Why does it look so much faker than Fury Road? It's all filmed on location with CGI added like Fury Road isn't it?

      Anonymous

Jesus. Talk about a visual downgrade from Fury Road

why is the CGI so bad

This is what I don't understand. It looks awful. I understand it's still six months away so there's more work to do in post but it looks like a video game. Everything looks fake. Did they even use real cars this time around or did they just CGI everything? Is this George Miller's LOTR to Hobbit moment where he's just phoning it all in n a green screen stage?

        >understand it's still six months away so there's more work to do in post but it looks like a video game.
I'll tell you this. Every time a big budget movie trailer comes out and the CGI looks shit people always say "there's still a lot of time, the end product will be better" and 9/10 times it still looks shit in the final film. Large swathes of this trailer looked bad. So unless they re-shoot it from scratch or spend hundreds of millions more, it won't look better.

          Anonymous

Yeah, it's just me trying to rationalise it because I genuinely don't understand how there can be such a significant visual downgrade in a film by presumably much of the same production team, with the same director, with a larger budget made almost ten years later.

            Anonymous

Do we know if it has a higher budget? Fury Road was made for 185 million(155 million on lower estimates). The film was technically a flop in theaters because of the high budget. I wouldn't be surprised if they reduced the budget for this.

              Anonymous

Yeah, because of local tax incentives the budget has been released.

It's basically ensuring Mad Max: The Wasteland never gets made because I can't see any way this ends up making more than Fury Road did. It might genuinely end up good, despite looking like shit, but it's not going to make more money.

I don't know why people forget that making money after a theatrical run is a thing

Tons of movies have gotten sequels because they do well after they leave theaters

Physical media is dead. Profits after a theatrical run a basically non existent these days. Netflix pays $2 million for streaming rights and the movie pops off on their platform? The studio is not seeing an extra dime for it's popularity.

You only want to produce maybe one flop or so every financial year for tax purposes. When everything you produce is a flop it's due to incompetence.

In the years since the first one basically all FX houses on the planet have been ground into fine paste by everything using copious CG and stuff like capeshit working them to death because their stuff is horribly planned
Also the first ones reveal trailers had straight up unfinished scenes in them

Obviously i'm gonna judge the finished movie when it's out, but i doubt they can get rid of all that horrible "green screen" look, especially since it impacts shots framing and composition, something you don't just fix in post.

fury road was in the works for DECADES. miller wrote it in the 80ies, the first attempt to make it was in the 90ies and then he almost filmed it several more times. it was clearly a passion project where every shot was perfected. this flick, in comparison is an afterthought. he wanted to have the japanese do it as an anime and was somehow talked into doing it as live action himself. no wonder it shows.

I just learned that buccal fat removal is permanent. The fat doesn't come back. I have no idea why a surgery so horrible even exists, or why some think it's worthwhile. At least we know it's unpopular, being one of the least performed cosmetic surgeries despite its low cost.

Because it accentuates the cheek bones and make them look aristocratic and part of the upper societies. You wouldn't get it, because you're a lowborn profane. The aesthetic appreciation of the elites are so far beyond your lowly, baser preferences that it would be a waste of time trying to make you understand them beyond this.

You are not a part of their world and mindset. That's all you need to know.

Max was good even in a small role in Fury Road. Once he got involved in the action, he was like the MVP of the movie. Even him being a Co protagonist wasn't bad, because Furiosa worked well with him, and they avoided the cliche romance story.

Fury Road had some goofy CGI but it was used very sparingly and kind of fit the look of the movie. This just looks bad all the time. FR is known as a masterpiece of practical film-making so this trailer is extremely disappointing. It's literally like going from LotR to The Hobbit.

There are absolutely 0 stakes in prequels?
Is Furiosa going to live? Yes we saw her in the future in Fury Road. The white haired dude is also going to live we see him as well.
Prequels are just a dumb idea it removes any suspense from the movie because we ABSOLUTELY KNOW who lives and who doesn't.

        Anonymous

I don't entirely agree on that. I think prequels can work when they show who these characters used to be, a change or character development could be a very enticing thing to witness if not more so than death of characters. For example, not entirely accurate so feel free to call me out on false equivalence, but I often get confused looks when I say in One Piece's Enies Lobby my favorite part of the story wasn't Robin screaming she wants to live, it was Ohara Devils flashback episodes in themselves. The entire story gets interrupted to show us Robin's childhood for 2 episodes, we see her being wide-eyed child, we see what she went through, we don't need to see exactly how she met Crocodile, but the flashback conveys perfectly to us how child Robin who was imitating Saul's goofy laugh when she was panicking grew up to be woman who ended up working for Crocodile. She was a different person and we see the exact circumstances that gave us idea of how that girl ended up being Nico Robin and Robin had to remember Saul's last words that no one is born to be alone in this world to be able to tell Luffy she wants to live. I think there's a lot of merit to those kinds of stories set in the past and I was honestly in awe when I saw Robin's flashbacks, because Oda managed to tell a story (of Ohara island destruction) within the already good story (Enies Lobby) that only added to the story more.

However, it's all ogre if Anya Taylor Joy is literally just larping as Charlize Theron.

It also sold a lot of dvds/blue rays and had a lot of rentals after its theatrical run because it was nominated for several academy awards and was pritty much hailed as an action masterpiece

Absolutely none of that contradicts the fact that it had a huge budget and had underwhelming box office returns.

This reminds me of Solo. You want to see how Furiosa got her arm? How she got her facepaint? How she got her haircut? How she got her job? How she got her driver's license? How she met Chewbacca? No, the character stood fine on her own. A prosthetic limb is enough storytelling in and of itself - we don't need to see were it came from. Shit even the title "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" sounds exactly like "Solo: A Star Wars Story"

Is the increase in CGI maybe an insurance or liability thing or something? They filmed in Namibia for the previous film where they could probably blow up the countryside and abuse stuntment as they wish. Now they're in Australia the crackers aren't so generous.

fury road was over time and over budget while people involved with the production stated that working in the desert was miserable.
I'm not a fan of furiosa not being shot on location, but I can understand why they did it.

        >>fury road was over time and over budget while people involved with the production stated that working in the desert was miserable.
        >I'm not a fan of furiosa not being shot on location, but I can understand why they did it.
They shouldn't have done the movie then, seeing how it's pointless anyway, like most prequels.
Imagine filming Sorcerer, but you can't do the bridge scene because it's too hard, so you just skip it. Just don't do the movie then.

Like that anon said, nobody needs to know how Furiosa got her arm chopped off anyway, she was a cool character with some visual quirks like every other character in the movie, end of story.

      Anonymous

iirc the story for furiosa was written first, before they thought of fury road. George is getting up there in age, and the movie studios were jerking him around on making another Mad Max film, plus they fricked him over on the video game too, somehow he lost control over the production of it. So this movie is just him putting the material to use. Seems like we've got two more movies from Miller, both starring Max, before he throws in the towel. Hopefully this will be another major success and we get the next two in a timely manner.
