South Park came out at the perfect time and captured the 90s in the youthful edgy way and was creative and surreal. Simpsons was more of a traditional cartoon / sitcom. Like a character dying in the simpsons effects the course of the show but on South Park anything could happen

Simpsons with the original writers was best. South Park is still pretty good because Matt and Trey still do it, even though they're out of touch rich guys. The Simpsons is just millennial writers using the IP as a skin suit.

Season 2-8 of the Simpsons cannot be topped. But the quality has plummeted with each season. South park has been consistently more entertaining, and has never hit anywhere near the lows Nu-Simpsons has.

The Simpsons was a better sitcom but peak South Park was much funnier. Before it became overly preachy South Park was just fricking hilarious, I think it was probably the funniest show ever in it's prime.
South Park was always pretty preachy. The "I learned something today" monologues were more often Trey going on his soapbox than they were ironic or satirical.
For sure, but the monologues didn't affect the quality of the episode as much. That's what I meant by "overly preachy", the point they were trying to make didn't saturate the entire plotline like it does in newer ones.
Oh definitely agree, I haven't watched South Park in several years and that's a huge part of the reason

The Simpsons in it's prime tried to be a "family show", an actual sitcom, it's obviously not going to be as funny as something like South Park. It's more wild you've never met anyone who doesn't like The Simpsons, lol
Golden age Simpsons is better than anything South Park ever did. You can argue Simpsons had the lower lows, or that the aggregate is worse. But prime v prime its pretty one sided

The Simpsons isn't adult, it's a family show that happened to have content that parents weren't used to seeing in cartoons (like Bart saying "who the hell are you"). South Park is an actual adult show you don't want your kids watching.
yeah most episodes of the Simpsons aren't particularly inappropriate for children. Once in a while there'll be an episode where sex is the main focus, and they tend to cram all the overly adult stuff in those

echoboomer here: I could sit with my (now estranged) parents and watch simpsons after jeopardy and before la femme nikita (all channels were one back then for me). they didn't usually let me watch it but sometimes they'd let me. it was fine. dumb, crass, but fine. however, south park was forbidden after hours akin to watching real sex live on hbo. that's that.
