Chernobyl was a damn good show because this is the only complaint anyone ever has. We got real lucky it wasn't a fat black troony like it would be if it was made today.

I agree where were all the black Russian and Ukrainian scientists? At the start of the Russia/Ukraine war I saw tons of black Ukrainians fleeing to Germany on the news. Those train stations were packed!

Dyatlov was right about everything. The only reason things fricked up was because of the flaw in the reactor he didn't know about.

The worst thing is that Dyatlov wasn’t even a bad guy, he was a shit boss but not nearly as comically evil as the series. He even wrote a letter to Toptunov’s parents expressing condolences, saying that no parent should have to bury their child. It’s telling that one of the few cut scenes from the show is one of Dyatlov crying out for his dead son, as it would actually make you feel at least a small amount of sympathy for him.

More like Craig Mazin needed a Trump figure for everyone to rally around hating, despite it being contrary to the description of Dyatlov in Midnight In Chernobyl, which is where 90% of the source material for the show is ripped from.

Dyatlov is a completely tragic character in the series. He's rude and hard edged and does whatever is necessary to get ahead and then you discover he's purely a product of the way the system works and the disaster wasn't even his fault. Shit went over your head completely.

Same, it was obvious from episode 1 and had some black comedy to it because you can tell implicitly why he's like that and that he doesn't really have a choice

    artistic license + brevity, maybe
in Chernobyl's case, wasn't it combining two scientists from different cities into the one lady character? that reduces two intros and storylines down into one. and in a show with only 4 or 5 episodes that can save a lot of time for more important plot. then they slap on whatever gimmick/quirk she had to make her more interesting than those two real guys, can't remember. i do prefer the historical accuracy though

      >then they slap on whatever gimmick/quirk she had to make her more interesting

That explains why the one time she tries to do anything remotely brave or inspirational, she immediately gets arrested and Legasov has to bail her out of jail. Why lie when you know there are people on this board who have actually watched the show?

      Anonymous

as a consequence of Russia losing so many men during WW2, a high percentage of STEM graduates were women, her character is meant to distill the effort of those and other scientists into one person, a lot of licenses have been taken for this show, some things done for the sake of brevity, we never see Legasov's family, we are given wrong information about radioactivity to depict how it was perceived back then, the actors don't speak in russian accents to make their performance flow better, avoid silly sounds and take it more seriously.

This is all explained in the podcast as well, or even understood unless you want to be anal and take things literally, and or make a youtube video where you go "well AKTHUALLY"

I'd say that is easier to cast for talent you already know than scout in a foreign country but I am sure they explained their reasons as well.

Because otherwise you'd have twenty characters who each say a single line of dialogue.

        >Why spend five minutes every episode introducing a new random scientist character when we can just consolidate them into one person with a story we can follow?

they wouldn't have dialogue. just acknowledge them whilst making her the lead scientist

Emily Watson is a big get, and relegating her to one of many scientists defeats the object of hiring her in the first place

I had that feeling too but was willing to give it the benefit of the doubt, then while skipping through the credits I caught part of some commentary where they said one of the characters was "an amalgam" of real life people and of course it turned out to be her. It's the same as those two white lawyers who were combined to make one black woman lawyer for that one show also based on real life, I forget the name.
