Why are all characters in this show awful?

American Dad showed you can do it without making every character a piece of shit.

The cutaway gags are all the braindead fans of Family Guy care about, what the actual cast does outside them is completely meaningless, might as well make the Griffins be as abhorrent as possible for cheap insane gags.

My favorite cutaway gag was one that got cut(away) from season 5. It involved Peter going to see Elaine Stritch on Broadway.
      >she wasn't even dead yet and they did her like that
I laughed like fricking mad when I first saw it. Lemme see if I can find it online.

We got a Tom & Jerry expert in our hands it seems. Guess what, people are more eager to laugh at the funny cartoon cat and the mouse to be mean to each other, not the cartoon family who are somehow still together, there are perception filters many people just can't get rid off, that is they can't laugh at a families being cruel to each other.

There's a limit for that, America Dad has the Smiths often pull some mean shit to each other, but the writers know it has to have a limit to just how insane it can get, and they are consistently showing moments where the Smiths love each other.

Meanwhile Family Guy has crossed all lines, the Griffins might as well be actively working their damn hardest to destroy each other, and there's zero balance with any genuine moments of family bonding.

It's common in adult shows now because writing characters with personalities and nuance is harder than just writing over the top edgy jokes and half assing a deep moment or too. Look at simpsons, it was the king of having zanny characters but making you feel for them and understand why they did what they did in the show. Bart was a lil shit and mischevious, but we knew under that he wanted to be cared for like lisa and acknowledged. Same with homer he was what peter was but we could forgive it as he actually had a heart and would give up his happiness for his families and he had real struggles. Really it's mostly that the cutaway format is a easy way out of having to use a full 20-24mins of content.

It's why I never co-sign family guy was ever that good, it was average at best because it was a poor knock off of a great show. The reason stuff like Ted and AD work is because Seth is using his own ideas and can focus on comedy first over character. Also he learned how to mute it by making the family dynamics/character dynamics toxic from the jump. The smiths are a very unstable and unhealthy family but we know that by ep 1 and it still works because they usually do things that fit their character and world views. It's not just FG but just a weird obsession with edgy/safe edgy humor in animation it's like they feel the only way to let you know this isn't FOP or Spongebob is by swearing every five seconds or having some grotesque sex scene or torture porn level gore.

      >comedy first over character
But that's Family Guy. Ted and American Dad work because the heart and consistent character dynamics take greater priority. Even then, early FG still shared that same healthy balance between comedy and heart.

      >just writing over the top edgy jokes
      >comedy first over character

It's these two things, or at least, this was true for Family Guy for a very, very long time. The characters had no consistent personalities, they tended to return to some cheap one-dimensional trait but to make a cheap laugh work those could change, so Peter might be decent for one scene and then in the next be a raging rapist pedophile homicidal psychopath for a cheap laffo-o. Nobody gives the slightest shit about plot or the characters, at least for years, it was all just about a bunch of totally disconnected cutaway gags you could do with any random characters in any random order. But yes this was what people wanted, it's been very successful.

Also yes, sometimes new writers come in (recently or even a while ago) and try to change things up, some newer episodes try to change this, but for the most part, that's how it's been.

They are awful just because the show's humor is mostly just shock and gore and sex and swearing humor, all that it has is being edgy.

I think that I don't enjoy this show because it's not edgy at all after 20 fricking years of the same fricking thing over and over again. There's no shock at all anymore. It's just tedious and dull now. The point is now moot. All adult animation now rips off family guy. There's no edge and no shock at all to Family Guy. The humor is older than dirt. It's completely safe and lame and boring.

As I saw someone coin about Hazbin hotel, it's what you'd call safe edgy. As you said originally it worked because of how people were at the time, it did what Seth and co wanted made older people/parents clutch their pearls. The kids went to it because well my parents don't like it and "oh they swear and have sex" but as you said it's basically the syndrome thing "when everyone is edgy no one is".

I feel Family guy is one of those shows Idk who watches it, but probably kids. I haven't watched in years now out side of clips I see online. I feel the series lost me really after S5ish. But it's definitely a it's on in the background show and as I said their weren't many adult animated shows so you just kind of watched it as a kid and teen.

As you said I mean it's still around so must be doing something right but something can still be on and terrible. I mean modern simpsons, the office and spongebob etc, many shows and series went on way longer than they should have be cause of inital success and loyal fan simpery. Also yeah in the end of the day I question if family guy was ever even that funny in retrospect, as you said it was always kind of basic but I feel at least in the early seasons they tried to do more than just cringe basic shock humor. Like now you have brian and stewie having kids and full blown making out with no real joke involved. Peter just does insert Zanny thing with no real rhyme or reason. feels like it's all just building up to the next shock humor scene or cutaway.

        >The characters had no consistent personalities
This bothers me. There is a certain satisfaction see characters get developed, even if it's comedy.
Classical Simpsons writers knew this, which is why they bothered to give so much character to side characters.
Arguably a joke is always funnier when follows pre-established rules of the world.

This. It's baffling people still compare American Dad and Family Guy as if it supports their argument. Both families have done awful acts for the sake of humor.

As for Family Guy itself, the latest season has given Meg more appreciation in a few episodes. Snapple Decision showcased Lois's motherly side, not making fun of Meg once. These characters can still have their positive moments shine to this day.

This is just the "early family guy was better" mentality again, which is tiring to see.

"Can be" is the key phrasing, there’s countless decent character dynamics in American Dad showing the Smiths are a tight family before they start shooting, maiming, insulting each other. Family Guy skips all that and keeps everyone on constant piece of shit mode.

Stand out as a steaming pile of trash? The fact Family Guy’s "popularity" today amounts to the millions of cutaway gags compilations on TikTok should tell anyone how a memetic mutation of Family Guy that is popular, not the show or the characters themselves anymore.
