necessarily blowing her cover, she could probably blip down if she needed.
