To be fair the directors wanted children in the audience mostly, and they didn’t look at their films through an ironic/sarcastic lens that a lot of westerners look at the Showa stuff

They cared about their films, they were just poorly done. Nowadays young fans like to point at these films in comparison to the American ones and go “SEE?! THIS 165 MILLION DOLLAR MOVIE IS SUPPOSED TO BE JUST LIKE STUPID SLOP”

Heisei was also low budget slop with lackluster beam fights and clumsy attempts at copying whatever Hollywood was doing lately. Not to say they aren't still fun movies, but they really dropped off in quality after Ghidorah.

SpaceGodzilla is like you say, but still good, and I’m actually not a fan of Biollante or 1985, thoughever the rest of the ‘90s movies are the best Godzilla media there is. My favorite continuity is watch the original, skip to Godzilla vs King Ghidorah (1991) and watch from there as one canon.

Until like the late 60s Toho effects films was on part with most Hollywood sci fi movie except for the select few tenpole ones like The War of the Worlds and it was certainly bigger than 99% of movies outside of the biggest studios. And their war movies were even more expensive. Tsuburaya got for Toho (well actually for himself but Toho could use it too) an optical printer that no other studio in the world besides Disney and them had.

Godzilla 1998 nailed, you simply refuse to see it.
    >Serious story about a large creature born from radiation attacks a giant city, and can't be stopped by conventional military thinking
It's literally the same as the best of the Japanese movies, and got Toho's approval for development and production, they never "hated" it the way people want you to think. It's just a good reimagining of Godzilla's core ethos, how radiation could birth a monster that defies all known paradigms. It's a great movie, and anyone who says otherwise, doesn't understand Godzilla.

He can't tank the hits, he has to dodge and weave and sneak around the subways for some hecking epic subversion of a cat and mouse game where the mouse is 200 feet long. No nuclear powers beyond just being big, like the giant animal monsters America was shitting out in the 50s. As much as people bring up Beast from 20,000 Fathoms with this movie, the whole reproduction plot is just the ending of Them without the flamethrowers.

Going by Animated series canon, the flame actually comes from him, and even then it's still is supposed to be a "methan-like" "power-breath attack." I think it's fair to say he actually does have a breath attack, between all that and promo and concept art like this.

idk what you guys are talking about, Godzilla breathes fire in two different scenes in ‘98. Once I think early on against the army guys chasing him, he whirls around and blasts them. Then in the end when the heroes are escaping in the taxi he tries to blast them but he just destroys the block and they take a quick turn or something.

Bro on the box the action figures came in Godzilla had “tornado roar” and “atomic fire” even equipped with a little fireball that snapped into his mouth and if you pressed a spike it fired out. I’m not gonna sit here and let literal redditors gaslight me into believing Godzilla is belching on cars the whole movie and not breathing fire. Go frick yourself.

Both the merch and even cartoon refer to it as a power breath iirc. Jr's was just green and more potent.

              Anonymous

              >idk what you guys are talking about
Basically, in the original script, Godzilla didn't have a traditional breath attack, he would roar and blast wind from his lungs to flip tanks, and it was called his "power breath attack." This didn't test well with audiences, so the two scenes where he breaths fire were late additional reshoots. In that script revision, it's specified that it's a "methane like power breath," and

He doesn't actually create the fire, that's just a belch causing a car to explode.

. But one of the scenes looks like the fire starts in his mouth and it's easy to interpret it like you and I did, in addition to the Animated Series canonizing that interpretation, in addition to promotional art showing such. Hence why the bitter "fans" of 98 say he doesn't have powers, despite the fact that he does.

                Anonymous

As a fan of the toys you’re wrong. Godzilla had a “tornado roar” which was a completely different attack than his “atomic fire.” Godzilla even uses the tornado roar a few times in the movie in separate scenes from when he uses his breath, like when he roars down the alleyway and sends all those taxis and shit flying. Maybe in reshoots or rewrites he didn’t breathe fire for some reason but in the final version he definitely did. It would be stupid if he didn’t.
Plus the cartoon. And IMO the cartoon Godzilla has the coolest blast charge up. Instead of all the spikes glowing at once his tail starts glowing in one spot and it shoots up his back until his eyes glow then the blast comes out and it makes a rad sound effect.

Honestly if they had said that this is a remake of beast from 20000 fathoms, I would not mind it as much. The beast from that movie was not an invulnerable, fire breathing icon of cinema, so Zilla would have been a better representation of it.

