The existence of Michelle Jones ensures that the real MJ is locked out of ever being a real character and I wouldn't be surprised if it was on purpose. I doubt they would be able to get away with pairing Peter with an original love interest if she was named differently, making the possibility of the actual Mary Jane being out there somewhere.
