Did you watch Donna for Bae Suzy?

      kek you got filtered
Doona is the perfect drama to filter brainlets because the overt ending is "duh duh they broke up and they never get back together"

While the actual ending shown in pre/post scenes is that they got back together and kept their relationship a secret

this is headcanon. the guy doesnt make any sense while Doona serves him with a silver platter

The series ends with them in japan at the same hotel

In the pre/post credit scenes you see each one passing some train tracks in the middle of nowhere, with signs in japanese

Then they meet alone in some park wearing the same things they were wearing at the convention where the series ended

This is quite literally the opposite of "headcanon". It's literally shown to you

I might be late to the party with this but I'm pretty sure all kdramas have bitter endings. I've seen about 6 now and none of them have ever had a perfectly "happy" ending. Maybe it's a cultural thing.

The whole reason why I like korean movies is because a lot of them have non-happy endings. It's a refreshing contrast to Hollywood where 9/10 movies must have a "and they lived happily ever after" ending.

I just watched this show a month or so ago and loved it so much. Its going to hurt to watch something like this again after this guy's death. It's the same way that Robin Williams offing himself really made his movies sting since a lot of them were sentimental/emotional and the sadness of how it ended for these guys adds a very depressing tone to something like that.

    >Why are revenge and/or bullying a popular plot in Korean stories?

    1. Historical reasons, they were buttfricked by Japan and China. There's kind of a built in resentment and desire for revenge in the culture.

    2. Like many Asian countries, their society to this day is really old fashioned and kind of odd in many ways. Just like in many other Asian countries, there is a big focus on maintaining social cohesion in society. It is very hierarchical, but also at the same time super competetive. Historically the government has also been oppressive. You have to listen and respect to people older than you, it's built into the culture, into the language etc. Even if your "superior" (for example boss, big brother, whatever) is a dumbass, you still have to listen to them and obey because they are older. Lots of repression in the culture, individuality is still kind of frowned upon. If for whatever reason you don't fit into the "social cohesion" aspect, you are a pretty easy target for bullying etc. And because the culture is so much about hierarchy, respect etc. it is easy for bullies to take advantage of that. And in return that breeds lots of desire for revenge. The country itself is also a very odd mix of asian and western politics/capitalism, which just adds more fuel to the fire.

      >In short, after researching the meaning of revenge in Korean cinema for almost a year, I argue that we could explain the meaning of revenge in South Korean cinema in the following way: (1) as a means of catharsis to let loose of the vengeful emotions hidden in the everyday experience of han, (2) a more direct identification with this experience of han, as revenge in Korean cinema often seems impossible or unsatisfying and (3) a deconstruction of classical Western morality where there’s a clear distinction between good and evil.

i would say it is more because korean society is very hierarchical and has strong arbitrary social rules, so there is a lot of unfairness in life due to the cards you were dealt. so there is a lot of resentment because you have to kowtow to people because they are older/higher ranked/higher status/prettier. it is not egalitarian like the west is supposed to be. it is a nation of Persimmon Squashers to use a korean phrase.

Why these shows the bad guys have the thickest plot armor, literally could be immortal in a non supernatural procedural drama, literally all the country is on their side, but then in the last episode the shittiest unsustainable proof that wouldn't have worked in the previous 15 episodes suddenly stops them?
Also why bad guys are always moustache twirling evil? like they go way over their path to be evil even if that doesn't bring them any benefit and most of the time is actually detrimental. Why?

i wasn't talking about telling apart what nationality is what. i was wondering if you could tell the actors apart in these shows because apparently non-asians can't.

I sometimes have trouble, but most of the time I can do it just fine.

I sometimes have trouble, but most of the time I can do it just fine.

The harder part is keeping everyone's name straight, and I usually forget the characters' names soon after finishing the series.

asiatics all hate each other and themselves but are trapped in a world of competitive one-up-manship

itaewon class was based off a manhwa that was essentially a harem, which is why you got that feeling.
extracurricular (2020) also gives off that feeling although its less a harem feel and more bonnie and clyde
sweet home (2020) is based on a manhwa which you might like the feel of

      In 2023 I've watched:

      The Glory
It's Okay to not be ok
      Daily dose of sunshine
      My Name
      Mr Sunshine
      Juvenile Justice
      Crashlanding on you

And I liked all of them.

In the same time I've watched only a couple of western tv shows, and they were awful. More like hatewatching,

      You
      Rings of Power
      Marvel slop

the love period ends after 4-5 years and you notice the same patterns in kdramas
honestly its amazing to see new shows that are surprising and completely different from western TV. I just wish japan and/or other countries would up their game with live action tv.

you are mostly right, yet in 2023, we got a lot of unique kdramas which didn't recycle any existing storylines:

          >Bargain
          >Mask Girl
          Those two are 100% original

          >Moving
          >Song of the Bandits
          to a lesser extent

I can't think of any western tv show that was good, that I liked this year.

I still have yet to seen godzilla from apple, or the newest season of fargo.

My favorite k drama that I have seen this year are

        The Glory
        My Mister
        My Liberation notes
        Flower of Evil
        Mouse

its like to cheer you up or get hyped. they also talk about some personality test bs all the time to describe themselves. they're just moronic.

It's not. It's just that revenge films are the only Korean films that American plebs can digest. Which is why all plebs hated Parasite. Because it wasn't LE EBIN REVENGE XDDD. It's not a magical coincidence. You're just a pleb.
