Based. Every summer I told employers I just graduated high school and wasn’t even thinking about college. They were so fricking mad when mid August came around and there was nothing they could do, couldn’t even fire me until they hired a replacement.

Western society is collapsing due to an over inflated job market caused by competition from immigrants. You’re better off leaving the sinking ship and getting a job in another country.

I got a job as a civil engineer in Brazil and I’m ten times happier.

I was just trying to fit in with the /misc/ tards here.
Although fault can definitely be placed on immigrants as they’re the ones that gave employers the motivation to easily exploit their workers since they had no hang-ups working the worst jobs imaginable.

This isn’t a problem in Brazil since most people here are much more inclined to “work to live” rather than “live to work” so work life balance is way better.

tl;dr Since they’re okay with working for 13 hours straight in some shitty warehouse, now everyone has to. If they just had standards and quit these exploitative, predatory jobs, it wouldn’t be a problem.

It varies wildly based on the job. Doctors aren't going to lose much pay if there are a bunch of immigrant doctors coming in. Hell doctors usually gain more options with more doctors since it means more hospitals can be open and you dont have to have to have one super hospital for 6 small rural towns. Meanwhile food services historically get lower wages due to immigration, barring right now because we don't have the people for all the food service jobs that are needed. Factories are interesting since more immigration with less pay means you can keep costs down and keep factories in the US, but removing immigration means they outsource to Mexico or whatever.

                >No one learns plumbing to have a good time and “solve the puzzle” or whatever the frick
But most successful programmers learn it either to get something done (if they're scientists/engineers) or because they enjoy it.

I made a few concentrated efforts to learn code but it mostly just "happened" on its own as I took various school and hobby projects that involved code. Had fun in programming 101 class, then wanted to mess around with machine learning so picked up python, then fricked around with arduinos, automated some shit with PLCs, started writing python scripts to solve various issues I was having, etc.

I don't think anyone who doesn't naturally enjoy programming can just sit down and decide "I'm gonna learn web development" from scratch, and be good at it. You'll want to fricking have a nice day

I get this feeling as well now.

After all my time learning I've realised the actual end result is just cobbling libraries together and writing miscellaneous javascript for a finance application. Programming for a job sucked all the fun out of programming for me.

Now I'm in some shitty tech support role and the only programming I do is game mods, stupid discord bots and small productivity things in Python

            Anonymous

well for me personally, the more challenging it is, the more fun i'm having. i think full stack web dev work might honestly be a bit boring if you're only just doing the same bullshit busywork for a bunch of websites no one gives a frick about. that's where most programmers end up, and it's not a really good place to be since a lot of those jobs will get automated away in the long run.

personally i love designing complex systems, identifying possible threats & problems with them, and generally doing work that requires me to be smart and shit. i don't want my job to be too leisurely

Good point. I don’t want to have to stare at a monitor all day. But I guess I’m doing that anyway.

for me it's the opposite honestly, i hate touching grass or dealing with people for too long

Web dev is boring to me. the JS ecosystem is terrible, and JS promotes bad habits esp with lack of type safety. OOP or Python is more marketable and less autistic for beginners. No I don't find programming fun per se. Engineers cant explain for shit. Errors and docs are can be super cryptic and frustrating if you're impatient

        >I got a job as a civil engineer in Brazil and I’m ten times happier.
I'm a civil engineer in the US. I can't blame you for going to Brazil

It was a nightmare trying to get an actual engineering job. Thankfully I got a comfy work from home one but it took a year to get after finishing college.
Places now want you to have your FE passed when applying (despite saying it's optional) and alot are starting programs where new hires "rotate" through various departments/assignments (eg: field, water, transmission, distribution, etc). Fortunately when I was hired they told me I could do a rotation program or simply be hired on as a regular employee so I opted for normal employee. But it's clear places are trying to make it so they can jump you around contantly to where they have work

In a way covid has been a blessing though cause it's meant companies are struggling to hire people/keep people so they've bumped up pay and are trying to bring more people in which makes it a little easier vs 3 years ago imo.

          Anonymous

That's how all engineering work is becoming. The internet basically destroyed most local and regional firms and most design work can be copy pasted.

            Anonymous

Yep and that's what we do.
            >go look at Xs document and base it off of that
            >hey reuse this from this project, that way we can reuse the drawings, materials, etc and not have to do alot of work designing something new
I get why they do it and I don't blame them for telling us to.

