commercials are everything now. i firmly believe that if there was a way to make you just sit and watch commercials, they wouldn't even bother with shows any more.
I have some old shows from the 70s and 80s. A 1hr show was anywhere from 45 to 50 minutes of the actual program. 12-15 minutes of ads per hour; 20-25% of the run time.
Looking at S24 of L&O SVU, the average run time (minus commercials) is down to 41 minutes per episode. Figure time for opening/closing credits, fade in/fade out, DUN DUN every few minutes, there's maybe 35-37 minutes of actual show there, tops.
That's a solid 1/3 of the hour-long slog of that already-boring piece of shit show that's nothing but commercials.
Why would anyone subject themselves to that?
I haven't watched it for like 7 years now. I don't even know why I still have it.
Radio is even worse. Used to be 5 or 8 or 10 songs, and a couple minutes of commercial. Now it's 1 song and 5 minutes of commercial.
I don't know when we, as a society, decided that everybody has to be advertised to everywhere at all times, but it's seriously fricked a lot of shit up.

Hulu is the fricking worst with its ads. It's normal for them to cut early rather than at the show's designated commercial break points then it completely throws off the ad timer so when it ends the show is back in progress and you've missed about a minute or two
        >just pirate
if I could I would, but several shows I watch don't get uploaded to torrent sites or if they do they're horribly encoded

For the last 10 maybe 15 years younger people have just been going to alternative sources for entertainment. The writing was on the wall when children stations had a massive drop in viewership and how older people in their mid to early 30s suddenly made up the bulk of their viewers.

When I was in college I didn’t even have cable and didn’t miss it a bit. Nowadays I turn on nbc when I get home from work at 11:30pm, mostly background noise so I’m not sitting in silence. If I’m a little buzzed and in just the right mood I’ll chuckle at Jimmy Fallon, SNL, maybe Seth Meyers. Usually some nice girls to look at if nothing else. my mom watches tv she hates streaming cause she doesn't want to pause the show she wants to get up during comercials its weird.

      Anonymous

I can see where she's coming from. If I can just pause whenever I'll likely not even come back to the episode sometimes. I'll leave it in a tab and forget about it. At least with a commercial I know I have a comfy 3 minutes to get back or else I'm missin it.

      Anonymous

Another thing about pausing a movie, is that usually the UI pops up and tells you the amount of time left in the movie, which can give unwanted hints about how the plot will be resolved. Of course, this could be fixed by just allowing for the UI to be changed. Also, if you know the runtime of what you are watching and are decent at gauging how much has elapsed, the problem remains.

Besides the days of having the same 3-5 networks and being forced to consume whatever shit they put out are long gone. I've always found it odd that streaming numbers aren't factored into TV ratings. You can get far more accurate data from streaming than you can get from Nielsen ratings.

Millennials and zoomers are also more attached to the content they watch on YouTube, Twitch and TikTok. ((They)) are mad because online media is very decentralized. Alex Jones was doing better numbers on YouTube than what CNN did pre Trump.

it would be too unflattering for them to compare streaming with broadcast tv
watching tv is more of a passive thing which is why primetime slots were so important, as a popular show would often carry the following few programs due to the audience being too lazy to switch channels or turn it off
streaming is more active and people will turn it off if it's not holding their interest and there is no follow-up program except for maybe the next episode

Because anything gets put on their respective streaming service the next day, which is a godsend for people who know how to torrent properly, or even normies who can choose when to watch instead of rushing home to make sure to catch I show by 9. I remember when I was 22 I pulled over into a cheap motel after I late night at work just so I could catch an episode of the sopranos when it aired. Only thing left is sports, but even Fubo replaces that. I got a subscription because the illegal streaming sites suck, especially when you have people over.
