Treat it like SouthPark you'll just be able to tell. It loses its identity and while some episodes are alright, the show as a whole lost its spirit.

And while there was worse episode, waiting for big moe and the escape room episode are somehow worse than the dance. I don't even know how to explain it. It's just the true death of what the show was.

Then you've still got episodes like time's up for the gang and dee day which are good. They're just outliers.

        >loses its identity
That's not why it got bad, though
It changes noticeably even within the earlier seasons, bringing DeVito in really altered the chemistry and it took them a while to figure out how to rebalance
It's all still good though (until it stopped being good)

The gay dance scene is when it officially is dead. People who LARP as being more high-brow than they actually are will defend it for ego wanking reasons, but nobody who isn't a complete moron will defend it.

this. seasons 1-11 are great, 12 starts the decline but isn't terrible, 13 and onward are more bad than good but still have some okay episodes. this last season was better than 13-15 at least

What are the bad episodes in the early seasons?

        Anonymous

personal preference of course but franks's brother, the gang cracks the liberty bell, dennis reynolds - an erotic life (half of it is alright but the rob thomas and sinbad cameos/plot are dogshit), the gang gets stranded in the woods, high school reunion
having said that, they are bad episodes in the context of those seasons and would be better than average in later seasons

          Anonymous

stranded in the woods is one of my favourites but all the rest I'd generally agree with

    >When does it get bad?

Season 12 is where it probably should have ended. Its not as good as season 11 was and the finale has all the characters resolve a lot of their problems and move on and it would have been a logical place to end things. Season 13 is probably the worst season and the finale is this ridiculous jump the shark moment were Rob McElhenney goes up his own ass to try and impress woke Hollywood. Season 14 isn't much better and by the end of it I thought the show needed to end. That said season 15 was a definite improvement over 13 and 14 and the Ireland episodes are pretty watchable. The most recent season 16 was actually pretty solid throughout and the finale was the best episode they've done since season 11.

So there you go. I'm still watching it with the understanding that its past its prime but can still deliver from time to time. If you want to stop before it starts going downhill end it at season 11 episode 5 "Mac and Dennis Move to the Suburbs" but if you stop there you'll be missing out on some really great episodes as well as some absolute trash.

Mostly this. Subjectively, I walked away from S16 only feeling attachment to “Frank vs Russia” and “The Gang Goes Bowling”, but aside from gripes with Mac’s continued (pointless and misguided) existence, it was decent television. S13 is probably still the worst, overall, and even that has “Time’s Up for The Gang” and “The Gang Gets New Wheels” trying to redeem an otherwise unwatchable season.

The thing that gets on my nerves the most in nuSunny is the over reliance on explaining why the characters are bad people. It undercuts the writing / joke more often than not, and it runs counter to who we know the characters to be when one of them is always forced to be a halfhearted voice of reason, unless we’re to believe they are hypocritical about literally every topic. It’s a role that Mac used to fulfill when his character made more sense. With other characters, “the moral highground” voice of reason has only ever worked when they are using it as an attack on another member of the gang for being stupid.

It peaks in season 9 and then goes right off a cliff. Really impressive. You'll know for sure once Dee and Mac get bogged.

Maybe it's just a mix of everything. I watched it from '06 to '13 or '14 and gave up on the Scott Bakula episode and at some point it was crass, vulgar, high energy about a group of loathsome people trying and fricking up because crabs in a bucket. At some point they started getting meta, making references to this being a show, more episodes where they keep poking fun at how their lives are a sitcom and all around the world just got crazier. I guess that you can't bring 2006 energy into 2023 any more, living like trash people, gigs, scams...it is just too real now. For example, I remember in '12 that I started seeing old guys rummaging through the trash. Not hobos or gypsies, just old people, well dressed, in latex gloves looking around seeing if they could get something to make ends meet. It's been 10 years and now they do it like an every day routine. Hell I gave a one a tip once for a haul and he still greets me everytime I see him.

      >about a group of loathsome people trying and fricking up because crabs in a bucket.
      >At some point they started getting meta,
      this is the problem
rob hated that the audience likes their characters so now they are still loathsome people but now they have to have a little discussion for the audience's benefit about how they are loathsome and shouldn't be doing it, before they do it

I sometimes would skip the cricket episodes because I knew he would end up 10 times worse than how he came. But I fear that now they would insert some quip about "how is he still alive" or "are we the baddies"?
It's just fricking stupid, Danny DeVito is pushing 80 and could live off royalties by now just let the little midget rest.

9 is the last consistently good season where every episode feels like Sunny, 10 mostly feels fine but the Family Feud episode is a real harbinger of the soulless tone that's up ahead, 11 continues the unpleasant trend by becoming too self-referntial (Chardee McDennis 2, all the callback jokes in the finale, etc.) though it has a good episode in Mac and Dennis Move to the Suburbs. Then 12 onwards is just completely soulless.

Slight drop in consistency every few seasons, but 12 is the first time the bad episodes out number the good.
I still watch it because even in bad seasons there can be a pretty good episode hidden in there.

Season 12 onwards you can feel it sinking. I think S10 is the real cut-off but I've mentioned S11 and 12 because they still have some great episodes. I honestly think by around S8-10 the fame changed them, especially when Rob roids up, and Kaitlyn starts getting bogged. Charlie is the only one that truly kept in character all the time.
