This. It’s way too early to say which characters become the ones who are remembered and considered influential to other creators.

      Frick no.
Spongobob's importance to the industry can not be understated. Avatar is a good show, but a minor footnote in history at best.

Normies are the true test. Show this chart to a rando on the street and with the exception of Finn and Jake they will be able to name all of the characters. Hazbin and those zoomers shows are only known to small circles of internet autismos.

I hate it but I can't deny it. Same logic as [...]. Every parent I knew knew colorful horses show. If you're going by the normie test MLP is gonna be more instantly identifiable to people.

I'd rather think of "important" as indicating long-lasting influence on the field of animation itself, rather than pure cultural penetration.

Shouldn't the 80s one be either He-Man or TMNT?

I'm not so sure about Transformers being there myself, but TMNT are really more of a 90s thing. He-Man is a good choice since it was important in kickstarting the toy cartoons of the 80s. But it was also a dinosaur in terms of its production not being outsourced, which was another major aspect of the decade. So I'm still a bit torn.

          >I'd rather think of "important" as indicating long-lasting influence on the field of animation itself, rather than pure cultural penetration.
This. Simpsons kickstarted a whole generation of cartoons aimed at adults via its popularity, AT similarly pioneered the idea of cartoons aimed as much at a young adult audience as at kids and the staff reads like a who’s who of the animation industry today. For that reason I think it’s unlikely that Bluey will earn the 2020s spot, it’s a quality kids’ cartoon and incredibly popular, but then so is Peppa Pig. I don’t see it having far reaching influence.

You really do sound like a moronic zoomer. “Inspired” doesn’t just mean “copied”, we aren’t just talking about Family Guy here. The Simpsons created the conditions for creators to get animated shows aimed at adults greenlit because it was so successful. KotH, The Critic, Dr. Katz, arguably even South Park, none of those are Simpsons rip-offs but it’s unlikely networks would have taken a chance on them if The Simpsons didn’t exist.

        Bluey.

For now, it's Bluey. The decade is not even half over.

If you're going that route you should swap in Paw Patrol for Adventure Time.

Adults did not emotionally break down to Paw Patrol. It just saw a lot of success in places like Japan.

        Pomni, skibidi toilet, or Rick

Pomni for internet animation/indie/Youtube animation by a longshot. It's amazing how Hazbin's success has already fallen off. The only thing it has or was ever known for was for Charlastor.

First, that's a shitty metric for what makes an "important" cartoon and want adult man having a deep emotional response to Bluey should neck himself
Second, I have social media full of mommies because I'm old as frick and there were dozens of posts about how the girl pup having sad scenes in the recent Paw Patrol movie made them blub

Adventure Time started airing in the year 2010, which is the last year of the 2000s. There is no year zero, so 2001-2010 was the first decade of the new millennium.

That's not relevant since the bulk of the show still came out during the 2010s. Spongebob began in 1999, The Simpsons began in 1989, Scooby Doo began in 1969, Tom & Jerry started in 1940. None of those are repping the tail-end of the previous decade either.

And the Simpsons started in the late 80's. That's not the point. The point is which cartoon defined the decade in question, not when it started airing.

Fair point about the Simpsons, which I missed, however I based my post on the image, which says "in their respective decade". Might it have said, "respective decades", I would not have taken issue with it.

Shouldn't the 80s one be either He-Man or TMNT?

80's is tough because there were a lot of highly recognizable properties pushing toys. I might argue against TMNT just because it's popularity straddled the 80s and 90s arguably hitting it's peak very early in the 90s. You could also make a case for G.I. Joe, as it was huge and equally popular to Transformers.

He-Man is a really tough situation too because he was hugely influential in a very small window of time. Basically peaked hard early because of the quality of the toys but then more or less fell completely off the face of the earth after other properties started making high quality action figures. In the early/mid 80s you couldn't get away from him, by the end of the decade he was almost completely forgotten.
