Romans did use swords though. They shortsword stacked. Pretty kino. Romans never invented spear tech. The greeks invented spears, but it didnt save them from the romans shortsword whirlwind, tesdudo, taco and square shield spam.

      That' moronic
First spears were invented for hunting
Second Rome almost got his ass kick by the greeks of Pyrhus
Third, there's 700 years of Roman empire left to go after they conquered the greeks.

Newer Roman infantry used swords while the older veteran Roman soldiers followed up with spears when the front lines cycled towards the back.

Sounds like you're talking about pre-Marian maniples. The principes and hastati did have spears (pila) which they threw before attacking with their swords. The triarii did fight primarily with spears (with swords as backups) but they were used as a last resort. Post-Marian cohorts fought mainly with swords.

How come they never show Roman soldiers using knives?

I bet they had to cut meat and apples and stuff and didn't want to use their sword for that

Because Romans used the short sword gladius as the main weapon, their "spears" were more like javelins.

With a trusty sling he could have flung Caesar off the Tarpeian rock and his own name into the firmament.

    >their main weapons were spears
    >nuh-uh, their main weapons were swords!
STFU, you're both wrong. Their main weapons were pickaxes. Outmaneuver the enemy, and then cut off their supply lines by building forts at chokepoints, and the rest is inconsequential.

I watched Risen today and there is a cool part in the beginning where some israelite fricks are throwing rocks and shit at Roman soldiers from some high ground, the officer puts dirt on a pilum for grip and throws it into some gay israelites leg, then orders his unit to advance and throw pilums by rank.
it was a cool scene, they form a tetsudo after this and make a ramp up the hill wall, then the Romans who run over the wall see the israelites running away and one Roman drops his shield, draws his sword with fricking legit glee in his eyes and starts chasing them down.

Actually the Romans were the rare warriors of the ancient world who used a sword as their primary weapon. They had two javelins to throw and then engaged with the gladius. Legions did not typically use thrusting spears.
