I'm currently reading the comic for the first time, just finished volume 4
Scott is anything but a chad. Most girls admit that they pity agree to go out with him. He is just a self insert with pathetic nerds who can get a girl to like them because they are "cute and quirky".
Plus he is a complete moron, like, serious mentally handicapped moronic. He has a.d.d., Alzheimers and who knows what else.
The only thing he has going for him is the "he is strongest fighter I know", which makes no sense considering how lazy he is.
Since you're on Volume 4. He's not really that strong, he defeated the first ex, which is a an achievement, maybe.
The 2nd Ex he had trick, and couldn't beat Todd at the height of his powers. And maybe you could credit Scott in beating the Hasbian in Volume 4.

As someone who just now read the comic after seeing the movie several times over the years, I would say the casting is perfect. Scott in the comics certainly does not think he is "too cool to give a frick", I don't even know where that sentiment comes from. He is just a giant idiot.
Scott is an arrogant narcissist who is unable to process that he has any personal flaws or any room for improvement or has ever made any mistakes.
The upside of that is that he's confident and will try to do things other, more rational people would be scared to do, and sometimes he succeeds.
The downside is that he doesn't have a proper sense of right and wrong and drags down the lives of everyone around him.
His main character arc is learning to accept that he has fricked up and is a frickup and start to take responsibility for who he is and the things he's done.
None of that is really present in the movie. The movie's version of the story isn't bad and the reason it's different is because it's based on an early draft of the comic, not because it ignored the source material.

i reread the whole series a week ago and its shorter-feeling than i remembered it being, but what stood out is that the ending really goes faster than i thought initially. and the whole glow thing is really weak but even o'malley has criticized a lot of the aspects of the ending
yeah, thats the thing, its just kind of an inconsistent mish mash of ideas. it initially is just a gag on ramona very literally being the girl of his dreams but it becomes really prominent in book 4 and it just starts to behave quite inconsistently
