Writing was on the wall for TFS regardless. Once they tried to monetize, it finally gave Toei the opening they needed to put their boot up their ass. And since a bunch of the TFS cast had become real VAs, they weren’t going to compromise that to finish out a gag dub

I feel you're blowing this out of proportion. Super was always going to be a kids show because the standards changed for the time slot in which DB/Z originally aired. Toriyama was always a gag author. I highly doubt his plan for Super was "I'm going to reference this niche parody of my work."

It’s funny Toei takes inspiration from them but at the same time passionately hates them. Funimation called in the whole Abridged cast to voice the chibi characters in a recap episode as a joke and when Toei found out they forced Funi to redub the entire segment with the proper VAs.

A big part of it is being familiar with just how moronic Yugioh was. The source material was inherently silly and overly dramatic, the anime compressed entire arcs into single episodes and 4kids had their ridiculous localization and censorship. But also a lot of it is just recurring jokes and references which are a lot funnier when you're 14.
i tried watching through this and didn't laugh a single time after 10 episodes, i skipped ahead and it was still gravely unfunny
