It's a movie that's been on Disney+ for 4 years, I bet Disney will look at this and think people don't want to see movies in theatres any more and double down on streaming.

      Anonymous

No, this is the opposite. They're realizing streaming is hemmorhaging money because they can't make iconic characters and properties have no lasting power on it, so they're seeing if releasing it to theaters will help.

Miles Morales is even funnier when you compare his film incarnation to the one in the game, where he's 100% written by some fat white dyke and, despite being a black kid from Harlem, he spends time trying to help two homosexuals have gay sex with each other.

Were you homosexuals not here when it was talked about during its release? It's literally available on streaming and pretty much everyone already had their fill of it. >American audiences dying watch movies with black people
Why do morons keep parroting this when Eddie Murphy and Will Smith movie were guaranteed blockbusters? Americans love Black folk in movies, shows, music, sports etc. If anything Soul wasn't successful because the mc was just a regular dorky black dude and not Black persony enough.

        Anonymous

That's why they aren't successful with other blacks. Whites unironically don't care about that particular aspect and are fine with them acting not like stereotypes. Murphy did shit like Dr. Doolittle. It's blacks that only show up if the black actors act like deranged ebonics screeching fricking morons.

It was a direct response to how well shit like Birdman and Whiplash were doing. It's a great case study in why Pixar have been declining since Disney because it's such a surface level, trend-chasing take while Pixar was about trendsetting before.

Don't let your creative outlet become your life and define you. Don't forget to live your life because you're too invested in your art. That kind of shit.

            Anonymous

That’s my one gripe with Soul actually. I understand that message, but the main character is mostly unsatisfied with his life because he’s not getting to do his passion as a career.

              Anonymous

Yeah, that's a big problem with it. It's written by gen x and boomers for millennials and gen y. They have entirely different worldviews when it comes to work and hobbies. It's because these movies are written by marketing executive committees instead of the creators since Disney bought Pixar.

                Anonymous

Right, he’s so obsessed with his art because he wants to do it professionally. The story would make more sense if he was already an established jazz player that’s ignoring everything else in his life.

              Anonymous

But he's not unsatisfied with it by the end

                Anonymous

Right, but that’s because he finally got the opportunity to make his passion his career. The movie sort of misled me into thinking he would realize how being a good music teacher had positively impacted the lives of his students when he just thought of it as a side gig.

                Anonymous

I can't remember if that even happened. I thought he just went back to being a teacher at the end

                Anonymous

He successfully plays the show and gets offered a position as a band member which he accepts, but he realizes that’s not all there is to life. He’s still obviously much happier to take a professional music job than be a public school music teacher which was the main obstacle in his life to begin with. That’s why I think the message is a bit muddled.

watched it the other night with my mum
    the bad:
    >so much attention on animating musician's hands right they look creepy
    >anti religion with a gender bending god called Jerry
    >had a tumblr twitter quip about evil capitalism
    >another tumblr twitter quip about white women voices being annoying
    >unfunny family guy cutaway joke about mother teresa being pissed off in fake heaven
    >graham norton and richard ayoade doing their normal voices breaking immersion (probably because im a bong and they are on tv a lot)
    >ugly character design

    the good:
    >pretty scenes of an idealist vision of new york felt comfy, loved the scene with the falling sycamore seed
    >overall made me reflect on my life after watching it, imagined myself looking at highlights of my own life
    >i liked the jazz scene where he was trying out for the gig

a few of my bad points are coming from a biased political and religious perspective, but overall I would rate it a 6/10 as a film in that I don't regret watching it and I thought about it a little afterwards.
If character design was better, some voice acting was better, removed the quips - id give it a 7.5/10.

probably struggled because it looks like its a film for kids (pixar) but it was really targeted at millennial redditors
