I assume one of the big motivators was merchandising. They probably had to be careful when doing splash mountain merch due to not wanting to associate it too much with the movie. This version won't have that issue and it'll be easier and safer to market.

        Anonymous

I mean Splash Mountain Merch still probably sold incredibly well. Most people had no idea what Soung of the Sourh was and probably never connected Briar Bear, Fox, and Rabbit with the movie

I haven't been to Disney in over a decade, but they were in rough shape when I was there in 2010. I've watched a few YT videos that have been documenting how frequently the animatronics keep breaking down at Disneyland and it's definitely getting more and more frequent. It makes sense though, the animatronics are old and most of them are re-skinned from America Sings.

As for the renovation, I'm torn. On one hand, I have a lot of nostalgia for Splash Mountain and I love the old school animatronics. Plus, there's just something so great about the finale with Zip-a-dee-doo-da. On the other hand, I can see Disney's point of view. The animatronics are frequently breaking down, and Song of the South is far from an IP that kids know. It's just dated all around. I think PatF makes sense as it keeps the Southern charm of current Splash Mountain. Plus, I can see the potential for some cool effects if they include Facilier and his voodoo.

I think committing to a full name change isn't wise.

I'm a little confused here, did Princess and the Frog get a Megamind situation recently where no one gave a shit about it when it first released but it has a resurgence in popularity because of nostalgia and memes?

There are people who like it, we just aren't loud enough (and the people who went "no one cares!!" or "she's a frog for most of the film, that's racist!!" were louder) so Disney went "oh guess nobody cares then, lets shut down the 2D animation department." Nope there's barely anything in the film to Meme.

They did have that Augmented Reality game in the parks a few years back. But that's it.

      Anonymous

I'm not sure if it ever had a bad reputation, it mostly just had the issue that Disney hadn't been making popular films for a while when it came out. I don't think this is a case of them wanting a princess and the frog ride and more than likely they wanted to get rid of the song of the south theming and this was the easiest movie to replace it with, as well as putting more diversity in the parks.

I'm not sure why, I can't explain it, but for some reason it has always bothered me that the fact that these characters are deeply routed in black American history has been swiftly swept under the rug and ignored. They're not something Disney made. They were stories crafted by black slaves, inspired by African culture, and pushed onto white people later on by abolitionists as a way to make them sympathetic to slaves. They played an important role in our nation's history but like anything related to black culture (Such as many elements from blacksplotation films) they've been deemed racist and undesirable by people that just won't come to terms with the fact that it's just how black people acted during that snippet of history. Characters and works like this are a window into that timeframe and the culture of the people who lived there. It just rubs me the wrong way.

Erase them from Splash Mountain, whatever, but I wish we'd stop pretending like these characters aren't black American history but instead some vile creation of the white man to make black people look bad.

When I said I wanted more Princess and the Frog, this was not it. They need to pump her Disney Princess brand more. Japan doesn't even accept her as a princess and I can't blame them.

She needs a cartoon series first, maybe some extra material like more comics or books for kids. Even a needless Disney sequel would show she's validated.

Otherwise she's one of the weakest Disney princesses and it'd have been better to use Ariel. You know, the fish princess with a water theme.

      Anonymous

From what I understand, the main argument in favor PatF was that they could reuse the America Sings animals, which was also the main reason they kept putting of a retheme because the Imagineers are really attached to those things for some reason. Are they even still doing that?

It's the only medium where the phrase "You're destroying my childhood" isn't completely wrong.

Also while Splash is based on old film IP, people latch onto the Disney parks's original concepts since they tend to be well executed little adventures in genres that the animation studio either rarely touches or has had trouble doing something successful with it. Like Haunted Mansion mogs pretty much any Disney spooky thing that's been made ever since and if the film studio's attempts at adapting it weren't so shitty and human focused, it could easily overtake Nightmare Before Christmas's fandom.
