No. It goes further back than that. The truth is that Chris was cursed from the day he was born. He had the misfortune of being born in a time and place that autism wasn't really understood, and people were still trying to figure out how to manage it, to parents who were too old and tired from raising the kids of their respective previous marriages to put much effort into raising another kid, let alone one with special needs. They were too stubborn and proud to put him in special education, they tried to basically force him to be normal even when it clearly wasn't working. If he had been born ten years later, or his parents had been a few decades younger, or if he hadn't been born in Virginia, he might have turned out quasi-functional. But then he wouldn't be the Chris we know.

Adventure Time is a looong running series I was the target demographic when it came out and when it finished I was an adult. I think like me, most kids simply lost interest. Me and my sister used to love catching every new episode at the start. I bowed out after the 5th season.
That's a major issue with a lot of cartoons. They aren't written for kids; they're colorful quirky shows for people in their late 20s-thru-30s that are relatable to them and an excuse to get overly analytical of young characters' ideologies, sexuality, and so forth.
