offensive power so you can go on internet imageboards while stroking your tiny third-worlder penis and say "muh cartoon charactar is da strongest!!!"
Defensive.
If your mech can even be scratched, it's not good enough.
move good, they can't hit you, you can hit them
Can it survive the series equivalent of a nuke point blank? If so, everything else doesnt matter, because you will win the persistence fight
mobile>offensive>defensive just like real lifes
however it shouldn't really unbalance these three. it wants to still be able to take a hit in a worst case scenario, it wants a weapon that can deal with the threat swiftly while having room for error and it wants to be agile for a plethora of reasons:
basic logistics
ability to lower and hide it's silhouette in cover
ability to shift from cover to cover quickly
ability to get into good positions for ambushes in time
ability to dodge incoming fire and out maneuver enemies
ability to be able to aim in a 360 cone in a split second
defense becomes more and more ineffective as the arms race keeps pushing more and more powerful offensive weapons, unless your series has an endless supply of new bullshitiums being discovered. So the focus should be more on the suit being able to keep the pilot alive in the case of a catastrophic failure and parts of it being easily replaced as they should be ideally the first parts to get hit.
if you look at the evolution of body armour the most standard issue kit is a chest plate carrier and helmet to protect your vital organs
Mobility. The entire reason one would use a mech over a tank is because the bipedal form allows you to move around with more ease.
What if I wanted firepower or defense?
Short of bullshitium to miniaturize it, a bigger gun is going to be a bigger gun. A bigger armor is going to be a bigger armor. You're going to have to sacrifice mobility to the point you're less a vehicle than a stationary emplacement. Which defeats the point of being a mech.
then you spend money on best active and passive protection systems you can afford and most advanced munitions you can afford, including missiles
this poster is stuck in XIX-XXth century
mobility will always be the most important factor in a fight, and of course the pilot's wits and quick thinking.
let me elaborate. in Dunbine, Aura Machines are completely immune to Earth's most devastating nukes, however later on humans realize blowing them up from the inside with fast as frick suicide attacks is the most effective way of dealing with Aura Ships.
the ZZ starts off as a sturdy and powerful motherfricker but by the end of the series its defensive and offensive capabilites become more and more irrelevant as Judau has to fight faster machines, forcing him to actually come up with better tactics to outsmart enemies.
likewise, late UC suits are so fast and compact it makes impossible for older, slower Feddie shit to fight back the Crossbone Vanguard or Zanscare.
Looking cool.
All the replies so far were missing something basic in their considerations
The answer, like for any other unit, is recon, communication and logistics
I mentioned logistics and ambushes implies recon
Validate me bawd!
UwU OwO you get a headpat I guess
Speed
Tell that to the Correl.
that's an evangelion
Pilot safety
Bullshit. I'm tired of these glorified bus drivers smashing up billion dollar military equipment and walking away without any consequences. Now, the mobile trace system, THERE'S a method that gets results.
mobility.
offensive-wise better leave it to superguns, most likely mounted to some huge power source.
defensive-wise you'll still lose against said superguns.
the pilot's relationship with their mother
Whatever's cool. None of this is real. Real world tactics and logics don't apply.
looks
Agility is the best. Full Frontal straight up says "it doesn't matter how powerful you are if you can't hit me" and it's the one thing he's right about. Dog shit leader but sick ass pilot
manual dexterity, followed by mobility.
