Since I built it myself I made sure it had clearance underneath for those big 2' tall plastic storage totes. I would have been perfectly content to stay on the floor if it wasn't for women though.
the jap setup requires a tatami floor, a special mat placed on top, and a special mattress. though i noticed in the shin chan anime they don't bother with this whole setup and just have a rolled up mattress in a closet and a regular apartment, not sure which way is more common