No idea if regional firms are dwindling or not. I do work for an international company and they do seem to be hiring more than the local places so it wouldn't surprise me if the smaller places are struggling for work vs the big ones

Why would higher educated whites want to take this shit cleaning jobs? This argument works in favor both sides. Let the immigrants take up all the undesirable labor and the rest is left for those with an education.
Unfortunately, whites bullshitted themselves into thinking they actually want those jobs. The result was equal pay whether you working at McDonalds or working as a legal assistant.

usually bad at budgeting and doesn't get the increased commute costs, plus lack of productivity, but might be offset with family kinda stuck somewhere

Whats a bullshit job that requires 2-3 hours of real work while the rest of the day you just dick around on the internet? Specifically, one that makes 80k a year.

if you're american or canadian should look at train jobs in the rural west
you wont have a life outside work because you're on call and don't expect any single women around

No, I'm not trolling. I applied to about 200-300 places in that period, in a range of specialties that I had skills and experience in - mechanical engineering, industrial controls, software. Eventually I did get a job, half way through my master's degree - as a webdev codemonkey. So it was more like 16 months, really - though I wasn't job searching as actively after I went back to school.

Depends on field, country, the quality of your CV, anything you've done beyond your degree itself (year in industry, personal projects you CAN share) and plain luck.
For me, UK, computing science, it's been 5 years. The jobs advertise entry level but they always demand and only accept those with experience or those who make a machine learning pet project in their spare time instead of disengaging from the computer when the job's finished.
Unless it's agency work that demands me to travel internationally with 2 day's notice and sign on for 2 years minimum that reserves the right to fire me if they either have no client or do not want to send me to a client. Oh and it pays only a couple of grand more than minimum.

7 months and ~300 applications here.
Now I have a good job and life is literally easymode, a fricking whiplash from last year.

Here are some tips, you're gonna need it:
          >If you reach an interview stage but still get rejected, tank the ego punch and reach out and ask for the reasoning why another candidate got chosen over you. Learn from it when possible (example: they had this skill you didnt), reee when not (example: they had more experience lmao).

          >I liked youtube channels of: https://www.youtube.com/c/ALifeAfterLayoff for general career stuff.

          >And:https://www.youtube.com/c/CassThompsonCareerAdvice/videos for specific interview prep.

Forgot to mention but always request interview feedback in email form.

then you can first read it, reee and go "THAT IS NOT TRUE AT ALL YOU FRICKING REETARDS", cool off and then read it objectively with a calm head.

If you have to lie about having an education just to get a job, do it. Work anywhere: fast food, janitor, security, whatever. The point is to show you are EMPLOYABLE. From there, climb the ladder.

The team members I manage are making 5 to 10 times as much as me because they failed upwards with their degrees while I’m degreeless and do the job of a senior engineer for minimum wage. If I quit it’s back to the warehouse so it’s not like I have a choice.

Too dumb for that. I tried college for Mechanical Engineering before and couldn’t get past the second year. It’s not the same context at all, in a company you need results, in college you learn how to do things. I’ve only reached this position because my only talent is thinking outside the box which works wonders in a very rigid field of work (telecommunications).

... Once you have years experience of a job. You can lie about having a college degree. They won't check that only check your current boss as a reference and they won't ask about college just your dude.

          Learn to israelite the system
          Don't be a goy boy

I tried the fake degree before, even made a forgery thanks to a former classmate but they ended up calling the head of department at the university.
Plus HR services can easily tell I don’t have one because the way I currently pay for retirement pension (mandatory here) clearly shows I don’t have an exec/engineer status despite having the position of one.

I remember some years back when I was really struggling with finding a job my mom made me meet with one of our pastors about doing some volunteer work for my resume and getting advice from him. I respect the guy, but it became really obvious how out of touch he was with the job market when he told me I needed to approach employers looking to do anything, like show up every day offering to take out trash and get coffee. No modern employer wants to deal with that shit and I can't afford to drive to the city every day just to effectively harass a potential employer.

the reason it's not like it once was is actually because of university products with lots of read books to their name but zero real world experience at anything kicked off about it.

I recently tried to move within the same company to the same role at a different location, I had to do the full interview process because I need an arbitrary score on a series of arbitrary questions over several interviews which I'd already answered when I got the job originally or else it's violating some kind of workplace law.

