I think the point at the end is he always was Heisenberg. His wounded pride and insecurity had festered for decades. That's why he said he did it for himself in the end, it wasn't him acting against his nature or being transformed, it was exactly what felt right to who he was at his core.

Heisenberg wasn't a different persona, it was just Walt uninhibited.

      stop being reasonable

      Anonymous

Was Skyler unreasonable? I'm sorry if this comes off as bait but I'm at least somewhat autistic and genuinely can't tell.

On the one hand, he endangered her and the family completely against their consent. But on the other hand, he'd been working two jobs to support them for decades; the first one involved dealing with a bunch of high schoolers, and the second one being belittled by those same high schoolers plus an butthole boss. And It's been a while since I watched the series but at the outset she's just an annoying b***h that's addicted to eBay auctions who spares a sad handjob for his birthday. And she goes all Columbo on him early on because she suspects he's - God forbid - smoking pot to alleviate his pains dealing with fricking cancer.

Turning down the funding from his ex partner was kind of petty but I can only imagine the state of his mind getting that offer from someone he feels fricked his life over along with the knowledge that he's probably going to die soon without accomplishing anything. Skyler can't pretend to understand what it feels like to see your own expiration date knowing you haven't done much of anything with your life. And I'd understand if she just wanted to just distance herself from all of it, but she fricked Ted, gave him all that crawlspace money Walt made himself, couldn't stop herself from walking into the pool and making a scene in front of everyone, and overall being more of an obstacle than she had to be despite her helping with the car wash money laundering. I don't need everything I mentioned to be addressed, but I just don't fully sympathize with her and don't see myself being that much of a b***h in her position and I'd like to understand how I am wrong.

I'd say some things she did were unreasonable, but on the whole, no. Context matters.

Walt alone choosing to put their family in constant legal and lethal danger while making it clear she has no say in the situation, and she and their kids aren't allowed to leave, and every attempt she makes at trying to crawl out from under the constant pressure is met with a mountain of lies and gaslighting and manipulation... there's a reason she does unreasonable things.

Like when she steps into the pool and half-heartedly tries to kill herself. It is a desperate attempt to have any kind of agency over herself, even if that comes in the form of self destruction. And it's no coincidence that Walt is the one to jump in after herl and drag her back.

Thank you for taking the time to reply anon, honestly after typing all of that out I looked back on it and gave more credence to the fact that she'd tried to get away multiple times with all of them being futile. Then for a good portion of the series her own son is idolizing this guy who's putting them all in danger and she's not allowed to tell anybody, plus she just had a fricking baby. She also has to partake in the gaslighting/lying to her own sister.

Didn't even think about Walt playing hero and ironically being the one to yoink her out of the pool, kek

He wanted to make his own money to provide for his family as he died. Wanted to feel like it was something he actually gave to them not people he despised gave to them. Btw, I'm not saying he's a good guy or anything.

Bottom line is that his pride drove him to turn to crime and synthesize the ultimate meth with his superior chemistry knowledge. I don't think he always did it for fun, but he definitely did by the end.
Probably about the time he bombed Tuco's.

Truly this is the moment Heisenberg became Walter White…

  15. 11 months ago

It's less of point in time, than a probabilistic wavefunction. So we're really talking about where he is most likely to have become Heisenberg, but it's unknowable if he actually did or somewhere else. There's a very small chance he was Heisenberg right from the start, or wasn't truly Heisenberg until the very end. Most likely it was somewhere in the middle though.
