whiplash is very direct and literal. black swan is more artsy and metaphorical. i remember thinking certain parts of whiplash were kinda stupid and "just get over it, bro" or "but why make THAT choice? thats stupid." black swan's descent into madness was much more entertaining and thrilling than some boring autist's hyper-fixation.
Black Swan, obviously. Better cast, better aesthetic and cinematography, and you can buy into the core story. Becoming a world famous ballerina is a goal. Some autist hitting the drums and pretending that it's this great thing that he has to "sacrifice" his gf for or acting high and mighty around his meathead relatives is just cringy. It's drumming. He's not even in a band. It's pure moronation and making it this all important thing is just hilarious.
being a good drummer is a great and very difficult thing but not in the way whiplash makes it to be, the whiplash kind of drummer (and musicians in general) never create great stuff

And there was this old guy, in his 60s for sure, all by himself on the very corner of the row. he got up and started leaving at the very end of the movie, minutes before the credit rolled. I think he saw the movie before and knew it was going to end and left before it did.
