His assertion was that male stories largly require the guy to prove himself, go on a quest/adventure/or journey, and have a woman who he either rescues, protects or impresses. Oh, and a dragon to slay, which needn't be a literal dragon.
Stories written by women have what I call the "passenger" problem. Seriously, think about all the more popular ones. Fifty Shades, Harry Potter, Twilight, Hunger Games, Jupiter Ascending, and most romantic comedies it's the same thing. There's nothing special about the girl, she doesn't have any special skills or talent. If anything is special about her it's a birthright thing she didn't know about. Something that requires no action on her part and she has no control of. Then men fight over her. They're largely carried through "their" stories by the actions of other characters.