But Godzilla was basically a Japanese remake of Beast from 20,000 fathoms, the two have a lot in common.
And I think Godzilla being the iconic name it is is worthy of bearing the title to a remake of those similarities.

          Anonymous

Well, Godzilla may have been somewhat inspired by Beast, but the smiliarities are surface level. It's like saying that other alien invasion stories copied war of the worlds. Of course they did. It was a genre pioneering book.
The two have the "pre-historic monster awoken by a nuke" thing in common but Gojira added an entire emotional and thematic subplot about Serizawa and his weapon, and treated the monster attack and the nuclear element very seriously. I almost feel like Beast was also supposed to be radioactive, but censors changed the cause of troops collapsing from it's blood, to a disease being unleashed.

I wouldn't go that far, but I do think it's very overhated. It doesn't feel like a typical Toho Godzilla movie at all, it's more of a 90s Hollywood take on 50s giant monster movies like The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms and Godzilla 1954. It's enjoyable if you watch it as more of its own thing, which it really is. This isn't "Godzilla", it's "American Godzilla."

Because all of Godzilla's charm comes from how he's a guy in a suit and Hollywood refuses to make these films that way, probably because they think it's cheesy. But somehow making actors wear leotards with tennis balls on them for motion capture is fine.

It's because realism in special effects and animation is the only thing that matters to the American normie audience. A CGI model with detailed skin and musculature is more acceptable then a rubber suit, an animatronic, or a puppet to the flock of sheep, no matter how much they want to use "Practical effects" as a marketing gimmick for the genre film enthusiasts.

She's barely in the new movie but because of her Godzilla gets his one and only character moment when they're both getting kinda sweet for each other for a moment and Junkie nearly murders the moment with his music.

Honestly this is kind of a shitty excuse. The whole movie kept amping up over and over to the point where the pacing destroyed any amount of tension

They could’ve easily just let her use hurricane winds, beams and stuff without ruining her iconic look. The larvae was an even greater offender. Looks like absolute dog shit

Mothra was there originally but changed out for Fosphera to be cheaper but audiences hated it so they brought mothra back. Fosphera was just a cheap knockoff off mothra anyway.

It's possible that Mothra was there from the beginning and Fosphera was just a placeholder to keep her a secret but we don't know. They clearly animated a scene of her and Godzilla having a gentle scene together but it's only one thing so maybe they could've managed to animate it.
It's also unknown if the movie started as a Kong solo movie because Godzilla is sidelined hard but interviews point towards Wingard just not giving a shit about Godzilla.

They always say this but then you look up interviews with Wingard and he's always gushing about liking Godzilla as a kid and he's been hanging with Yamazaki. He seems pretty passionate about Godzilla, versus the attitude's of the directors of 98 and 2014 who clearly didn't like the series very much.

It never goes beyond him saying this shit and in the movies Godzilla is like an unwanted child. He said he considers Kong the only main character and that he didn't give Godzilla a story. His interviews with Empire, Gizmodo and to lesser degree Hollywood Reporter show that he's not going to change his approach. He doesn't give Godzilla anything. He's the one who keeps wasting this character. I don't give a crap that he liked Godzilla vs. Hedorah if in the movie Godzilla is in the background not doing anything important.

                >in the movies Godzilla is like an unwanted child
Except the main plot of Godzilla vs Kong is about Godzilla trying to fight Mechagodzilla, and the Stranger Things girl investigating Mechagodzilla.
Having King Kong in the movie didn't mean Godzilla was "neglected." The only time Godzilla was being ignored was in the first Monsterverse movie, but everyone admits they fricked up with that.

Kong had the story in GVK. This was the exact same thing as in the new movie. Kong is the emotional center, Godzilla is the muscle. While he didn't have a lot of screentime for most of the 2014 movie he was still central to the plot. They didn't have everything figured out back then but the central idea was that some people believed that Godzilla was a benevolent creature and at the end they were proven right.
KotM was the first to fully use Godzilla as a monster-protagonist. Something that Wingard says can't be done.

He said Kong is the main character of the entire franchise, how you can empathize with him unlike Godzilla and just generally kept talking about his approach to the monsters and how much he was able to do with Kong.
He gives nothing to Godzilla. He doesn't give a shit beyond like a token action scene here and there. He invented a new problem that Dougherty didn't have. Dougherty let Godzilla be a character with a story. Wingard said he can't do it. He's shit. If he directs another one Godzilla will be a background character. How many moments does Godzilla have in the new movie? Like 2-3. How many meaningful actions important to the plot? Fricking one.

