That guy who wrote Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy.

Arguably yes, but Hitchhiker's Guide is still great and it's more allowed to do that sort of thing because it's primarily a comedy. The main problem with the three writers in the OP is that they primarily do action-adventure capeshit, but insert the humour anyways and, what's more, aren't too funny though I think Joss in his prime was good at least

      Terry Pratchett

No. Pratchett's humour never got in the way of the serious moments. It's an important part of his style, but it was never used to deflate any honest drama or undermine his own work with lazy, self-aware digs at its expense (he'd poke fun at the genre and cliches, but not himself)
And again, Pratchett's actually funny and clever

I hate everyone that writes similarly: Bendis, Slott, Fraction, King, Taylor, BKV, Adams, etc.

Yeah, manga is pretty bad with this shit too.

And if you say fallout 1 and 2 are reddit you should be gangbanged by supermutants and strung up on a tree for your ignorance.

    >the big monster roars in the main characters' faces
    >"Whoa dude, say it, don't spray it!"
The problem with capeshit is that it's deathly afraid of appearing sincere about anything. Everything has to be laughed off with a sardonic quip. If the characters aren't invested in the conflict, why should the audience?

This is why I always hated Whedon. The only type of protagonist he knows how to write is "douchy smug butthole"

      Anonymous

Meh, it also depends on the character who would act like that used to be just that, a single character who often functioned as a deliberate juxtapose to the more seriously afraid ones around him.
Like Dante from Devil May Cry or Ash Williams. That kind of character only really works if everything else is presented sincerely

why wouldn't you want to deflate tension in a story unless you have a criminally short attention span and want every movie to be a perpetual action scene without any background or resolution. fricking learn to write.

Whedon. Bendis was just comic Whedon, ergo more affordable and worked for less money. Slott is his own brand of whatever, but he's way too much Saturday Morning stuff to be anywhere near Bendispeak.

Guy on YouTube called ShreddedNerd made a great video calling it "Millennial Writing" and he points the blame at Twitter addicts in general

  23. 11 months ago

I'm okay with humor being used as a tool to get the character's mind off potential impending doom. If the characters are clearly nervous and trying to make themselves feel better about the situation, it can work but they certainly shouldn't do that ON the battlefield, before or after the fight is fine.
But modern writers have no idea how to write that convincingly, they just ruin the tension by making the characters look "2cool4school" like Whedon does.
