Yes because it happens all the time. The internet has made it abundantly clear how attractive people are often some of the unhappiest, narcissistic and egotistical people because of social media. Constant praise can create monsters just as constant ostracization can, just different forms.
In truth its more about letting the treatment get to you and having expectations not met.
A big ugly guy who is kinda dumb will be more able to brush off negativity just by not noticing it than a big ugly smart guy. Then because people tend to mellow out as they age the dumb one who brushed everything off will just be happier individual who people will be more comfortable around while the smart one who was unable to endure becomes a jaded wreck which people don't want to be around.
