There is no middle ground? Comedic, but a genuine threat?

1990 Movie Shredder is the gold standard, so definitely serious.

      This.
But serious Dimension X is garbage.
If the mutant total is over 7, TMNT should be wacky.

Serious. A threat, but not other worldly so.

    mix of both
when shredder's not intimidating his goons or fighting the turtles he's full comedic villain but when he's actually serious you get the fricking prowler from spider verse in a suit of armor made of blades fricking b***hes and taking names

His seriousness contrasts well with the turtles' goofyness.

Are there even any other comedic Shredders besides the 87 one? Been a long time since I've engaged in much TMNT stuff so maybe I'm missing something, but I was just thinking the other day what a complete outlier the 1987 cartoon's Shredder is compared to all the other Shredders. Everyone else just seems to be varying flavors of serious ninja crime boss dude. Some have gimmicks (demonic shit, alien, worm clone whatever) and varying degrees of stoicism/hamminess but you generally know what you're getting: serious ninja crime boss dude.
I don't even think any of the video games that use 87 Shredder actually give him his comedic characterization. He just acts serious like all the other Shredders and really kind of like a generic "mwahahaha" villain.

And in the very first episode of Season 8 (the first Red Sky season), Shredder blows up the Channel 6 building and everybody inside would have died had Splinter not opened up an escape route. It kinda fluctuates for him depending on the setting.

I remember him being pretty serious in season 1 too, but I'm pretty sure I remember him whining some then too

The five-part opener ended with Shredder whining that he didn't want to be stuck in Dimension X taking orders from Krang, which more or less set up his overall tone for much of the show.

Weirdly he was still a physical powerhouse that beat the turtles each and every time they fought.

But I never could figure out just why he was hanging with Krang all the time anyway, or what Krang was getting out of it. He makes a terrible minion and ordered the other minions around more often.

The Turtles were already defeating him easily by the 11th episode.

Supposedly, Shredder was getting Krang's resources to make his dream Foot Clan of loyal robots and mutants, and Krang was getting an opportunity to extend his dominion beyond Dimension X. Both had plans to betray the other at the earliest opportunity, but that fell by the wayside as their losses kept mounting.

        >I never could figure out just why he was hanging with Krang all the time anyway, or what Krang was getting out of it
They kept each other company. Uncle Phil, shredder’s va, said they were like an old married couple.

Mirage is just okay for a character creators didn't expect to become popular.
1987's antics were endearing, but honestly as a kid I thought he was scarier than he really was.
    1990 is probably the best.
2003 started out great. There was a genuine air of menace and mystery with him, but the more about him was revealed the more silly it got. Felt too goofy ever for TMNT.
    2012 is meh.
    2014 is a nothingburger.
Quit IDW a long time ago, can't say much.
    Never watched Rise
So I guess judging by that it's mostly serious

    I prefer Splinter.

As much as I love the 1987 cartoon, I wish Shredder's character had been built up over time instead of straight off already being buds with Krang in the Technodrome with a army of robotic ninjas. Pretty similar to how things sorta played out in the first two films. Shredder has the Foot Clan made up of punks. Shredder starts mutating punks. Shredder teams up with Krang.
