Because they popularized it. Sure you can find precedents in pop culture before that, but the modern "multiverse" concept that gets betaen to death today? Pure Flash of Two Worlds, especially the "different styles" for different versions of the same character thing.

    >Why are capeshit comics from the big two so into the ideas of shared universe and multiverse?
it's an inevitable side-effect of having multiple comic runs for the same character
fans naturally start comparing golden age superman to new 52 superman to dickbutt mcgilly superman to red son superman to...
and next thing you know the writers are delving into multiverse stuff to cater to those fans

"Multiverse theory" is an arm of the global depopulation agenda whereby the miserable are convinced they can 'escape' into another life through the door of death.

The multiverse has been around in comic books since 1961. It was more so DC's territory for a long while, since it was how they reconciled their Golden Age heroes with their then-current line-up, though Marvel started dabbling in it in the 80s. And even beyond comics, the idea of parallel worlds and visiting alternate timelines is something that's been a staple of science fiction
I think what happened recently is that Spider-Verse was a big smash success as a comic event despite it being standard mediocre Slott fluff, then the animated film got masses of praise, and, Hollywood being the trend-chasing behemoth it is, smelt something in the water. So then suddenly we've just been getting a veritable flood of multiverse-related CONTENT in almost everything for the past several years.
I think also, from a business perspective, the multiverse allows for a whole swathe of characters and potential merch that:
    1. are incredibly easily created, since you just need to come up with a variant of "[already popular character] but [X]"
    2. allow for easy diversity and demographic targeting
    3. means you can pull from previous films or stories without having to do all the hard work yourself (like the MCU has done with their recent cameos in Multiverse of Madness and No Way Home)

      >though Marvel started dabbling in it in the 80s.

Way earlier than that. the 70s was when the Avengers ended up in the Squadron Supreme's world for the first time, and then came What If.

Multiverses usually work when done right and it's pretty clear that they're not being handled right since at least the 2010s. They finally figured out the business potential of it, but got too greedy, too fast.

Hypothetical Stardust The Super Wizard multiverse stories would probably be made more hilarious if he is the ONLY Stardust and he serves "justice" across the multiverse.

Shared universes were just a sales technique. You advertise Gay Boy Comics in Bumfrick Comics by having Gay Boy guest star in Captain Bumfrick's story. Editors would eventually toy with the idea of pushing things further - crossover issues where you have to buy Bumfrick Comics #137 in order to read the end of the story in Gay Boy Comics #51. The more you integrate and intertwine the stories, the more you push your completist fans to buy across your line.
Multiverses are just a natural outgrowth of this process. Parallel universes are an old concept in science fiction, and present a quick and easy way to crossover properties which should not reasonably coexist in the same world.
