It's typical French shlock designed to shock you. It was Titane that really made me finally call the French an abomination. Godless, wretched race.

      Anonymous

fill me in, what was so crazy about Titane that was worse than most french shock movies?

        Anonymous

I had something detailed written out for you, but in the end I'm just so tired of the French. The film develops into something more perverted than the meaningless violence it portrays. It's just very anti-human and frankly disgusting.

          Anonymous

Don't listen to this anon, Titane is much tamer than Martyrs, mostly because it has some funny scenes and does not take itself that seriously. Also the gore is like one tenth the amount compared to Martyrs.

it’s sort of anti art and that’s the point. humans suffer horribly in life and we justify it with some eventual revelation of meaning or happiness that just isn’t coming (in the eyes of the film). we ascribe meaning or benefit to our pain to cope with the fact it genuinely signifies nothing. they tortured that girl hoping for is insight into the purpose of pain and there was just nothing there. the only rational response to this is suicide. it’s a reversal of the joan of arc story in a lot of ways, she suffered horribly for her beliefs and we assume that her steadfastness and conviction meant something, or was admirable in some way, or was perhaps even rewarded with fame and reverence or happiness in the next life. this film is like the anti joan. just a terrified animal being abused for no real purpose because we have to make sense of the horror that life puts us through. there’s no reward, no saintliness and no meaning to her endurance of the pain. i don’t agree with the message but it’s one that does unironically make you think and become uncomfortable with the implication.

      No it doesn't
People try to give meaning to everything, not just pain, and finding it or not it's a personal quest, not a scientific one, as the results will just be personal

you can interpret it that way sure, or that all of this shit was pointless agony and she can now no longer cope with existence

        >don’t agree with the message but it’s one that does unironically make you think and become uncomfortable with the implication.
        No it doesn't
People try to give meaning to everything, not just pain, and finding it or not it's a personal quest, not a scientific one, as the results will just be personal

a personal quest is just synonymous with a meaningless one. again, it’s just finding an appropriate coping mechanism that will ultimately fail in the face of reality and death. even if you try to apply nietzsche to this film, it’s already going beyond him and refuting his answer to nihilism. who fricking gives a shit about your brain desperately trying to find a reason to continue existing when all it can conjure is senseless nonsense to dull the fact that you are just an amalgam of moving flesh made to suffer for no particular purpose, and that every person who died in agony for their beliefs is basically a clown sleight of handed by their own unconscious into accepting intolerable conditions by inventing a reason for those conditions. the movie demonstrates how futile that is. like the other anon said, the only positive interpretation is the one where the afterlife was real because, as slight and irrational of a chance that it is in the film, that’s the only way any of the torture is genuinely redeemed. inventing your own meaning for that torture ultimately fails in the face of the facts. the woman either shoots herself because she realises the meaning we give to pain is a pointless doomed exercise that prolongs suffering or she realised the next world will redeem this one. but it’s almost certainly the former

Problem is, why does leader lady not share this info with the rest of her gang? She rather tells them to keep searching before killing herself, something that does not fit well with either of those options.

I fricking hate this movie but I'm not a dumb moron to dismiss it as worthless braindead trash.

Martyrs may very well reflect the most fricked aspects about humanity, specifically if there are elitist groups that exist primarily to hurt the innocent. The early half is especially strong with how the story builds up to its reveals.

You're actually a b***h if you won't watch it. "Torture porn" is thrown around too much when it has nothing half as bad as a Saw movie. If you really want to know...

Cult tortures girl and skin her alive so she can experience actual death and tell everyone about it. Upon reveal the cult leader kills herself and no one knows what she was told

If you're wondering why anyone would want to watch it... I don't know, if you can get over the "torture porn" (which is pretty tame compared to most of the shit in the genre), the idea behind the martyrs is kind of interesting.

i used to agree and think it would be better as just a short film since the only really interesting part is how she kills herself after hearing the answer and all the things that could mean, but i think stretching out the torture scenes is to make you really feel it, that if it was just a short cutscene it wouldn't be as visceral so i like it now

yea the beginning part is just to buildup to the ending but it is necessary

i'm a hedonist so i hate senseless violence. if it's not comedy or for a dramatic purpose it is upsetting.
it's so brutal with the french dude beating the shit out of a teenager girl and then having a pleasant conversation with his fake wife and colleague. like god damn it's dehumanizing.

I've always thought that showing characters getting endlessly tortured to get a reaction out of the audience is one of the laziest forms of screenwriting, just pointless trash not art. That said Martyrs actually affected me, obviously the theme of sadistic elites inflicting suffering without consequences is really scary but it was the main character's loneliness, the loss of her loving relationships and her identity that really hit me hard.
