Homer hasn't been a "good character" since "The Computer Wore Menace Shoes". Maybe "Simple Simpson" if we're being generous.

homer was literally a subversion of the classic patriarch dad who was the firm leader of the family
it was interesting because homer was everything the ideal dad was not, and contrasted with his bouts of genuine sincerity when he could push his gluttony and sloth aside
he was, effectively, a more realistic and nuanced take on a father figure, with virtues that occasionally rise past his vices

You guys might too zoomer to know, but for a long time since the early dawn of Television, most TV sitcoms and TV shows had strong male role models and a lot of "Father Knows Best" that embodied the whole 1950's 'strong father' archtype. You had "Leave it to Beaver", and even to the 70's and early 80's with Full House and Cosby Show, etc.

In the 1980's-1990's you had the beginning of a reversal, a kind of rejection of that- with doltish dads, and absolutely negative portrayal- from dolts like Homer, to sadsack pathetic like "Married With Children", and beyond, almost every Sitcom post 90's and most animated TV shows showcased fathers as pathetic. It's a rejection/anger based reversal from the Boomer/Post Boomer crowds of their 'overbearing' fathers from the 40's.

It wont likely snap back to good, strong parental rolemodels. Everyone's still rebelling againts authority and paternal figures.

      >It wont likely snap back to good, strong parental rolemodels.

It's pretty much a universal rule in all TV shows that father figures are dumb and weak and all mothers are wise and strong. This has been with us since sitcoms were a thing. Not sure if it's a case of art imitating life or life eventually imitating art.

Francine and Stan are actually a really good married couples.

Francine outright says she doesn't want to work and rather have everything given to her, and doesn't mind cooking for Stan.

Stan is the breadwinner, but makes terrible decisions which usually Francine has to fix or at least tell Stan he's wrong.

Or sometime they both equally go 100% on a stupid idea. Like fairly odd parents they're two halves of a whole idiot.
