Mike Mattei knew about video games and created most of the classic episodes. James Rolfe had the charisma to show on the camera. Both of them worked as a team. Matei was the best person to produce the show in the background.

I recall seeing update videos throughout the years saying he intends to focus on doing horror kino but I haven't yet seen that come to anything. perhaps he's deluded into thinking he can do it himself when he obv needs to work with a studio or wtv and will never get another opportunity like he did at his peak with the nerd movie
He is clearly not intelligent enough to be a real filmmaker and everyone realized that over a decade ago. I hope he still doesn't think he'll make it, I assume he gave up and went along being the nerd the rest of his life
It all went wrong when James wife put him on a schedule that barely includes working. His old friends like Kyle and Mike left because he never has time to do anything because of her horrible schedule she sticks him on.
In his book he said that she gives him ultimatums. So she has him do all her menial tasks like do her dishes or whatever she wants instead of giving him the freedom to be creative and work. Which is something he used to have and she took away from him.
James isn't a young dude super passionate about his new breakaway success of a series anymore.
He is a dad who has to make these videos regularly for a job.
He has less free time, less passion, and much of his material has already been done, all of the things he was genuinely passionate about as a kid - he's talked about.
I don't blame him for this, nor do I blame the Screenwave people, this is just the inevitable outcome of the series dragging on soon to it's third decade (first episode was almost 20 years ago now)
Some of his new videos are good, most are alright. I mean, what more can we ask for?

No one thought AVGN would still be going by fricking 2024, and even if it did, we all thought it wouldn't be great. This is no shocker.
To be fair to james, it would be impossible to still be making good avgn content consistently after +15 years. Where he went wrong was not keeping up with non-avgn content and lower effort stuff like james and mike mondays. Avgn is one of those things that he should just do when he's inspired, but all that other stuff got canned.