                >how you can empathize with him unlike Godzilla
He's right, because Toho mandated that Legendary can't humanize Godzilla.
Wingard so far has been the only Monsterverse director to actually try to slip in some personality from Godzilla instead of making him an emotionless monster.

                Anonymous

Bullshit. None of the Toho mandates were real. They're all urban legends. In the interview with Hollywood Reporter Wingard said that Toho gave them a lot of creative freedom and only sometimes stepping in to say that something was out of character for Godzilla. Clearly Godzilla can emote and express complex feelings. And he can have an arc. MV proves it can be done but the difference is that Wingard either doesn't give a shit enough to do it or doesn't know how because he sucks so much.

He was loosely connected with the Peter Jackson film, and almost directed something related to that production hell. He mentioned in a way where it's clearly something he thinks about, which is probably why he feels so biased to Kong.

I think he used to prefer Godzilla but then he made this new Kong basically from scratch and it's "his" monster. I think he only likes to talk about his memories regarding Toho Godzilla but has no heart for Legendary version because he can't project some kind of Conan the Barbarian/Kratos/80s action star shit on him. He's wasting this character. He's wasting him.

In those movies the Earth is a scorched waste so Godzilla is just standing in the middle of thousands of miles of craters and canyons and foliage made of razor blades. I liked it, but a few years later I wish it either wasn't Godzilla or they got rid of the first few forms and made it so that he starts the movie in his third form. Part of the appeal to me was that it looked like a scarred, burned creature, having it just morph into that bothered me.

there's something magic about godzilla movies and toku when you're a kid and you don't consider the idea of them being silly or fake or how they're made, you just take it as is.
I put Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla 1974 for my nephew when he was like 5 or 6 and I was babysitting him, and seeing him get so hyped up for the movie, especially the last fight, was awesome to see.
He got really into godzilla after that but at one point his dad told him the old effects were corny and for a while he had a hard time saying he liked them and would basically repeat what his dad said about them. But now he's 10 and he's hyped up to see more Japanese Godzilla movies again because he thinks they're cooler.
But tl;dr, no one should ever rob a kid of the magic of tokusatsu by deriding it.

I agree, it's interesting to see what makes us stick to the things we believe and observe for ourselves, and what people tell us. I got told plenty of things like that growing up, but I decided they were all wrong and that I was right, and that they hold up well and are compelling pieces of art. It will be interesting to see if your Nephew observes for himself, or accepts what he's told.

Not only are they not representative of kamen rider they also have terrible stories. Sure they're more violent but for supposed R rated shows they have worse writing than kids shows. If you're looking for something less episodic, try the heisei era. Kuuga is the first and worth starting. I'd still stick with the showa era series but it doesn't hurt to switch it up.

Suitmation has pretty much left the mainstream in Japanese cinema. But they always had small budgets to work with.
    >Gamera 3, one of the best looking suitmation monster movies, cost 7 mil yo make
    >Shin Godzilla was 10 million, and Godzilla shots are like 6 minutes of the total screen time
    >Minus One was 15 million and they had to spend money on the period piece aesthetics too
So just as a theory. If Japan had 250 million (hollywood blockbuster budget) dollars to do a suitmation movie, would it look presentable?

American movies have no reverence for Godzilla or what he can represent, he's essentially just an action figure that western filmmakers get handed and bang into stuff
It's why Godzilla Minus One mogs every recent appearance of Godzilla, in these movies he's nothing but a big lizard who acts as King Kong's sidekick instead of an embodiment of the fear and despair of the nuclear age

      Anonymous

The sad thing is even as a crazy action figure movie, he could be great still. Pacific rim was beautifully done for example

But none of the writers since 14 care about weight, scale, the humans, colour, or anything of the sort.

People shit on pacific rim 2, but I’d honestly compare it to king of the monsters in terms of directing. They’re both really fricking bad

      Anonymous

Even the 2014 Godzilla dropped the ball. The trailers made it seem like it was almost gonna be the American answer to 1954. But then they made Godzilla into that true neutral, "I'm just here to save you guys from an even worse threat" monster. I always felt that the "savior of the city" thing in the end of 2014, wasn't earned. If they had no context of Godzilla being heroic (like the viewers do), then Godzilla waking up after a battle, would be like a lion waking up at a pre-school, after killing two leopards who were terrorizing the kids. Yeah, the two predators are dead, but it's a leap of logic to declare the sleepy lion as a hero and savior of the kids.