HR departments just enforce government policy and the government protects their investment opportunities (university fees, student debts, patronage)

If you cannot purchase a basic life necessity that your father could at his age for less pay, then you are actually being paid LESS than him.
The official inflation figure making exceptions is why everyone pretends it's not as bad as it actually is.

              >isn't it obvious
No, you don't get it. Prices fluctuate all the fricking time. Some items go up, others go down. CPI is based on a large number of items that make up a typical consumer's necessities. Arguably rent/mortgage should be included in it, but even if you did, housing prices would still outpace inflation by a huge deal. Housing is going up in price faster than money is going down in value, and by a lot. You might be able to afford a lot more in anything other than housing and still not have enough for the same house.

                >Prices fluctuate all the fricking time. Some items go up, others go down.
Everything has gone up for decades. The only time they don't is when the quality or quantity goes down to compensate.
                >Arguably rent/mortgage should be included
                >housing prices would still outpace inflation

                >You might be able to afford a lot more in anything other than housing
Housing. Is. A. Typical. Consumer. Necessity.
Everyone has to live somewhere. Modern first world society does not like favelas and shanty towns. It detests the homeless and merely tolerates gypsies. The only reason to not admit there's hyperinflation is that it'd break the backs of most of the political classes and plutocrats if property problems were addressed.

                >Everything has gone up for decades.
Yes, that's a natural consequence of money supply INFLATION

The point is that the prices of housing go up MUCH faster than the prices of almost everything else, and the price of any individual item might go up or down at any given time, they just all move up on average.

Jesus frick, pay attention in econ 101. That anon can make more money - in purchasing power adjusted terms - than his dad, while still not being able to afford housing. Same as money doesn't become worthless every time some one of a kind item gets destroyed and is no longer available on the market (its price becomes infinite)

We fired that guy. He tried to sue, I just sent a letter back to his attorney saying we reject his request for a settlement and then never heard back. EEOC didn't grant a right to sue, so that was the end of that. That's usually how it goes, the majority of complaints go nowhere. It's a lot of busywork, but my old job paid for my two graduate degrees and my parents are paying for my PhD, so it all works out.

I'm a late-30s millennial with well-to-do baby boomer parents. I doubt there's much about my life that's relatable to most, I fit into a weird category of people. I behave and look more like a Gen Xer, but my parents refused to engage in nepotism to get me a job despite occupying leadership positions in large corporations. When I look at available labor market data, I believe half of men in my age bracket are either unemployed, out of the workforce entirely, or chronically underemployed.

Amusingly enough, the career trajectory of men is not just flat-lining but it's starting to dip. Pic related is old data and is for men age 25-54. The percentage of men with at least a bachelor's degree not-participating, which means they've been out of work so long that the federal government no longer considers them to be employable ever again, is likely now closer to 25% and maybe higher. We don't get those exact numbers in the released employment statistics.

This is why the government considers white males and domestic terrorism the most dangerous threat to America. These numbers are gonna get worse.

          >The percentage of men with at least a bachelor's degree not-participating
Yeah it's also why they have a bachelor's... because it reduces the meat market by a decent percentage, so there's less competition over the lack of jobs and there's still money flying around the system even if it's government money.

It's a legit fricking concern that we in current year +7 must still play these weird politeness/suck-up games to get a job.
They know I need a job for money, I know they know, they know I know they know. Stop playing fricking games, it's bullshit.

      Yep interviews are annoying
Only ways to get better unfortunately are to either do them via trial and error or get on glass door or something where people say what questions they were asked for a job. And even then it's formal bs and you can get nit picked and cast aside on the tiniest thing, including "what do you do in your free time".

Easy one in response to do you have any questions is what does a great employee her look like, beyond just showing up every day.

Yes I know what you mean, surroundings have no clutter or feel like they have been properly lived in or contain objects specifically picked out by certain characters. The reason for this is that set design is dying/dead art seen as an area where costs can be safely cut, just like most writing departments nowadays. Low/no budget = low/no effort. Everything nowadays is streamlined to how cheaply it can be done. Even big budget movies just buy off the shelf power tools and spray paint them to look like alien tools.l instead of designing and crafting it from the ground up.

starting a new job tonight after years of NEETdom in an aluminum foundry. apparently it's going to be very hot and dirty. 15.50 an hour with 40 hour weeks and consistent overtime which will get me 31 an hour.

