their houses were STILL cheaper proportionally than it is now. And their kids worked. And their parents left things for their kids instead of selling it off to blackrock. And they could, and did, start businesses because they weren't priced out of it due to government intervention (yes, during the great depression.)

The Great Depression was worse than now because the poorer infrastructure made it hard to literally eat, but in many ways, we live in a more oppressive time now.

We've endeavoured to accept and conquer this shit since Epictetus. Eating only junkfood will ruin your taste. Spending all day in bed will make you tired and lazy. "True Love" will always fade, because it too is chemical.
Understand that these things are not magical and do not replenish infinitely, that's the only way you can learn to sustain them by practicing in discipline and self-awareness.

It's a matter of perspective. I'm fascinated by the way human perspective works and the difference that language makes in your worldview. This is the best example
          >Chemical reactions in my brain have caused an attraction towards you with the purpose of procreation
you're using a scientific and mechanical language to describe a human emotion. You're dehumanizing yourself and describing your subjectivity as nothing more than a meat machine following its programming. On the other hand
          >I LOVE you
describes the same thing but uses a term that brings your mind to a subjective realm. The word love already forces you to explore your feelings. It's a word that has countless meanings and different shades, forcing YOU to make choices. It might remind you of a poem you read, a romantic movie, a nice dinner in a classy restaurant or a passionate night of sex.
While the pursuit of knowledge and truth is a noble goal applying it to human subjectivity is dangerous and one of the reason our modern society is utterly filled with despair and a lack of meaning.

      the real reason though
      >love is just chemicals

like everything else in that poorly written show, it's just a reference/call back. love being chemicals was a meme phrase from the 80s/90s when pop science was taking off. Pretending to be hyper rational and breaking down thechemical process that we describe love was a way to downplay human relationships. But the reason roland remembered it is probably because it was used in bioshock 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=al-CSN0Mn00

Love is like having to regularly care about taking care of things. Many experience motivation and think it will change things but without motivation leading to discipline then motivation will lead to nowhere since motivation is temporary unlike discipline which forces to achieve and love is the same like this that's why you see many older couple in love like they actually work on their marriage and A LOT of them still frick despite being around 80 years old gross.

You see, in the first season this whole ultra scientific mind thing was just a joke. Rick fricked up constantly and acted like he's a genius who knows everything but he's clearly insane. In this very episode for all his confidende in his science he ends up destroying the world. In later season they treat this trait of Rick's personality at face value "he's le science god" and its so cringe.

This. He got wasted and tried to nuke the planet in the first scene of the first episode. In the episode in OP he destroys humanity and just makes it progressively worse with each attempt to fix it.

Also he's clearly just bitter about his wife being wiped out of every reality.

The chemical reaction part is true though. There's no "one true love". There's no "soulmates". You think someone's hot, then you frick. If you can tolerate being around them, maybe you love each other, maybe you stick together. Maybe somebody cheats, maybe you get divorced. Maybe one of you dies. He's completely correct though. The ideal marriage is one where the initial romantic love is replaced by platonic love for your spouse. So even after the "magic" is gone and you no longer want to bang each other's brains out with every spare moment, you still care about one another and want to live together.

Rick's just a depressed misanthrope so of course he thinks that marriage is pointless All his long-lasting relationships are founded on unhealthy dependencies rather than genuine platonic love that he can be honest about.
