The producers were marketing the whole season with the character death quite a lot. They started doing it a whole year before the episode would even premiere. Plenty of major news websites reported on it. Up until they released the picture in the OP, I think everyone assumed all the hype was because the death was gonna involve a character who played a bigger role in the series.
Maybe it was going to be Edna, but then the actress died, so it would have been in incredibly bad taste make a spectacle of it.
But they already animated an episode where Krusty Sr dies, so even though he wasn't the 'main' character death, they included him in that promo and acted like it was him all along.