Your health is the only thing you actually own in this world and companies will shamelessly take it from you while paying you pennies.

Companies have certain safety requirements they have to meet (including doing safety training) per OSHA (federal government agency)

If they don't bail. If they do, just watch out for your butt, get some experience, and then get a better job once you have experience on your resume. Having no experience is a killer most places

If it's too hard for you and only 15 an hour and they aren't increasing your pay keep a lookout for other places in a few months once you have some job experience. Some warehouses pay more than that but over time likely won't be as good

The one I just took a job at is a bigger liquor store and the delivery drivers do the stocking themselves.

You sound like a dupe if you took on a bunch of work and responsibility for zero pay, especially if you were "doing the most work" at the place. Kind of sounds like people smarter than you realized what a moron you were and took advantage of you. They made you their minimum wage slave.
If you're making minimum wage you do the minimum work. That's fair. Go in stoned, go in drunk, play games on your phone, and if you lose your minimum wage job, guess what, nobody cares, you can just go next door and get ten more.

No one in line? Sweep the floors. Floors are clean? Clean the combs. Combs are clean? Make warm towels. Towels are done? Fold the laundry. Laundry is done? Go do another batch.

Things will get shittier thanks to people that exploit honest folks. The fact you laugh along with them is part of the problem. You'll likely die screaming during the collapse when that honest man has lost it and leaves you out to die.

                Anonymous

You're not "honest folk." You're an idiot who works like a slave for peanuts.
Honest folk are fair, and if you pay an honest person minimum wage, they'll give you minimum effort as a result because that's a fair trade.
You say I'm part of the problem, but you're the one letting yourself be exploited, and when guys like me tell you to stop, you get all defensive and refuse to stop letting yourself be cheated. You know what, though? Not my problem. That's your problem. And if you want to keep having that problem, by all means, don't listen to me. Keep letting people cheat you and rip you off. It doesn't affect me at all.

It's all exploitation. Your line of thinking just makes it so from top to bottom it's all just people using each other. Guess what happens to a society no longer founded on good will and virtue?

                Anonymous

It's exploitation when one person is getting more than they're pay/are paid for. If you're getting paid billions and doing nothing, that's exploitation. If you're getting paid nothing and doing everything, that's exploitation.
The solution is to not participate in the exploitation. You do the amount of work equivalent to your pay. If you're paid minimum wage, guess what, that's not a lot of work. That's you playing phone games while customers wait money. That's fair.

Because pay does not correspond to effort in any way. Honest people are dependable and are capable of being elevated into positions of trust because you know where they stand. Treat them like shit and they'll leave. Get a shitty worker and you'll get customer complaints, same if they do the minimum.

Tell me, do you want the person who is just barely there and does the absolute minimum or the person you know you can trust and goes out of their way to make sure things are nice?

Guys I'm scared. Even with three incomes, my family can't afford a place. We're staying some extended family but they made it clear we have to be out by August. I have no standards about where I live, but I need a car to get to work. Mom has standards of where to live, and has a car. She "needs" a minimum 2/2 so she can have her own bathroom. I've been sleeping on a couch since 2017 so I don't need a room, that would be for the third person. Rent is fricking insane, $2200 minimum without utilities, but you still need first/last and deposit

Sounds like something's getting exaggerated here, but with three incomes you should be able to take out a loan, or get some credit cards to put necessities on and use the cash for first/last month and deposit. Or consider moving to a cheaper COL area, or both.

Ok guys, i have a problem and need your help.
I completed a degree in CompSci as part of a program between a company and a university. The deal is that they pay me a nice salary so I dont have to take out a loan or work to complete the degree, and also teach me stuff for a few weeks per year. My part is that I have to work for them for 4 years after i complete my degree.
However, shit changed and I don't want to work there anymore. If I quit I have to pay back 30k euros. The longer I work there, the less I have to pay. So I could suck it up like a man and fulfill my part of the deal and work there for some time saving money and then quit and pay back the rest with what I saved. OR I could frick off and be 30k in debt.

i'd only leave if i had another, really solid job lined up. if you find it intolerable and you feel trapped then you should try to leave though. imo keeping my mental health intact is more important to me than money. that said i live in a socialist paradise so there's no way i could ever become homeless so maybe that's bad advice

also you didn't ask but i wouldn't frick around too much for that remaining time because then your only reference is at a place that doesn't like you
