Hollywood has mostly never seemed to be aware that animation can be used for things other than "goofy family sitcom". I'd go as far as to call Avatar the best adult animation ever created in the US of A and it wasn't even technically for adults, but it respected as trusted its audience with a maturity that too many animations don't.
It's a shame that western animation has to use children's programing as a Trojan horse to tell good stories.
Imagine if these animation visionaries had full creative control and didn't have to restrict themselves to TV14

there should be no such thing as a "kid's show", only shows that kids can also watch and enjoy. if a piece of media can only appeal to children and not to adults then it is worthless.
FPBP. I would add that Hollywood is, since they are just in it for the business, extremely risk averse. That's why they like to pump safe sequels and tropes all the time. If you talk to the Average American, most of them are confused by the concept that a show could be something other than kid's cartoons, although it's more common now to see acceptance of adult sitcoms as well. But trying to explain a show that is an actual drama but happens to be animated just locks them up. You can practically hear the gears in their head grinding against each other trying to move.
This is true, if you are talking about the climax alone, ATLA's wasn't so good. It was everything up to that point that was.
In line with that, there are better endings in Evangelion, Kill la Kill, FLCL, ...

It really wasn't a deal ex machina ending, they just created an unnecessary conundrum for Aang at the end and quickly gave some bullshit solution. Aang has literally killed people earlier in the show so I don't know what the issue was there, but if the wanted to keep Ozai alive they could have just had him hmget KO'd and put restraints on him like Azula.
Shows like avatar are more about the journey than the destination.

AtLA is based tho. Didn't watch for the first time until I was 30. Was glued to my screen for like 4 days straight binging it every second I had free.

I really have a hard time taking people seriously when they think they are above steven universe but enjoyed Avatar
For me, it's Amphibia. This show has more heart and soul than any "adult" tv show in the past 10 years.
