Both are true. Scorsese was right about everything he said about capeshit. Snyder is right on acknowledging it`s an informed opinion from a master of the craft but it is also true that Scorsese used the controversy as a publicity stunt.

Controversy has always been part of America`s marketing strategies ever since Griffith made The birth of a nation. The movie depicted the KKK as the heroes and used white actors with their faces painted with shoe polish as the black characters. It was absolutely outrageous and controversial and obviously made bank. Home TV sets were 15 years away and rentals were like 50 or so... so a lot of people watched it several times on cinemas.

And then the madman made his second movie which he motherfrickingly titled "Intolerance". So you see... the tactic is almost as old as cinema itself.

      Anonymous

      >It was absolutely outrageous and controversial
It wasnt. You are applying sensibilities that only came to be 100 years after the fact. NO one gave a shit about white men doing black roles, til literally 20 years ago.

        Anonymous

Oh but it was. There were protest trying to ban the film and all that. The black community certainly perceived the film as harmful.

      >And then the madman made his second movie which he motherfrickingly titled "Intolerance".
The funniest thing about that is that he said he named it that because people were being intolerant of him due to Birth of a Nation. Griffith had balls the size of fricking coconuts, what an absolute mad lad he was.

Capeshit isn't art, but not every movie is art. I don't know why they get so butthurt. A corporate product made to shill lunchboxes and Happy Meal toys or fill a lineup slot on a streaming service release calender isn't art. Anything with test screenings and focus groups isn't art. It's just objective.

But, that's fine. Not everything is art. I like some stuff that isn't art. It's okay to like some trash. But, you've gotta expand those horizons. And most of these capeshit consoomers just never wanna do that.
