Those are wide-brimmed hats associated with agricultural labor and plantations, not cowboy hats

This. You can't expect someone who's idea of the "remote" is the Poconos or Ojai to write realistically about flyover country.

Only Texas and the midwest are cowboy states. That's where the cattle drivers and the like were. Watch litrerally any piece of Western/cowboy media maybe, moron?

You're right in saying the Plains states are massively underrepresented in cowboy films but ranching was also huge in the Far West. The cowboy is practically Wyoming's state symbol ffs

The gunfight at the OK Corral literally happened in Tombstone, so Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada are easily Cowboy Country.
I see literal cowboys herding their cattle frequently on horseback when I’m out hunting on the ATV.

Midwesterners who dress like that are larpers. A kid wearing cowboy boots and Carhart is going to be answering emails for his dad's company (or changing into them after his shift at Menard's if he's not from money), the ones doing most of the ag work are either 70yo men or Mexicans wearing neon and tactical sombreros.

Don't see them much unless you go to a rodeo. Some dudes wear them to dress up without puttin on a suit but thats about it. It isn't super common, more a loose woman thing here.

To be fair, I live in Tennessee. And whenever we have a fair, there’s tons of tents of people trying to sell cowboy hats to tourists. I never see any local wearing them out of town though.

There's a little more to it than that. Cowboys weren't just ranch hands, they were the guys who drove cattle across the open country from ranches to the large markets, often hundreds of miles through hostile country. Very dangerous work.

Reminder that White people leaving California are, on average, more conservative than the residents of their new states. IIRC Alabama and Wyoming are the only exceptions. If they were libs they would just, y’know, stay in California.

One of the defining traits of liberals is that they don't connect their actions to the worsening of the world around them. They're more likely to think California is shit because of something Trump did and that Texas is just coincidentally a better place to live but could be made perfect by voting democrat once they get there.

The biggest mistake tv seems to make when it comes to cowboy hats is using straw hats during fall/winter. If it's cold almost everyone I know that wears them uses felt hats. You could probably use a light-colored felt hat during the summer though.

Is Atlanta or Houston the unofficial capital of the South?

Houston is the larger & wealthier city but Atlanta seems more emblematic of “the South”

Houston is the Western limit of "The South". Houston is close culturally to Louisiana, but Texas overall is more "West" than "South".

You may be confusing cowboy/outback hats with panama hats, or just that southerners are pretty well represented in western movies, the accent works well for the general backwater aesthetic, and the west was a frontier so almost everyone was from somewhere east.

    >Why are Southerners often depicted wearing cowboy hats when they are almost entirely a Western affect
Because no one that writes movies/tv lives in the south east. They're all trust fund nepo babies on the west coast that don't know anything about the real world.

Pick literally any state besides maybe somewhere in New England and you can find multiple counties worth of cowboy hat wearing hillbillies.
Hell, the entirety of central Pennsylvania is stereotypical hillbilly farm country where mullets and steer outnumber humans.
