It varies wildly based on the job. Doctors aren't going to lose much pay if there are a bunch of immigrant doctors coming in. Hell doctors usually gain more options with more doctors since it means more hospitals can be open and you dont have to have to have one super hospital for 6 small rural towns. Meanwhile food services historically get lower wages due to immigration, barring right now because we don't have the people for all the food service jobs that are needed. Factories are interesting since more immigration with less pay means you can keep costs down and keep factories in the US, but removing immigration means they outsource to Mexico or whatever.

But most successful programmers learn it either to get something done (if they're scientists/engineers) or because they enjoy it.
I made a few concentrated efforts to learn code but it mostly just "happened" on its own as I took various school and hobby projects that involved code. Had fun in programming 101 class, then wanted to mess around with machine learning so picked up python, then fricked around with arduinos, automated some shit with PLCs, started writing python scripts to solve various issues I was having, etc.
I don't think anyone who doesn't naturally enjoy programming can just sit down and decide "I'm gonna learn web development" from scratch, and be good at it. You'll want to fricking have a nice day

After all my time learning I've realised the actual end result is just cobbling libraries together and writing miscellaneous javascript for a finance application. Programming for a job sucked all the fun out of programming for me.
Now I'm in some shitty tech support role and the only programming I do is game mods, stupid discord bots and small productivity things in Python
well for me personally, the more challenging it is, the more fun i'm having. i think full stack web dev work might honestly be a bit boring if you're only just doing the same bullshit busywork for a bunch of websites no one gives a frick about. that's where most programmers end up, and it's not a really good place to be since a lot of those jobs will get automated away in the long run.
personally i love designing complex systems, identifying possible threats & problems with them, and generally doing work that requires me to be smart and shit. i don't want my job to be too leisurely

It was a nightmare trying to get an actual engineering job. Thankfully I got a comfy work from home one but it took a year to get after finishing college.
Places now want you to have your FE passed when applying (despite saying it's optional) and alot are starting programs where new hires "rotate" through various departments/assignments (eg: field, water, transmission, distribution, etc). Fortunately when I was hired they told me I could do a rotation program or simply be hired on as a regular employee so I opted for normal employee. But it's clear places are trying to make it so they can jump you around contantly to where they have work
In a way covid has been a blessing though cause it's meant companies are struggling to hire people/keep people so they've bumped up pay and are trying to bring more people in which makes it a little easier vs 3 years ago imo.

No, I'm not trolling. I applied to about 200-300 places in that period, in a range of specialties that I had skills and experience in - mechanical engineering, industrial controls, software. Eventually I did get a job, half way through my master's degree - as a webdev codemonkey. So it was more like 16 months, really - though I wasn't job searching as actively after I went back to school.
Depends on field, country, the quality of your CV, anything you've done beyond your degree itself (year in industry, personal projects you CAN share) and plain luck.
For me, UK, computing science, it's been 5 years. The jobs advertise entry level but they always demand and only accept those with experience or those who make a machine learning pet project in their spare time instead of disengaging from the computer when the job's finished.
Unless it's agency work that demands me to travel internationally with 2 day's notice and sign on for 2 years minimum that reserves the right to fire me if they either have no client or do not want to send me to a client. Oh and it pays only a couple of grand more than minimum.

It’s not the same context at all, in a company you need results, in college you learn how to do things. I’ve only reached this position because my only talent is thinking outside the box which works wonders in a very rigid field of work (telecommunications).
I tried the fake degree before, even made a forgery thanks to a former classmate but they ended up calling the head of department at the university.
Plus HR services can easily tell I don’t have one because the way I currently pay for retirement pension (mandatory here) clearly shows I don’t have an exec/engineer status despite having the position of one.

I remember some years back when I was really struggling with finding a job my mom made me meet with one of our pastors about doing some volunteer work for my resume and getting advice from him. I respect the guy, but it became really obvious how out of touch he was with the job market when he told me I needed to approach employers looking to do anything, like show up every day offering to take out trash and get coffee. No modern employer wants to deal with that shit and I can't afford to drive to the city every day just to effectively harass a potential employer.

Spent a week busting my ass learning a program I wasn't familiar with for a second interview that never seemed to come. I'm a late-30s millennial with well-to-do baby boomer parents. I doubt there's much about my life that's relatable to most, I fit into a weird category of people. I behave and look more like a Gen Xer, but my parents refused to engage in nepotism to get me a job despite occupying leadership positions in large corporations. When I look at available labor market data, I believe half of men in my age bracket are either unemployed, out of the workforce entirely, or chronically underemployed.
Amusingly enough, the career trajectory of men is not just flat-lining but it's starting to dip. Pic related is old data and is for men age 25-54. The percentage of men with at least a bachelor's degree not-participating, which means they've been out of work so long that the federal government no longer considers them to be employable ever again, is likely now closer to 25% and maybe higher. We don't get those exact numbers in the released employment statistics.
This is why the government considers white males and domestic terrorism the most dangerous threat to America. These numbers are gonna get worse.

I have my first office job, it's pretty taxing having to answer phones for 7.5 hours and lie. My trainer literally said "most of this job is apologizing to people" so it's customer service with a bit better pay and not cleaning the toilet. At least in fast food I could talk to coworkers, now it's just me and upset customers.
I'm gonna try to use this as experience for some other job, because I don't even think this would be tolerable when they say I can start work from home, which they encourage.

The two different ones I've worked at in the past were mom and pop joints, the delivery driver brought all the boxes in and formed a big stack at some designated area inside the store, and then it's on you to put them on the shelves and the rest in back stock. The one I just took a job at is a bigger liquor store and the delivery drivers do the stocking themselves.

Anybody have experience working in a Nuclear facility? I live relatively close to one (probably narrows down where I live) and they have job openings with suspiciously low requirements for some jobs that pay really well.

Ok guys, i have a problem and need your help.
I completed a degree in CompSci as part of a program between a company and a university. The deal is that they pay me a nice salary so I dont have to take out a loan or work to complete the degree, and also teach me stuff for a few weeks per year. My part is that I have to work for them for 4 years after i complete my degree.
However, shit changed and I don't want to work there anymore. If I quit I have to pay back 30k euros. The longer I work there, the less I have to pay. So I could suck it up like a man and fulfill my part of the deal and work there for some time saving money and then quit and pay back the rest with what I saved. OR I could frick off and be 30k in debt.
i'd only leave if i had another, really solid job lined up. if you find it intolerable and you feel trapped then you should try to leave though. imo keeping my mental health intact is more important to me than money. that said i live in a socialist paradise so there's no way i could ever become homeless so maybe that's bad advice
