The label wouldn't be necessary if the rest of society treated gender and its roles as non-existant, beyond maybe a very mechanical "male-child input / female-child output" form of it (and, even then, with the possibility of artificial wombs and/or "converted" gametes, that might become obsolete too).
Because however gender in society is very real, even in progressive spaces ("toxic masculinity" of encouraging direct violence and masochism vs. "toxic femininity" encouraging manipulation and ostracism), there arise a need to say "I'm not partecipating in the gender I was given I much prefer the other one because it suits me best".
