It became the age where record companies started majorly sponsoring anime. Note that its in this time when opening lyrics were no longer about the titular robot, but were standalone pop songs sung by up and coming performers.
I mean I get the importance of shilling a stand alone single but I still wish they at least tried to make themes more specifically fitting the show anymore. Sometimes you get something thematically appropriate but a lot of the time it feels like you can just shuffle up your play list and it will fit just about any show. Doesn't help when so many of the animation sequences themselves are the same or stupidly similar too. Seriously If I had a nickle for every time I've seen friends walking home from school, looking up at the stars or standing by a tree I'd have like at least 27 dollars.
Can't believe Obari did all the key animation for this by himself. Wasn't this one of the first OPs where they did the animation to the song before hand? The way it matches up with the music is beat perfect.
The crispy mono quality of the tv edit actually makes the song better. Listening to the full version, it’s too clean and slick but the distorted, muddy and compressed OP version really makes the song feel that much more mysterious and intense.
>He has a YT channel where he plays some of his songs
He's shockingly lucid for a man of 84 years. Hope he keeps that good health for many more years. Still, I think he doesn't play 'Bad and Beautiful' nor 'Better Days Are Coming' there.
>Oh Carol >my calendar girl~ >you mean all the wo~rld >my little devil girl >Oh Carol >your sweet sixteens here >this happy birthday~ >it's hard to do, yes I fear >I'm breaking uuuup with you
You can thank the record companies sponsoring the anime studios since the 80s. Before that, /m/usic was a lot campier. Just listen to Boomer Goldrake's OP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tW8JKCouIA4
Personally, Z Toki wo Koete blows it out of the water. It is iconic Zeta.
Kino alert.
homosexual alert.
This whole OP feels like it's Gundam finally getting to do what it always wanted. This is where the series hit it's stride.

what is this trend of people not knowing how to fit "anymore" into a sentence?
i've seen this so many times, is it a zoomer thing?
How come modern mecha anime doesn't have a banging triumphant tune saying the robots names and his powers?
nah, the best mecha OP will always be Dragonar.

They don't make 'em like they used to.