As a life long Godzilla fan, I was happy with KOTM. Call it fanservice or not, but King Ghidorah was a great villain, Rodan and Mothra had their moments, and they used the classic (but slightly updated) songs from the old films. It was basically a Ghidorah the three headed monster remake, and no less outlandish than that film was.

Godzilla vs Kong felt like King of the Monsters 2 but with less rain and smoke covering up the action and slightly better writing. If you liked KoTM there's no reason you wouldn't have liked GvK.

Not exactly. KOTM ended on an ominous note, with more and more titans awakening, and Godzilla taking charge as the king of the monsters, with humanity in a pretty uncertain position by then. And then GVK starts by saying that all the monsters beat each other off screen, and that only Godzilla and the big ape remain. All thay Hollow earth stuff was meh, and the only good idea it had (bringing Ghidorah back as Mechagodzilla) was underused as hell.

NTA but I'm a big Goji fan (not as much as that first anon though, very based) and I enjoyed King of the Monsters. I agree the dialogue sucks a lot of the time, and I'm still sad we're in an era of permanent CGzilla outside the yearly shorts, but I thought it was a fun movie overall and it was the first time that an America movie actually "felt" like Godzilla. It was a comfy popcorn flick, made me think about watching the Heisei movies for the first time when I was a kid.

I may be a weird one that liked 2014, HATED KotM, and loved GvK. I loved any scenes with King Ghidorah and Rodan, but they both went out too easily. Burning Godzilla was cool but I was hoping for a round 2 and instead it was one-sided. The entire story around the eco terrorists and the family was awful imo, so bad in execution. I was hoping all the main characters got take out so we'd never have to see them again. Sadly the dad and girl came back in GvK, but they were so little involved I forgot about them entirely. The GvK movie was a messy story but I liked how it worked out. I also liked all the new characters, which they kepy the story focused on. All the fights in GvK were great, and I loved all the monster scenes in general.

How do you make Godzilla an interesting character?

      Anonymous

All versions are interesting. But this one? He's an ancient creature that's a survivor of wars and cataclysmic events who silently protects the world at the expense of his own health until he becomes a literal king and tries to somehow keep this shit afloat protecting humans from monsters and monsters from humans without anything tipping the scale too much. He's a creature with the heaviest burden on his shoulders with a past bond with ancient humans that both species may remember (or they would if he was given a story after KotM).
There's a natural pathos and sadness in him. His loneliness (besides Mothra her inclusion also makes him interesting because you know he's more complex than he seems). It's such a unique take on the character. I want to knw how he handless all these monsters on the surface. I stopped caring for cookie cutter Kong with an axe resting on his shoulder with a kid like fricking Kratos. It's horribly pedestrian.

Even if this movie does well, I doubt Wingard will be back for the next one only because it feels like getting Wingard on GXK was a production schedules being all fricked with Covid and thus it was easier to just bring him back than to start from scratch for the next movie. WB needed more midrange hits and GvK did well enough to fasttrack a sequel. same reason they ran with Gunn for the new DC universe, he had recently worked witht hem and had decent critical success.

He said he wants another. He's probably the most likely candidate. And if he already has a story, before any feedback, then it's another Kong story. But I don't know what can it be. Even if he said "I want to put Godzilla more in the focus" I won't believe him. First of all he would never say it because he firmly stated that he sees Godzilla in limited capacity only.

Lot of fights, good horror-ish tone, nice cinematography, and it's an interesting re-imagining of Godzilla. One of the only monster fight movies where Godzilla is the bad guy.

works as a sequel to 1954 while having its own identity. the mystical elements and the very literal metaphor of it make it unique. I know they originally wanted to use different monsters but Mothra and Ghidorah were weird in the context and the ending battle wasn't that great. especially compared to his Gamera movies.
I'd still put it towards the top of my godzilla list though

The last fights in those really are great. Super hard to top.

Half century war is among the best Godzilla stories in any medium.

      Rulers of Earth is good.

      Kingdom of Monsters is weak.

Legends is mixed. The MechaG vs Hedorah issue was good & the Titanosaurus issue was very good.

Pic related old Dark Horse stuff is good but mixed. Some great art at times.

Terror of Mechagodzilla has robot boobs. Not only is the character a robot, but the boobs are a prop.
