The JSA has been built on this since the 70s and 80s. Usually the less page time the character getting the family gets, the less bullshit it is. eg Al Pratt, Iron Munro, and Sandra Knight getting a son in Walter Pratt (and thus a granddaughter in Katehunter) wasn’t an asspull because those 3 barely appeared in a span of 20-30 years, with their younger selves not explored in depth since the decade of their creation.
This always felt like a cheap attempt to secure royalties by tying them to a prominent character.

In the court system it's called 'assumed paternity'. If you're married and she cheats, the child is by default, yours. And married or not you usually have a year or less to get the paternity investigated and contested. Any contributions to the child or mother during this is assumed paternity. Depending on where you are in burgerland, DNA testing is still not proof enough, and in France and Germany it is illegal without the mother's consent.

Creating a long lost family member is a coin toss, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The trick that never works is taking existing characters and retconning them into being related.
