Batfamily stans are really the only fans I’ve ever seen with a large amount of them outright saying it’s normal to not engage with source material and that they shouldn’t have to in order to be a fan. What actually happened there and how did their shit start to leak into canon?

Normie women are lazy and don't want to spend time getting into comics. And I'm pretty sure most of those comics aren't really geared toward them. Even with all the gay shit stuff like Nightwing has, cape comics are still fundamentally not focused on slice-of-life, shipping, angst, and feelings to the extent women want. They'd much rather read webtoons that are about that and write their own fanfiction that is about that.

Batfam stans normalize their "autism on main and proud of it" syndrome. Though, I'm willing to bet it's in every fandom now since it seem like a generation/time period issue brought upon us by infantilization and anti-social networks.
      >What actually happened there and how did their shit start to leak into canon?
DC. They're the one who chose the directions their brands are going.

      Anonymous

They're right. The majority of the comic material for any given group of cape heroes will, in fact, just be an endless series of reinterpretations of reinterpretations by a stream of different writers and artists. Capes do not tend to have the source-to-adaptation relationship you'd find in actual creator-led fiction. Instead they have this abortion of a thing, where a vague brand idea is artificially kept alive well beyond its years while pretending to comply with an increasingly contorted canon.
To be frank, "Batfamily stans" are by nature wanking over a set of ideas which aren't well catered-to by the comic runs to begin with. The idea of anyone reading runs from actual comics to understand the so-called source material for a slice of life weeb pandering webtoon thing is fundamentally just fricking hilarious. These latest re-adaptations are created in the first place BECAUSE the comics lack what people want.

That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. “Casuals” think libraries are gay and watch football on the weekend. They don’t know who Chris ware is and if they’ve heard of mazzucchelli (likely they haven’t) it’s because they googled daredevil born again or Batman year one. They likely think Frank Miller drew both of those himself.

Library types who think shit like Superman Smashes the Klan is anything more than puerile drivel and Building Stories is a seminal work of art are the only people who know who ware is.

Ware was the name dujour in the early aughts for people who went to Barnes and Noble to pick up and put down building stories and jimmy corrigan a few times before buying kingdom come. Id call them secondaries more than casuals, they don’t like comics they like shit like ware’s comics because they think they’re anything more elevating and worthwhile than cape shit. They’re comics they can call graphic novels and discuss like college freshman over a Frappuccino as if that’s a sophisticated, real drink and not an American made branded item.

I’m 31 bro, modern comic movies started coming out when I was in middle school. most of my friends have seen maybe 1 or 2 of these flicks dating back to Spider-Man and X1. why do you think normie means someone with Twitter when most people don’t have Twitter?

Vertigo is still marginally better than average capeshit, even though really good capeshit (and I mean REALLY good) is way better than whatever edgy shit Vertigo has.

I don’t agree, shit is shit. Most people just like vertigo for being non-house art and off-kilter writing. Shitty house art (which hasnt even existed since like the 80s) is no better or worse than shitty Alt art. Different for the sake of different.

I doubt that, even if they're just idly watching a TV airing while doing other stuff. The "boom" is dying down but Spider-verse was still one of the top grossing movies this year, it wasn't just comic nerds and casuals watching it, a ton of normies went to check it out too.
Unless you're polling everyone you know(which probably isn't that many people) you probably aren't getting a good estimate of who's watching what.

Here is a poll from Pew Research about the scale of social media usage and how much information people are getting from it.
Most people regularly use some social media site, if not several. And most people get some significant amount of news or other topical means of staying informed from said social media, on one site or another.

Beyond that, superhero films have made obscene amounts of money for the last decade, way too much for it to be carried by a small group of nerds.

      >implying said fanfic writers know anything about the obscure characters they write about

      Anonymous

The sad thing is that a lot of fanfic writers unironically know more about the comics than some people DC hires. At this point there's a bunch of tv writers who mostly just know the movies, Arkham games, and half-remembered episodes of BTAS and just want to do their "definitive" Batman story(that was probably already done by Alan Grant in the 80's/90's in a single or two issue storyline)
      >see Sean G Murphy not knowing Jason was the second Robin.

      > Fanfc writers = fanfic readers
Lmao, no. Batfamily stans like knowing their headcanons are based on canon. That's end there, but it's enough to feel valid and girlboss or gaslight other stans. They all become quiet the moment you start pointing continuity issues. It's a concept they refuse to touch and it's why they openly dissociate their fantasy from canon until WFA, which completely cater to their vision.
However, most fanfic writers don't know much about canon either. This also ignore the lack of media literacy being rampant in capeshit fandoms because most capeshits story are made for and by manchildren. Even the few fanfic writers who are both knowledgeable and literate can also be very loose about their canon since fanfic is about indulging yourself or fix something, because them too hate modern comics.
